6 arrested for ‘film-inspired' heist in retd doctor's home

Kendrapada: Police in Kendrapada district arrested six individuals, including a 20-year-old engineering student, on Wednesday for posing as vigilance officers and looting the home of a retired physician, reminiscent of the Hindi film 'Special 26'.
Police said that on July 10, the gang, inspired by the 1987 Opera House heist in Mumbai depicted in the Akshay Kumar-starrer, executed their meticulous plan at the residence of Jalil Ahmad Khan, 80, a retired doctor, in Oldhi village. The accused entered Khan's home under the guise of vigilance officers. Once inside, they confiscated the family's mobile phones and confined them to a corner while they ransacked the house.
The imposters decamped with around 500 grams of gold ornaments valued at Rs 50 lakh and Rs 1.5 lakh in cash.
The accused have been identified as Saraf Ali, 35, and Prafulla Behera, 43, both from Oldhi, Abhilas Nayak, 20, an engineering student from Poila village, Jakir Khan, 41, from Thakurapatana village, Abu Jafar Khan, 30, from Garapur, and Sk Raju from Ranapada village. Police recovered Rs 50,000, four mobile phones, two motorcycles, and several incriminating documents from the accused.
Two more suspects remain at large, and investigations are ongoing.
The breakthrough came after a dedicated police team analysed call detail records and CCTV footage, leading to the identification and arrest of the accused. "Their plan, inspired by a film, crumbled due to our methodical approach," said Ambika Prasad Das, IIC of Derabishi police station.
The accused have been charged under sections 310 (dacoity) and 333 (house trespass) of the BNS. They were produced in court on Wednesday, which rejected their bail applications and remanded them in judicial custody.
Khan said, "We are happy that the police arrested the criminals. Cops have assured us that they will recover all the looted items soon."

As rural Gujarat gets scammed in the name of welfare, why BJP is silent

The tribal soil of central-eastern Gujarat has of late been quite rich with embarrassment—and worse. Judge only by the expenditure domains that are seeing corruption inquiries: the execution of flagship social sector schemes, the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) in Dahod, Bharuch and Vadodara districts, and the Nal Se Jal scheme in Mahisagar misappropriation of funds, now being investigated, is said to have lightened the state exchequer by Rs 204 crore. The scams—Rs 71 crore in Dahod, Rs 7.3 crore in Bharuch and Rs 2.7 crore in Vadodara—reveal a near-identical pattern. Fictitious or incomplete infrastructure projects were passed off as complete for construction contractors to claim the money. PHANTOM INFRA Between January 2021 and December 31, 2024, infrastructure projects like roads, check walls and stone bunds had a phantom-like quality about them in Dahod—they existed only on paper. As befits the best fiction, a bit of fact was sometimes mixed in, as audits revealed. In Kuva village in Dahod, for instance, only 15,176 metres of the claimed 25,066 metres of roads were constructed; in Simamoi village, just 3,492 metres of 19,200 metres were built. Yet, full payments were money was funnelled to some 32 unauthorised firms, including Shri Raj Construction Co. and Shri Raj Traders, which alone received Rs 30.04 crore and Rs 82 lakh, respectively, without entering the mandatory bidding processes. In Bharuch and Vadodara, construction agencies similarly defrauded the government through forged bills and manipulated tenders, with payments cleared for materials never supplied, or work left scam in Dahod surfaced in January when local villagers complained to district authorities. An FIR was filed in April after audits by the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) confirmed inaccuracies. The scandal hit local media when two sons of minister Bachubhai Khabad (MoS, panchayat and agriculture) were among the 11 people arrested. Balwant and Kiran were later released on bail. The BJP said the arrests were a sign of its commitment to punish wrongdoers even if they were associated with a minister, but the political damage is likely to run Congress legislative party leader, Amit Chavda, was at the forefront in exposing the scam and demanding action. But in Bharuch, Congress vice-president and district leader Hira Jotva and son Digvijay were arrested on accusations of inflating material costs through their Nal Se Jal scheme saw Rs 123.44 crore purloined from funds allocated for drinking water infra like pipelines, wells and tubewells in 620 villages between January 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023. The playbook was the same: forged bills, bogus documents, inflated costs, bypassed tender protocols, contracts to unauthorised agencies. It was a unit manager of the Water and Sanitation Management Organisation in Mahisagar who filed an FIR in June. Tribals influence another 13 seats—a key factor, then, in 40 of 182 assembly seats. The BJP won nine of these in 2017 and 23 in 2022. The Congress's tally shrunk from 15 in 2017 to three in 2022. Dahod typifies this: its seven MLAs are all Chavda alleges, the scam covers at least two more talukas and accounts for over Rs 100 crore, but is being suppressed to save Khabad, a prominent OBC Koli leader and four-time MLA. The BJP's stoic silence has only fuelled those allegations. Sri Ram Sene leader held for poisoning school water tank to target Muslim headmaster in Karnataka
BELAGAVI: In a shocking incident, police have confirmed that a Sri Ram Sene leader deliberately poisoned the drinking water tank of a government school in Hulikatti, Saundatti taluk, leading to 12 students falling ill. The attack, police said, was motivated by religious bias aimed at the school's headmaster, who is a Muslim. Including Sri Ram Sene leader Sagar Patil, the main accused, all three persons involved in the plot have been arrested. The incident occurred a couple of weeks ago at the Government Higher Primary School in Hulikatti, which has 41 enrolled students. Headmaster Suleman Gorinayak, who has been serving at the school for 13 years, was allegedly the target of the conspiracy. Addressing a press conference, Superintendent of Police Dr Bhimashankar Guled said, 'Sagar Patil of Hulikatti village conspired to have the headmaster removed purely because of his religion (Muslim). To execute this plan, he coerced another villager, Krishna Madar, by threatening to expose his inter-caste relationship unless he cooperated.' Under duress, Krishna, along with his associate Naganagouda Patil, allegedly procured pesticide from Munavalli town. They mixed it into a soft drink bottle and bribed a minor student from the school with Rs 500, snacks, and chocolates to pour the contents into the school's water tank. The student carried out the act as instructed. On July 14, soon after consuming the contaminated water, 12 students fell ill and 11of them were hospitalised and treated promptly. All have since recovered. SP Guled confirmed that the accused, Sagar Patil, Krishna Madar, and Naganagouda Patil have been arrested. A case has been registered at Saundatti Police Station, and further investigation is on.
