Pune district election officer orders recount of votes in Hadapsar assembly seat

News1821-07-2025
Pune, Jul 21 (PTI) The Pune district election officer has ordered a recount of votes polled in the Hadapsar assembly constituency in the November 2024 Maharashtra elections, months after one of the losing candidates alleged irregularities in the counting process.
The recounting of votes will take place at Bhosari from July 25 to August 2, said the district election officer in a release on Monday without providing further details.
In November 2024, Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) candidate from Hadapsar in Pune district, Prashant Jagtap, had demanded a recount of votes in electronic voting machines and voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) paper slips in the constituency after raising objections over the counting process and alleging manipulation of EVMs.
In Hadapsar, the main contest was between the rival factions of the NCP and Jagtap narrowly lost the election by 7,122 votes.
Chetan Tupe of the ruling NCP was declared elected from the seat with 1,34,810 votes, while rival NCP (SP)'s Jagtap received 1,27,688 votes.
Objections were raised by losing candidates in several assembly constituencies in the state over the counting process after the assembly elections and Hadapsar was one of them.
The Election Commission granted permission for a recount of 27 EVMs and VVPAT machines from the Hadapsar assembly constituency. However, the instructions given for this recount were to erase the actual voting data from the machines and conduct a mock poll for the recount.
Jagtap, along with others, challenged this decision of the EC in the Supreme Court.
The Pune district collector, who acted as election officer during the polls, has now ordered a recount of votes in Hadapsar.
Meanwhile, Jagtap expressed confidence the 'vote tampering" that occurred in the Hadapsar constituency eight months ago will be exposed after recounting. PTI COR SPK RSY

Trump, Putin will meet at Alaska military base long used to counter Russia

Washington, Aug 13 (AP) In an ironic twist, President Donald Trump is set to discuss the war in Ukraine with Russian leader Vladimir Putin at a military base in Alaska that was crucial to countering the Soviet Union during the height of Cold War and still plays a role today. The meeting is scheduled to take place Friday at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, according to a White House official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal planning. The base created by merging Elmendorf Air Force Base and Army Fort Richardson in 2010 has played a key strategic role in monitoring and deterring the Soviet Union during much of the Cold War. Throughout its long history, the base hosted large numbers of aircraft and oversaw operations of a variety of early warning radar sites that were aimed at detecting Soviet military activity and any possible nuclear launches. It earned the motto 'Top Cover for North America" at this time, according to the base website. While much of the military hardware has since been deactivated, the base still hosts key aircraft squadrons, including the F-22 Raptor stealth fighter jet. Planes from the base also still intercept Russian aircraft that regularly fly into US airspace. The irony of Putin visiting an American military base that long has — and still does — aimed to counter Russian threats comes as Trump works to reach a ceasefire deal in a war that he promised during the 2024 campaign to end quickly. Officials from Ukraine and Europe fear that the one-on-one meeting they will not take part in could lead to an outcome that favours Russian goals. French President Emmanuel Macron said Trump was 'very clear" that the United States wants to achieve a ceasefire at the summit. Macron spoke after a virtual meeting between Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other European leaders. Trump has said any major agreement could involve land swaps and that Zelenskyy and Putin could meet next or he could meet with both leaders. 'There's a very good chance that we're going to have a second meeting, which will be more productive than the first, because the first is I'm going to find out where we are and what we're doing," Trump told reporters Wednesday. 'It's going to be a very important meeting, but it's setting the table for the second meeting." (AP) GSP view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Uttarakhand Cabinet approves amendments to anti-conversion law

Dehradun, Aug 13 (PTI) The Uttarakhand Cabinet on Wednesday approved amendments to the anti-conversion law to make it harsher, with stringent provisions like punishment up to life imprisonment and heavy fines being added to the new bill. The Uttarakhand Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Bill-2025 was approved in the state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, official sources said. According to the bill, apart from strict punishment for illegal religious conversion, provisions such as ban on propaganda through digital medium and protection of victims have been added, they said. The definition of inducement has been expanded in the bill to include gifts, cash/goods benefits, employment, free education, promise of marriage, hurting religious faith or glorifying another religion, categorising all of them as crime. It makes punishable the acts like promoting or inciting conversion through social media, messaging app or any online medium. There is a provision in the bill for three to 10 years imprisonment for general violation, five to 14 years in cases related to sensitive class and 20 years to life imprisonment in serious cases and heavy fines. The proposed bill also makes a provision for strict punishment for marriage by creating fake identity or hiding religion besides making a provision for protection, rehabilitation, medical, travel and maintenance expenses of the victims of illegal conversions. According to the state government, the proposed legislation will protect the religious rights of the citizens, prohibit conversion by fraud, inducement or pressure and maintain social harmony, the sources said.
