Article content Article content 'The problem right now is that over eight years now of posting bonds, these companies are stretched. It's hard for them to find any more collateral to basically back their guarantee to the United States,' said Menzies. Article content 'In a lot of cases, these people have made guarantees on their personal homes, not just their businesses, on their personal homes, to be able to do this.' Article content The recent increases have been made retroactive to 2023, which Menzies says further risks causing many smaller companies in the wood products sector to collapse. Article content Prime Minister Mark Carney made Tuesday's announcement in West Kelowna and said $700 million of the $1.2 billion will go toward loan guarantees to help companies restructure operations while the remaining $500 million will be used to help them develop new products and diversify their markets. Article content Article content He added that a further $500 million will be spent on programs to help retrain workers who end up losing their jobs as a result of the challenges facing the softwood industry. Article content Article content 'At this hinge moment in history, Canada is starting to shift from reliance to resilience,' Carney said, acknowledging that 90 per cent of Canadian timber exports currently go to the United States. 'Together we are going to write our own story, rather than let others dictate theirs to us.' Article content To help reduce that reliance on the United States, Carney said Ottawa will prioritize the use of Canadian lumber as part of his signature Build Canada Homes Plan, which seeks to build 500,000 homes annually over the next 10 years. Article content Kim Haakstad, CEO of the B.C. Council of Forest Industries, said she is glad to see the federal government step up to help alleviate some of the challenges caused by American duties but also wants to see the province do its part to ensure the B.C. forestry sector remains competitive within Canada.

Alberta reviewing controversial U.S. musician's application to play at legislature grounds
The Alberta government says it is reviewing a permit application by U.S.-based Christian musician Sean Feucht to play at the legislature grounds in Edmonton later this month. Article content Feucht, 41, is a singer, songwriter, and founder of the Let Us Worship organization. Article content Article content He has drawn controversy and cancellations during the initial Canadian dates of his tour and is scheduled to play at the bandshell on the Alberta legislature grounds on the evening of Aug. 22. Article content Article content Last month, Infrastructure told Postmedia that organizers for Feucht's tour had submitted an incomplete event permit application, but that the department was assisting them in submitting a complete application. Article content Article content He began his Canadian tour on the east coast but was forced to find alternate venues for performances in Charlottetown, Fredericton, Quebec City, Moncton, Montreal, and Gatineau, Que. after permits were withdrawn due to security concerns or local codes of conduct related to use of public venues. Article content Feucht has threatened lawsuits in response to the cancellations, arguing his Charter right to practise religion was being infringed on. Article content Those performances drew protesters angry over what they see as Feucht's hateful views on the LGBTQ+ community, which he has called 'a cult bent on perverting and destroying the innocence of every child they can,' as well as on abortion laws, which he said 'feverishly promote the slaughter of the unborn and the newborn.' Article content Article content Feuch has used members of the far-right Proud Boys extremist group as his security detail and has referred to the Black Lives Matter movement as 'shady' and a 'fraud.' Article content Article content He has also shared his affinity for U.S. President Donald Trump and ran unsuccessfully in 2020 as a Republican candidate for Congress in California. Article content Alberta Infrastructure says ongoing security assessments are done for all scheduled events held at the legislature grounds. Article content A Montreal church that hosted his concert was fined $2,500 after allowing Feucht's event to proceed without a permit, with the city's mayor stating, 'freedom of expression is one of our fundamental values, but hateful and discriminatory speech is not acceptable.' Article content Feucht's tour is slated to resume on Friday in Rochester, N.Y., and is scheduled to return to Canada for five events, starting Aug. 20 in Winnipeg though the city has also denied him a permit citing safety concerns from the un-ticketed event event stating, 'it is not operationally feasible' without a better idea of how many will attend.

Carney pledges $1.2 billion for lumber sector hit by Trump
Article content Prime Minister Mark Carney promised as much as $1.2 billion to shore up Canada's lumber industry, which has been hit hard by United States duties that are about to significantly increase. Article content Carney said Tuesday that up to $700 million in loan guarantees will help forestry companies of all sizes maintain and restructure their operations. He also pledged $500 million in grants and contributions for product development and market diversification. Article content Article content Article content 'Canada does not dump lumber into the United States, and we will continue to make the case that these current and proposed duties are unjustified,' Carney said in West Kelowna, British Columbia. Article content Article content 'We are a vital supplier to our southern neighbor, representing around a quarter of the U.S. market and helping to keep down the costs of American homes.' Article content The dispute between the U.S. and Canada over softwood lumber stretches back decades, with the U.S. periodically imposing duties to counteract what it claims are unfair Canadian government subsidies. Article content The U.S. Commerce Department is expected on Friday to conclude hiking duties on Canadian softwood to about 35 per cent from a previous total of 14.4 per cent. That's a combination of anti-dumping and countervailing duties. Article content U.S. President Donald Trump has escalated the fight even further, ordering an increase to U.S. lumber production and an investigation of the national security risk of lumber imports. The probe is under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, which Trump has already used to place new tariffs on steel, aluminum and copper. Article content Article content Canada shipped $40.3 billion of forest products and building and packaging materials to the U.S. last year, its fifth-largest category of exports to its largest trading partner. Article content Article content Carney said his government would launch its promised homebuilding agency, called Build Canada Homes, in the fall, which will prioritize Canadian lumber, steel and aluminum in construction. It will also require companies contracting with the federal government to source domestic lumber. Article content As well, the government will draft new initiatives to diversify international markets for Canadian lumber, along with retraining programs for workers, he said. Article content Canada has long denied the U.S. claim that it sets artificially low 'stumpage rates,' fees sawmills pay to provinces to harvest timber from government-owned forests. The World Trade Organization in 2020 largely backed Canada's argument that U.S. levies were unfair.
