Terror suspect held in Andhra Pradesh an expert at making explosives, says T.N. DGP Shankar Jiwal

The Hindu11-07-2025
Abubacker Siddique, one of the most wanted terror suspects nabbed by the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of the Tamil Nadu Police in Andhra Pradesh recently, was an expert at making Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), Director-General of Police (DGP) Shankar Jiwal has said.
Talking to reporters in Chennai on Friday, ATS officials shared the inputs given by Siddique to the Andhra Pradesh Police and Central agencies. A search was conducted at the hideout of Siddique in Rayachoti near Kadapa, where explosives and other incriminating materials were seized.
Mr. Jiwal said the ATS launched two operations — Operation Aram and Operation Agazhi — in which Siddique, Mohammed Ali, and 'Tailor' Raja were arrested. Siddique was wanted in several bomb blast and communal murder cases.
He was on the run for about 30 years, but continued his criminal activities across south India. There were hardly any clues, and he was operating under several pseudonyms, changing his location constantly.
The DGP said the suspects posed as real estate agents or textile merchants and were capable of doing a variety of jobs.
The ATS team, which relied on human and technical intelligence, followed specific clues and picked up 'Tailor' Raja on July 9 in Vijayapura in Karnataka. He was wanted in four sensitive cases, including the 1998 Coimbatore serial bomb blasts case. He has been on the run since 1996, and there were no photographs of him except of a few from his teenage years. Raja was not in touch with his family and friends all these years.
The success of the ATS in apprehending the most wanted terror suspects involved several months of hard work, Mr. Jiwal said.

Encounter in Chhattisgarh: Security forces foil Maoists' ambush in Bastar; arms seized

RAIPUR: A late-night gun battle broke out between Maoists and security forces in Kondagaon district in Bastar division on Friday with an exchange of fire lasting for several minutes that left a villager injured. The condition of the village was stated to be stable and he was receiving treatment at a hospital. Security forces have recovered country-made weapons, Maoist uniforms and literature from the site of the encounter. According to Kondagaon SP Y Akshay Kumar, the encounter took place at Kohkameta village forest in Keshkal. There were specific inputs about the presence of Maoists in the Kanhargaon area and acting on the input, SP directed a joint anti-Maoist operation involving security personnel from Bastar Fighters, District Reserve Guard, and CRPF. Around late night, the security forces came under heavy fire from 10–12 armed Maoists who had laid an ambush. The insurgents, equipped with sophisticated automatic weapons, opened indiscriminate fire with the intent to loot weapons and inflict casualties on the security personnel, said officials. The joint team retaliated, leading to Maoists retreating into forests taking cover of dense trees and darkness. Police said that a villager who was in the nearby region inadvertently came under cross- firing and suffered a bullet injury. He was evacuated and rushed to a local hospital and later referred to Kondagaon district hospital. During a subsequent search of the encounter site, forces recovered two country-made firearms, Maoist uniforms, propaganda literature, bags and medicines. These items, officials said, indicate that the Maoists had been camping in the area and were preparing for an attack. SP Kumar said security forces have intensified the search operation in the forests of Kohkameta and Nalajhar. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Raja Raghuvanshi murder case: Rajasthan man impersonating RPF inspector held at slain businessman's Indore home

INDORE: A Rajasthan man was arrested Thursday night after impersonating an RPF police inspector at the home of a recently murdered transport businessman, Raja Raghuvanshi, in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Bajrang Lal Jat, a resident of Ratangarh, Rajasthan, arrived at the residence of Raja Raghuvanshi, who was recently killed in Meghalaya. Wearing a khaki uniform with three stars on his shoulder, the impostor questioned Raja's father before introducing himself to the family as Raja's friend. Raja's mother, Uma Raghuvanshi, alerted her sons, Vipin and Sachin, over the phone. When the brothers arrived home, they grew suspicious of the man's nervous behaviour and demanded identification documents, which he failed to produce. The accused claimed to be a railway police officer posted in Delhi, earlier in Ujjain, and told the family he came to "share the grief" of Raja's death. However, Vipin challenged his story, questioning how he could have met Raja at Mahakal temple in 2021 during the COVID lockdown when Raja wasn't travelling. Bajrang began evading questions when pressed for an ID card. His suspicious arguments with Vipin prompted the family to contact Rajendra Nagar police, who registered an FIR based on Vipin's complaint. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Citadel by Mahindra – Homes with a Modern Edge Mahindra Citadel Enquire Now Undo Additional CP Rajesh Dandotiya told reporters that Bajrang Lal was a terminated RPF constable. ICC bans Saman from all forms of cricket for 5 yrs

Former Sri Lankan domestic cricketer Saliya Saman has been banned from all cricket for five years after an ICC Anti-Corruption Tribunal found him guilty of breaching the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) Anti-Corruption Code. Saman was among eight people charged in September 2023 for breaching the Code. The ban is backdated to 13 September 2023, when Saman was provisionally suspended and hence he has already served two years of his sentence. The 39-year-old Saman played 101 first-class and 77 List A games. The charges relate to the 2021 Abu Dhabi T10 Cricket League and attempts to corrupt matches in that tournament which were disrupted by the ICC, the Designated Anti-Corruption Official (DACO) for the purposes of the ECB's Code for the tournament. Saman has been charged on three counts 2.1.1, 2.1.3 and 2.1.4. Article 2.1.1 states: 'Being party to an attempt to fix, contrive or influence improperly matches or aspects of matches in the Abu Dhabi T10 2021.' As per Article 2.1.3, Saman offered 'a Reward to another Participant in exchange for that player engaging in Corrupt Conduct under the Code.' Article 2.1.4 states: 'Directly or indirectly soliciting, inducing, enticing, instructing, persuading, encouraging or intentionally facilitating any Participant to breach Code Article 2.1'.
