Sharp rise in home burglary reports 'a big worry'
The force, which covers Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and Powys, reported a 27% increase in the year to December 2024.
Car mechanic Dafydd Jones, 27, who recently had thousands of pounds worth of tools stolen from his shed in Ceredigion, said the rise in crime was a "big worry".
Dyfed-Powys Police said its transition to a new crime reporting system was partly behind the rise for 2024, adding the actual increase was 26%.
The force said its officers were committed to attending and investigating residential burglaries.

The ONS data indicated a 7% decrease in reports of residential burglaries across Wales and England as a whole.
Mr Jones found £3,000-£4,000 worth of tools stolen from his farm shed in Ffair Rhos, Ceredigion, when he came home from work on 12 May.
He said many of the tools stolen were ones he needed for his work as a mechanic, while others had personal value such as tools that were inherited with his farm and others which he bought as an apprentice car technician.
Mr Jones, who reported the incident to the police, said it had had a massive impact on his daily life.
"I'll never forget about this and I'll always be thinking about it," he said.
"Even when I go out to the shops, or to check on the sheep, I'll be thinking 'could someone be robbing the shed?'
"It's just not nice when you've worked so hard for your money and to buy everything you need."
Mr Jones said a rise in rural crime and burglaries had become a big worry for people in his local area.
"There's a lot of rural crime going on at the moment, with quadbikes and farming tools being taken.
"Other people that I've spoken to are scared of their stuff being taken as well."
Mr Jones said he understood it was difficult for the police to monitor everything, especially in rural areas, but felt the issue was not being taken seriously enough.
"There should be more of a hunger to find the people responsible."
In the Dyfed-Powys Police force area, ONS figures showed Powys had seen the highest increase in residential burglaries in Wales, with an 81% spike in the year to December 2024.
In Ceredigion, the ONS data showed a 60% increase in residential burglaries in the same period while Carmarthenshire saw a 50% rise.
A spokesperson for Dyfed-Powys Police said: "While it is difficult to comment on the exact reason for the increase in reports of burglaries, we are aware of national reporting issues due to our transition to a new crime system in 2023 which led to the figures being more than they should be in 2024.
"Measures have been taken to correct the figures however this may not be reflected in the published ONS data."
In amended figures provided by Dyfed-Powys Police, the force reported a 26% rise in residential burglaries in its area, meaning it still had the highest percentage increase in residential burglaries in Wales and England over the period.
Powys saw a rise of 55% in the amended figures, Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire reported a 27% and 26% increase respectively while Pembrokeshire – also in the force area – saw a smaller increase of 1%.
The force said it "acknowledged the significant impact that crimes of this nature have on victims and the worry it can cause to the wider community".
It said police forces across Wales and England had implemented a new policy in 2023 to ensure police attend every reported residential dwelling burglary.
It said its officers were committed to attending and investigating burglaries and urged the public to continue reporting them.
The charity Crimestoppers recommends taking the following steps to protect your property from burglars.
Fit burglar alarms with flashing lights and sounders at the front and back
Switch lights or a radio on when you go out
Check that all doors and windows are properly closed and locked
Make sure side and back gates are secure
Don't leave garden tools outside, keep ladders out of sight and ensure sheds, garages and outbuildings are locked
Fit tamper-proof automatic outside security lights
Even when you're at home, try not to leave accessible windows open at night

$20K reward offered to find driver that killed toddler and father in Long Beach
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors increased the reward to find the hit-and-run driver who allegedly killed a 3-year-old and her father in 2022. The deadly crash happened in North Long Beach on the night of March 1, 2022. Samantha Palacios, 3, and her father, Jose Palacios-Gonzalez, 42, were asleep in their apartment on the 6600 block of Rose Avenue when suspect Octavio Montano Islas slammed his 2014 Dodge Ram pickup truck through their wall. The Long Beach Police Department said Montano Islas was drunk and driving away from a nearby bar. Initially, LA County offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the apprehension and conviction of Montano Islas. Supervisor Janice Hahn increased the reward to $20,000 after it expired this year. "Today Samantha would have been seven years old, possibly starting 2nd grade in a few weeks, had Octavio Montano Islas not brutally cut her life short. Nothing will fill the gap left by the deaths of Samantha and her dad Jose, but we need to find this driver and hold him accountable. Their families deserve justice," Hahn said. Following the deadly collision, family members and supporters pleaded for justice and implored Montano Islas to turn himself in to the police. "Nothing is going to return our loved ones, but Octavio Montano Islas has to pay for what he did," said mother Esnelia Palacios in 2023. "I ask you to please help us do justice." Investigators described Islas as a 5-foot-8, 160-pound man with black hair and tattoos on his right forearm. Authorities urged anyone with information to contact Scott Jenson of the Long Beach Police Department Detective Division at (562) 570-7218. "To the suspect that took the lives of Jose and Samantha, know this: our officers will not be dissuaded by the passage of time," Long Beach Police Chief Wally Hebeish said in 2023. Wiltshire PCC: ‘CCTV helps us make our streets safer for all'
CCTV is being hailed as a key tool in tackling crime and supporting community safety. Wiltshire and Swindon Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Philip Wilkinson has reinforced the vital role of surveillance across the county, especially amid rising incidents in Swindon and other areas. Swindon's Central area has recorded more than 1,000 incidents this year, with increases also seen in Old Town, Mannington and Western, Walcot and Parks North. Mr Wilkinson said: "Everyone deserves to feel safe where they live, work and visit. "CCTV is one of the most effective tools we have to support that goal." Swindon Borough Council operates 1,100 cameras from its control centre, with operators monitoring public spaces in real time to help police respond quickly to incidents and gather crucial evidence to support investigations. The footage has helped identify suspects, protect vulnerable people and sometimes prevent crimes from escalating. New cameras are being installed in Trowbridge at anti-social behaviour hot spots such as the Town Park sports courts and Biss Meadows Country Park. Earlier this week, Mr Wilkinson visited the CCTV suite in Warminster, which uses 49 cameras to monitor the town, neighbouring Westbury, and the West Wilts Trading Estate. Mr Wilkinson said: "I was hugely impressed with the setup in Warminster and how closely they work with their local neighbourhood policing team to provide intelligence and evidence which has been used to secure significant convictions in the town." He emphasised that CCTV is just one part of a wider approach. Mr Wilkinson said: "CCTV doesn't work in isolation, it's part of a broader strategy that includes neighbourhood policing, community engagement and strong local partnerships. "Together, these efforts help create environments where people feel secure and supported. "Our investment in CCTV is an investment in making streets safer. "It's about giving our communities peace of mind and ensuring our officers have the resources they need to keep people safe." Philip Wilkinson OBE was re-elected as Wiltshire's Police and Crime Commissioner in May 2024 for a second term. As PCC, he is responsible for overseeing the work of Wiltshire Police, ensuring the running of an efficient and effective police service, holding the chief constable to account on behalf of the county's residents, as well as commissioning key services that help make the county's communities safer and support victims.
