New York shooting: gunman kills four people at Manhattan skyscraper

The Guardian29-07-2025
A gunman killed four people at a Manhattan skyscraper that houses the headquarters of the NFL and the offices of several major financial firms before turning the gun on himself, New York officials have said.
An NYPD officer identified as Didarul Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh and a father of two whose wife is pregnant, was among those killed. He was working off-hours as a security guard at the time, New York mayor Eric Adams told reporters, describing him as a 'true blue hero'.
Authorities offered few details about the three other victims killed by the suspect – two men and a woman. A third male was gravely wounded by the gunfire and was 'fighting for his life' in a nearby hospital, the mayor said.
Jessica Tisch, the New York City police commissioner, confirmed that 'the lone shooter has been neutralized'. New York police also said the shooter acted alone and was dead.
Tisch said the gunman, identified as Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old Las Vegas resident with a history of mental illness, had driven cross-country to New York in recent days.
The shooting spree in the evening rush hour began in the lobby of the Park Avenue tower in Midtown Manhattan. Tisch said that surveillance videos showed the gunman exiting a double-parked Black BMW between 51st and 52nd street on Park Avenue.
He allegedly opened fire immediately after entering the tower's lobby, shooting multiple people. Police said that the gunman let a woman exit the elevator unharmed, and then took the elevator to the 33rd floor, the offices of Rudin Management Company, a behemoth New York real estate firm.
Tisch said that the gunman opened fire on the 33rd floor and killed one person. The gunman then went to the stairwell and shot himself with an assault rifle, she said.
Photographs show people exiting the building around 7pm ET with hands raised.
Tisch said that the NYPD found weapons in the parked BMW, as well as a prescription in Tamura's name.
Tisch said Tamura entered the office fresh after driving across the country, making stops in Colorado, Nebraska and Iowa. Tamura's final alleged stop was in New Jersey at 4.24pm ET.
The NYPD believes that the shooting was an isolated incident.
US House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries expressed his concern over the 'horrific shooting', and said he was 'praying hard' for the NYPD officer.
'May God watch over our city during this challenging moment,' Jeffries wrote in a post.
A large police presence converged on the area around the tower, according to Reuters journalists near the scene.
'I just saw a lot of commotion and cops and people screaming,' said Russ McGee, a 31-year-old sports bettor who was working out in a gym adjacent to the skyscraper, told Reuters in an interview near the scene.
The office building at 345 Park Avenue occupies an entire city block and houses the corporate offices for the National Football League and the headquarters of investment firm Blackstone. It also holds offices for JP Morgan Chase.
According to an ESPN reporter, Jeff Darlington, an NFL security alert was sent to employees: 'Do not exit the building. Secure your location and hide until law enforcement clears your floor. Please switch phones to silent.'
This shooting is the 254th mass shooting in the US this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit that tracks gun-related violence, who defines a mass shooting as an incident in which four or more people, excluding the shooter, are killed or injured by firearms.

