Rory McIlroy's 'disgusting behaviour' claim from PGA Tour star's dad rubbished by Open winner
Two-time major champion Tony Jacklin has fired back at the father of 2024 Open winner Xander Schauffele, after he stated he would boycott the Ryder Cup. Stefan Schauffele criticised Rory McIlroy's conduct at the 2023 Ryder Cup as "disgusting."
McIlroy was involved in a confrontation with members of the US team and exchanged heated words with Patrick Cantlay's caddie, Joe LaCava, at Italy's Marco Simone Golf and Country Club. Europe ultimately secured a 161⁄2-111⁄2 victory at the event.
The dispute escalated when McIlroy felt that Cantlay celebrated his match-winning putt for too long, preventing him from finishing his own game. The altercation continued in a car park, where McIlroy was overheard calling the situation "a f*****g disgrace."
The issue was eventually resolved, with LaCava reportedly offering an apology, reports Belfast Live. However, Schauffele Snr's remarks have irked 81-year-old Jacklin, a Hall of Famer and former Ryder Cup captain.
Speaking to Champions (UK) Plc, a business consultancy based in the Midlands, Jacklin defended the competitive spirit of the Ryder Cup.
He said: "One thing that p****d me off was the comments from Stefan Schauffele, when he said the Ryder Cup is losing its lustre because of the behaviour of the players and fans, and said Rory's reaction last time was 'disgusting'.
"But Rory was absolutely right in what he did. You'll always get heated moments in matches. I remember in Boston when the Americans ran on the green, I was the first to say there was no malice behind it, and that it was just pure exuberance.
"Obviously there has to be that mutual respect between the teams, but there's always elements of the media that take them out of context. The Ryder Cup is still a must-watch, a hugely important event in the game of golf. I have every reason to believe Europe can do it again."
The 2023 incident also saw Shane Lowry quickly usher McIlroy away from the clubhouse and into a courtesy car after the golf star was seen angrily shouting near Justin Thomas' caddie Jim 'Bones' Mackay.
McIlroy later admitted that he experienced a moment of "red mist" during the altercation but assured that they resolved the issue afterwards. "Things happen in the heat of the moment, tensions were high," McIlroy said to the BBC."Joe LaCava came into the European team room on the Sunday night and had a drink and a chat."
Last week, Schaufelle Snr shocked the golfing world by announcing his decision to skip the New York-based competition in September.
Stefan expressed his frustration with the abuse Lowry's wife, Wendy, endured at the 2021 contest at Whistling Straits and the ongoing controversy over US stars receiving payments to play in the prestigious tournament.
"I'm not going to the Ryder Cup," he said. "I'm afraid of what's going to happen in New York. I was there [at Whistling Straits in 2021] when they called Shane Lowry's wife a w**** in front of him. I couldn't believe my ears.
"I saw what happened in Rome [in 2023]. That was utterly disgusting, claiming this money bulls***. And Rory behaved disgustingly in my opinion. It's only going to get worse. It's ruined my appetite for the Ryder Cup. It becomes unwatchable." The 45th Ryder Cup is set to take place at the Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, New York, from September 26–28, 2025.

Hannah Hampton pays tribute to grandad who died before Euro 2025 in touching post
England hero Hannah Hampton has marked Sunday's triumph in the Euro 2025 final by sharing a poignant social media post paying tribute to her grandfather, who died shortly before the tournament Hannah Hampton has penned a beautiful tribute to her grandfather following England's Euro 2025 triumph, revealing that he sadly passed away just two days before the start of the tournament. Hampton, 24, was the Lionesses hero in a dramatic penalty shootout against Spain in Sunday's final, saving two spot-kicks to inspire England to a second consecutive European title. And she marked the occasion by sharing a poignant post on her Instagram account paying tribute to her late grandfather, who was 'one of her biggest supporters'. "Dear Grandpa," she wrote. "Two days before the biggest tournament of my life, you left. It still doesn't feel real. I kept thinking when I'd call nannie I'd hear your voice again - one of your jokes, or one of those little comments you'd make that somehow said everything without saying much at all. "You were one of my biggest supporters. You believed in me before I even knew what this journey would look like. You were always there - watching, encouraging, teaching. You taught me so much, not just about football, but about life. About staying grounded, working hard, being resilient and doing things the right way. "I miss our chats. I miss you saying 'Only us athletes understand' — always with a little smirk like you were in on something special. And you were. You got it. You understood what this meant to me. You understood what it took. "It breaks my heart that you didn't get to see me walk out for our country at my first major tournament... something you dreamed of for me, something we talked about so many times. I wanted to see your face or hear your voice after the game calling back home. I wanted to share that with you. "But I know, deep down, you were still there. I felt you with me. In the tunnel. On the pitch. In the tough moments. I heard you in my head when I needed strength. "I hope I made you proud, Grandpa. I carried you through every minute. "And I always will. I did it. WE DID IT."

Rude wash-bag message from boss helped inspire England to Euro glory
The Lionesses defended the title they first won three years ago at Wembley with a 3-1 penalty shootout victory over world champions Spain in Basel after extra time ended in a 1-1 draw. It was revenge for their 1-0 loss to the same side in the 2023 World Cup final, but required a campaign of crazy comebacks and must-win victories in every match following their opening loss to France. 'Sarina had a certain little way of motivating us,' said Mead, after the Lionesses became the first English football team to secure a major trophy on foreign soil. 'It was great, it was funny, it was everything. She did it again tonight. 'She had a little toiletry bag that said b****** get s*** done, and b****** got s*** done today. That is it, drop the mic.' Mead's Arsenal team-mate Mariona Caldentey opened the scoring for Spain in the 25th minute, ensuring England would require a third consecutive comeback to make it back-to-back European titles and seal a third straight for Wiegman, who lifted the same trophy with the Netherlands in 2017. Alessia Russo nodded home Chloe Kelly's cross after the break to ultimately force a shootout, then sealed by substitute Kelly's emphatic top-corner spot kick. Kelly's winner was the best birthday present imaginable for major tournament debutant Aggie Beever-Jones, who turned 22 on Sunday and was serenaded by supporters who sang 'Happy Birthday' during the final. 'It's such an incredible tournament, back-to-back champions,' she said. 'The girls have done a brilliant job. I couldn't have had a better birthday than this. What a present! This will be the best day of my life. I can't quite believe it.' Mead added: 'It's what dreams are made of, Ags!'
