Despite brief military conflict, India-Pak trade persisted in May

Mint4 hours ago
Islamabad, Jul 5 (PTI) Despite a brief military conflict and the continued closure of borders, trade between Pakistan and India persisted in May, primarily through a third country.
The official data showed that imports from India reached a three-year high during July-May FY25, Dawn reported quoting the data of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).
It showed that imports from India totalled USD 211.5 million in the first 11 months of FY25 — surpassing USD 207m in FY24 and USD 190m in FY23.
In May alone — when the four-day conflict broke out in the first week—imports stood at USD 15 million, slightly down from USD 17 million in the same month last year.
However, Pakistan's exports to India remained negligible.
In May, exports to India were recorded at just USD 1,000, while total exports during July-May FY25 were only USD 0.5 million.
In FY24 and FY23, exports stood at USD 3.44 million and USD 0.33 million, respectively—highlighting the highly one-sided nature of bilateral trade.
Formal trade relations between Pakistan and India have suffered since 2019. However, after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives, India took a series of measures, including immediate shutting down of the Attari land-transit post, used for movement of certain kinds of goods.
In retaliation, Pakistan too announced that 'all trade with India, including to and from any third country through Pakistan, is suspended forthwith.'
Traders were reluctant to discuss the continuation of imports during the tense period. However, one trader suggested: 'It may have come from a third country and the payment for the May imports would have been made before the war.'
Although official data reflects limited trade, some research institutions claim the actual trade is far higher. 'India's unofficial exports to Pakistan are estimated at USD 10 billion annually, routed primarily through Dubai, Colombo, and Singapore,' Dawn said quoting a research body.
Analysts said the unofficial trade remains robust due to Pakistan's high cost of production and industrial dependence on foreign inputs. 'We should not ignore smuggling from India since the cost of production in Pakistan is the highest in the region, which creates space for goods from India, China, and Bangladesh,' said an exporter.

‘Hit below… Don't shoot video': Raj Thackeray to MNS workers amid Marathi row

After two decades of political estrangement, Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray shared a stage in Mumbai in a rare display of unity amid the Marathi row in Maharashtra. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray in Mumbai.(PTI file) The event in Worli was called to celebrate the Maharashtra government's rollback of an order regarding the "imposition" of the Hindi language. Addressing the event, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray responded to the ongoing language row and criticism against his party workers. He told MNS workers "not to assault people for not speaking Marathi." "Be it Gujarati or anyone else here, must know Marathi, but there is no need to beat people for that if they don't speak Marathi. But if someone shows useless drama, you must hit below their eardrums," Raj Thackeray said. He also advised against recording the video of the incident, saying, "Let the person beaten up tell that he has been beaten up." "I tell you one more thing: if you beat someone, don't make a video of the incident. Let the person beaten up tell that he has been beaten up, you don't need to tell everyone that you have beaten someone," he added. The remark comes after the Maharashtra government in April this year implemented a three-language policy making Hindi mandatory as a third language in primary schools. The move drew huge backlash from the Opposition and language advocacy groups, following which it was revoked. Raj cites Balasaheb's English medium example Raj Thackeray also emphasised that there was no link between Marathi pride and an English-medium education. The MNS leader went on to cite the example of Dada Bhuse, who studied in Marathi schools and later became a minister in the Maharashtra cabinet. Also Read: 'Yes, we are goons… slap but don't make video' : Uddhav and Raj at Thackeray reunion rally over 'Marathi pride' "They say that our children have learnt in English medium schools. So what? Dada Bhuse studied in Marathi schools and became a minister. Devendra Fadnavis studied in an English-medium school and became the Maharashtra CM. So what?" he said. He went on to add that his father Shrikant Thackeray and uncle Balasaheb Thackeray also studied in English medium schools. "Can anyone raise a question about their love for Marathi? Tomorrow, I will learn Hebrew also. Will anyone raise a question about my pride in Marathi?" he asked. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray said he and Raj have come together to stay united and to capture power in the Mumbai civic body and Maharashtra.

Arrested terror suspect a ‘big fish' bomb maker, influenced by Zakir Naik: Andhra Police

'This fellow (Siddique) whom we caught is too big a fish than what we had thought…This fellow is too big a fellow, who had travelled all across the length and breadth of this country. Who frequently travelled to the Gulf also, Abubacker Siddique,' Praveen told PTI. Kurnool Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Koya Praveen said Abubacker Siddique operated as a lone wolf, providing his terror expertise to those who shared his radical ideology and was influenced by radical fugitive preacher Zakir Naik. Rayachoti (Andhra Pradesh), Jul 5 (PTI) The Andhra Pradesh police on Saturday identified one of the two terror suspects arrested here recently by Tamil Nadu police as a 'big fish', with advanced bomb making skills. Recently, Tamil Nadu's Anti-Terrorism Squad arrested Siddique and his accomplice Mohammed Ali in Rayachoti in Annamayya district. 'Zakir Naik school of thought. He is more of a lone wolf. Ideologically motivated and an expert in making IEDs and electronic devices, timer explosive devices,' said Praveen. According to police, Siddique is an expert maker of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), timer explosive devices and other highly lethal materials. Police conducted a fresh round of searches today at the duo's premises, but did not find any explosives. They managed to confiscate some documents and pen drives. Earlier, police recovered daggers, sickles, digital timers, clock switches, speed controllers, ball bearings, nuts and bolts, binoculars, walkie-talkies, mobile phones, and hacking software. They also seized maps of major Indian cities, coding manuals, ISIS-inspired literature, property documents, digital storage devices, cheque books, and financial records linked to suspicious transactions. On July 3, police disposed of a parcel bomb seized from them. After settling in Rayachoti, the DIG noted that Siddique, who is in his mid-50s, had carried out the bomb blast at BJP's Malleshwaram office in Bengaluru. Siddique was allegedly involved in the 2011 pipe-bomb planting attempt during BJP veteran and former Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani's rath yatra in Tamil Nadu's Madurai, among other terror activities.