July 2025 was one of the safest summer months on record in New York City

New York City's summer crime wave? More like a summer crime ripple. The NYPD just dropped stats showing that July 2025 wasn't just safer than last summer—it was one of the safest Julys since the city started keeping records. Across the five boroughs, shootings hit all-time lows for the month, with just 75 incidents and 92 victims, per a recently released report. That's down from the previous record in July 2017, when 79 incidents and 102 victims were recorded. And it wasn't just July: The first seven months of 2025 also saw the lowest number of shootings (412) and shooting victims (489) since the NYPD began tracking the category in the 1990s. Even the notoriously tricky Fourth of July weekend, a time police say can spike gun violence, saw the lowest shooting totals ever recorded for the holiday—and tied the all-time low for the day itself. Overall, major crime fell 5.6-percent in July compared to last year, marking the 10th straight month of declines. Murders dropped nearly in half (25 vs. 49), burglaries were down 14.2-percent, robberies dipped 7.5-percent and felony assaults fell 8.1-percent. In the subway, July crime was the lowest on record, excluding the pandemic's ridership-starved summers of 2020–2021. Mayor Eric Adams and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch credit the gains to 'precision policing' and the city's Summer Violence Reduction Plan. Since May, the NYPD has deployed more than 2,000 uniformed officers to 72 'summer zones' in precincts, public housing and transit hubs, focusing on high-priority crime hot spots. The payoff: Major crime in those zones is down over 20-percent during deployment hours, with shootings cut in half. Guns remain a big part of the NYPD's focus: More than 3,000 illegal firearms have been seized this year and more than 22,900 since Adams took office. Gang takedowns are also up, with 48 major busts so far in 2025 leading to 347 arrests and 236 guns recovered. Not every number trended downward. Reported rapes rose 33-percent year-over-year in July, an increase officials link to changes in state law last fall that broadened the definition of rape to include more forms of sexual assault. Still, city officials are quick to point out the larger trajectory. 'This is the safest big city in America,' Adams said, noting that while high-profile incidents like last week's Midtown mass shooting grab headlines, they happen against a backdrop of historically low crime rates.

Iran executes man accused of passing information on nuclear scientist to Israel

DUBAI, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Iran executed a man on Wednesday convicted of spying for Israel and passing on information about a nuclear scientist killed in Israel's June attacks on the Islamic Republic, the judiciary's news outlet Mizan reported. The report said the man, named Rouzbeh Vadi, had worked in one of Iran's "important and sensitive organisations," without going into further detail. Executions of Iranians convicted of spying for Israel has significantly increased this year, with at least eight death sentences carried out in recent months. The report said Vadi had "committed a wide range of crimes against the country's internal and external security which have caused severe disruption to public order". Israel launched 12 days of air strikes in June, targeting Iran's top generals and nuclear scientists. Iran retaliated with barrages of missiles and drones.

Russia hit key Ukraine gas interconnector to undermine preparation for winter, Kyiv says

KYIV, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Russia has struck a gas pumping station in Ukraine's southern Odesa region used in a scheme to import LNG from the U.S. and Azerbaijan, undermining preparations for winter, Ukrainian officials said on Wednesday. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the gas infrastructure had been attacked in the village of Novosilske on the border with Romania, where the Orlovka interconnector, through which Ukraine receives gas via the Transbalkan route, is located. "This was a deliberate blow to our preparations for the heating season, absolutely cynical, like every Russian blow to the energy sector," Zelenskiy said on Telegram. Reuters could not independently confirm details of the attack. Russia's TASS news agency quoted the Russian defence ministry as confirming the attack on Ukraine's gas transport system. Ukraine has faced a serious gas shortage since a series of devastating Russian missile strikes this year, which significantly reduced domestic production. Ukraine's energy ministry said in a statement that the attacked station was used as part of a route connecting Greek LNG terminals with Ukrainian gas storage facilities via the Transbalkan gas pipeline. It noted that it had already been used to deliver LNG from the United States and test volumes of Azerbaijani gas. "This is a Russian strike purely against civilian infrastructure, deliberately targeting the energy sector and, at the same time, relations with Azerbaijan, the United States and partners in Europe, as well as the normal lives of Ukrainians and all Europeans," the ministry said. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev will meet U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington this week. Russia has repeatedly denied targeting civilians since launching its full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than three years ago, but says infrastructure such as energy systems are legitimate targets because they help Ukraine's war effort. Earlier on Wednesday, the governor of the southern Odesa region reported an attack on the main gas pipeline. Ukrainian energy officials did not say whether gas would continue to be pumped via the interconnector. Kyiv says 0.4 million cubic metres of gas was scheduled to be pumped through Orlovka on Wednesday. Last month, Ukraine pumped a small test volume of Azerbaijani gas through the Transbalkan route for the first time and announced plans to significantly increase gas imports from Azerbaijan's SOCAR energy firm. Kyiv has called the route "extremely important", as it provides access to liquefied gas from Greek and Turkish LNG terminals, Azerbaijani and Romanian pipeline gas and, potentially, to Bulgarian offshore gas.
