‘Journalists are guardians of truth, storytellers of diverse community'

SIBU: Journalists are more than just reporters; they are connectors, guardian of truths and storytellers of our diverse community, said Sibu Journalists Association (SJA) chairwoman Florence Nervyn.
Speaking at the SJA installation and Gawai celebration held at a hotel here on Monday, she emphasised that in today's fast-moving world, credible journalism is more important than ever.
'Let us lead with vision, act with courage, and serve with a true heart. Our association must not only survive, but also thrive by embracing innovation, strengthening collaborations and uplifting the next generation of media professionals,' she said.
Florence added that SJA, established since 1993, has been more than just a group of journalists.
'We are a family. We work with dedication to inform, educate, and serve the people of Sibu.'
As such, she urged elected representatives and community leaders to continue rendering their support to SJA's programmes and initiatives.
She said their moral and financial support would empower SJA to organise training workshops, media literacy campaigns, youth engagement programmes, and platforms to strengthen media-community relations.
'With your support, we can do even more for the betterment of Sibu and Sarawak.'
Earlier, in his brief remarks, event organising chairman Akun Giman said the event holds dual significance: the swearing-in ceremony of the newly-elected SJA committee members for the 2025-2027 term, and the celebration of the Hari Gawai festival.
'Let us extend our heartfelt congratulations to the new committee, who have stepped up to lead and serve our association with dedication, integrity, and passion,' he said.
Akun also highlighted that Gawai is a meaningful celebration, marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of a new chapter.
'Gawai is more than just a festival — it is a tribute to our ancestral heritage, a celebration of community and resilience, and a moment to give thanks for the blessings of the past while looking ahead to a brighter future,' he added.
Meanwhile, activities to spruce up the celebration included a 'poco-poco' dance, a 'tuak'-drinking competition, and the King and Queen competition.
Journalist Peter Wee also entertained guests with several song performances, adding cheer to the evening.
The highlight of the celebration was the lucky draw.
Among those in attendance were Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker and Lanang MP Alice Lau; Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh; Sibu MP Oscar Ling; Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng; political secretary to the Premier Joshua Ting, representing Dudong assemblyman Dato Sri Tiong King Sing; and Delta Leasing managing director Dr Gregory Hii.

Anwar: 13MP to narrow socio-economic gaps, boost resilience
KUALA LUMPUR: The 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) is set to mark a turning point in the nation's efforts to address various economic challenges, including development and income disparities. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the challenges requiring urgent attention include development and income inequality, limited fiscal space, and the slow pace of structural economic transition. He said the key policy document will be tabled during the upcoming Dewan Rakyat sitting. "The country must become more resilient in facing global economic risks and uncertainties, while accelerating structural transformation and narrowing socio-economic development gaps," he said in a Facebook post. Earlier, the prime minister chaired a discussion with senior government officials on the final preparations for the 13MP, which will cover the period from 2026 to 2030. Anwar said the preparation of the document began in the middle of last year. He added that it is the result of a team effort and reflects comprehensive feedback gathered from all stakeholders on the proposed strategies and initiatives. "This is the result of teamwork and extensive input from all stakeholders, including ministries, state governments, local authorities, civil society organisations (CSOs), and the public," he said.

Nangka rep reaffirms commitment to rural development during Gawai longhouse visits

SIBU (June 12): Nangka assemblyman Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee visited seven longhouses during the recent Gawai Dayak celebrations, reaffirming his commitment to basic infrastructure and utilities in the area – starting with the newly established Rumah Donny Nyanggai and Rumah Kawau Anggang. At Rumah Donny, a 12-door longhouse developed under the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), Dr Annuar announced several key initiatives. These include the construction of a paved access road, a public toilet facility, and the upgrading of the 'ruai' ceiling and flooring. A total of RM150,000 has already been allocated for the project. Dr Annuar, who also serves as the deputy minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, shared that gazettement of Rumah Donny is being considered to facilitate future development approvals. He emphasised that essential utilities – namely electricity, clean water supply, and telecommunications – are being prioritised. 'For electricity, internal wiring must be completed by certified contractors before Sarawak Energy Berhad can proceed with supply connection after Gawai or in the near future,' he explained. At Rumah Kawau Anggang, a 25-door longhouse, Dr Annuar gave assurance that clean water and electricity issues would be resolved promptly, with road access to the area also prioritised. To tackle internet challenges in rural areas, he proposed the use of Starlink satellite technology as a more efficient solution than building telecommunications towers, especially in sparsely populated areas. For 2026, Dr Annuar has approved RM300,000 for the installation of ceilings, lighting, and fans in the ruai areas across all 34 longhouses in his constituency as part of a broad upgrade initiative. During his stop at the Kemas kindergarten at Rumah Jawin Janting, Dr Annuat expressed commitment to work with local village chiefs Tuai Rumah Jawin, Tuai Rumah Jangan Pung, and Tuai Rumah Ba'ie Bundan to identify a suitable location for a children's playground. 'Although it may take some time, I will see to it that the playground becomes a reality,' he assured. Before lunch, he visited Rumah Ba'ie Bundan, where he approved the construction of 16 ruai door sections. In the afternoon, visits continued to Rumah Jangan Pung, Rumah Melissa Ilong and Rumah Jok Ingon. Gawai Dayak takes spotlight in KL as part of Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign

KUCHING (June 11): The vibrant spirit of the Gawai Dayak Festival came alive in Kuala Lumpur as Tourism Malaysia partnered with ibis KLCC to host a cultural showcase celebrating Sarawak's unique traditions and culinary delights. Held on Tuesday, the event was also part of the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign, aimed at promoting the Gawai Dayak celebration to both domestic and international guests. Tourism Malaysia Director-General Datuk Manoharan Periasamy officiated the two week-long event from June 8 to 22. The event highlighted Sarawak's diverse cuisine including Laksa Sarawak, Manok Pansoh (chicken cooked in bamboo), Nuba Laya (wild rice in leaf wrap), Umai, and the iconic 'kek lapis'. Guests were treated to traditional dance performances by a local troupe, showcasing Sarawak's rich cultural heritage and hospitality. 'The event is part of Tourism Malaysia's ongoing efforts to highlight the essence of Sarawak's vibrant culture and for everyone to join in the festivities and experience the warmth of Malaysian hospitality,' said Tourism Malaysia in a statement. According to the board, the event also aims to bridge cultural appreciation between Borneo and Peninsular Malaysia as part of VM2026 promotions. In a related update, Tourism Malaysia reported that the country welcomed 38 million international visitors in 2024, marking a 31.1 per cent increase from 2023 and an 8.3 per cent rise above pre-pandemic 2019 levels. Visitor receipts also surged significantly, generating RM106.78 billion – a 43.7 per cent jump from 2023 and 20 per cent more than 2019. 'This positive trend has carried into early 2025, with the first four months recording 13.4 million arrivals – a 21 per cent year-on-year increase,' Tourism Malaysia added.
