About Grok 4: Elon Musk's New Chatbot That's "Smarter Than All Graduates"
The new model came over 24 hours after xAI was forced to remove inappropriate Grok 3 posts from X that included antisemitic comments and replies to users. Grok 3 came under scrutiny after it seemingly went off the rails following an update over the weekend that instructed the chatbot to "not shy away from making claims which are politically incorrect, as long as they are well substantiated."
"We need to make sure that the AI is a good AI," Musk said at the launch of Grok 4 on Wednesday, without acknowledging the offending Grok 3 posts or controversy. The xAI team introduced the new chatbot during a livestream on X, calling the release an era of "Big Bang Intelligence."

Grok 4 is "smarter than almost all graduate students, in all disciplines, simultaneously," according to Musk. He said he team has "run out of test questions to ask...Reality is the ultimate reasoning test."
About Grok 4
The new AI chatbot includes improved voice conversations, with the xAI team touting benchmarks showing the new AI system scoring higher than OpenAI and others.
"At times it may lack common sense, and it has not yet invented new technologies or discovered new physics, but that is just a matter of time," Musk said.
Grok 4 is trained on xAI's Colossus supercomputer and promises real-time web access through its DeepSearch tool and advanced scientist-level reasoning. It's a coding-focused variant and aims to debug, write, and explain code with greater accuracy, like OpenAI's Code Interpreter or GitHub's Copilot.

He pointed out that the rapid adoption of generative AI has raised legal and ethical questions that didn't even exist a year ago. Von, who expressed hesitation about using ChatGPT due to privacy concerns, found Altman's warning validating. The OpenAI chief acknowledged that the absence of clear regulations could be a barrier for users who might otherwise benefit from the chatbot's assistance. 'It makes sense to want privacy clarity before you use it a lot,' Altman said, agreeing with Von's skepticism. Chats Can Be Accessed and Stored According to OpenAI's own policies, conversations from users on the free tier can be retained for up to 30 days for safety and system improvement, though they may sometimes be kept longer for legal reasons. This means chats are not end-to-end encrypted like on messaging platforms such as WhatsApp or Signal. OpenAI staff may access user inputs to optimize the AI model or monitor misuse. The privacy issue is not just theoretical. OpenAI is currently involved in a lawsuit with The New York Times, which has brought the company's data storage practices under scrutiny. A court order related to the case has reportedly required OpenAI to retain and potentially produce user conversations—excluding those from its ChatGPT Enterprise customers. Meta names ChatGPT co-creator Shengjia Zhao as Chief Scientist of superintelligence lab
Meta Platforms has appointed Shengjia Zhao , co-creator of ChatGPT , as chief scientist of its Superintelligence Lab , CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on Friday, as the company accelerates its push into advanced AI. "In this role, Shengjia will set the research agenda and scientific direction for our new lab working directly with me and Alex," Zuckerberg wrote in a Threads post, referring to Meta's Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, who Zuckerberg hired from startup Scale AI when Meta took a big stake in it. Zhao, a former research scientist at OpenAI , co-created ChatGPT, GPT-4 and several of OpenAI's mini models, including 4.1 and o3. He is among several researchers who have moved from OpenAI to Meta in recent weeks, part of a broader talent arms race as Zuckerberg aggressively hires from rivals to close the gap in advanced AI. Meta has been offering some of Silicon Valley's most lucrative pay packages and striking startup deals to attract top researchers, a strategy that follows the underwhelming performance of its Llama 4 model. Tesla gets multiple shareholder proposals related to investment in xAI
Tesla said on Friday it had received a number of shareholder proposals regarding the company's plan to invest in CEO Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup xAI. Musk ruled out a merger between Tesla and xAI earlier in July, but said he planned to hold a shareholder vote on investment in the startup by the automaker. The proposals come amid significant funding activity for xAI this year. The startup completed a $5 billion debt raise alongside a separate $5 billion strategic equity investment, Morgan Stanley said last month. Musk has pursued an integration strategy across his business empire, with xAI acquiring social media platform X in March for $33 billion to enhance its chatbot training capabilities, while also integrating the Grok chatbot into Tesla vehicles. The potential investment discussion comes as Tesla faces various challenges, including Musk's political activities, which have impacted demand for its electric vehicles and triggered a 22% drop in its shares this year. "Shareholders are welcome to put forward any shareholder proposals they'd like," Musk said on Tesla's quarterly earnings call on Wednesday. Tesla, which will hold its annual shareholder meeting on November 6, said it would only include one proposal on each topic in its proxy statement, in accordance with the SEC rules. Earlier this month, the board set July 31 as the deadline for the submission of shareholder proposals to be included in the proxy statement.
