Backpack and a bottle: Tarik Skubal's gifts to Detroit Tigers rookie Troy Melton

Yahoo5 days ago
Detroit Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal walked into the clubhouse and placed a Louis Vuitton box in the locker that belongs to right-hander Troy Melton.
Inside the box?
A $3,000 backpack.
It was a veteran taking care of a rookie.
The Louis Vuitton transaction occurred Friday, Aug. 9, just a few hours before Skubal — the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner — led the Tigers into the first of three games in the series against the Los Angeles Angels at Comerica Park.
"It was the spur of the moment," said Skubal, who has pitched for the Tigers since 2020. "It wasn't planned. I saw the backpack he was wearing, and I wasn't a fan of it, so I told him he had until the end of the day to pick one out, and he did. I took care of him."
DETROIT'S ACE: Tigers president Scott Harris dismisses idea of Tarik Skubal window, calls it 'an illusion'
It's the first backpack Skubal has gifted to a younger player.
"I guess people took care of him before, so he's taking care of me now," Melton said. "That's way above my pay grade. I'm really happy with that. I appreciate it."
When Skubal made his MLB debut in 2020, veteran left-hander Matthew Boyd bought him his first suit — the same one he wore to the 2024 All-Star Game. Skubal didn't buy a second suit until he needed another one for the 2025 All-Star Game.
In 2022, veteran left-hander Eduardo Rodríguez gifted Skubal — in his third MLB season at the time — a Louis Vuitton backpack and sunglasses. Rodríguez also encouraged all the starters to watch bullpen sessions together.
The backpack tradition started with Rodríguez.
"Suits aren't a thing anymore," Skubal said. "That used to be a thing coming up, and now, we don't wear suits ever. I feel like that's been a tradition of taking care of younger guys on the team with backpacks, rather than suits."

In 2025, Skubal is one of the veterans in the clubhouse.
He's also one of the highest-paid pitchers.
Skubal is making $10.15 million in 2025, his second year of salary arbitration — ranking second on the Tigers' pitching staff behind Jack Flaherty's $25 million. He projects to earn at least $15 million in 2026, his third and final year of arbitration.
After that, Skubal becomes a free agent and could be the first MLB pitcher to sign a $400 million contract.
"I can afford stuff now," said Skubal, who earns more than $60,000 per game compared to Melton's approximately $4,500. "Not that I couldn't before, but I'm pretty comfortable financially. And I've been around this team for a long time. You just pay it forward. That's what veteran guys do."

FRIDAY'S BIG HIT: Matt Vierling finds impact with home run when Detroit Tigers need it most
After Skubal took care of Melton off the field, the rookie returned the favor to the veteran on the mound in the fifth inning of Friday's 6-5 win over the Angels.
Skubal failed to complete five innings for the first time in 38 starts.
Melton picked him up.
"Honestly, I didn't even stretch before," said Melton, a starter recently moved to the bullpen. "I was like, 'Oh, Skubal is on the mound. He'll take care of it.' It was the quickest call I've gotten in my career, so I had to get ready, but I was ready for the first pitch."
The Tigers summoned Melton out of the bullpen for a matchup with right-handed hitter Taylor Ward, inheriting a runner on first base with two outs. Had the runner scored, it would've been charged to Skubal.
Melton didn't let that happen.
"He's never had to run in," manager A.J. Hinch said, referencing Melton jogging from the bullpen to the mound during an inning. "He didn't even know when to stop running. Some guys run all the way to the mound. Some guys stop at the dirt."
On his sixth pitch, Melton struck out Ward swinging with a 97.7 mph four-seam fastball to end the fifth inning. He then pitched the sixth, seventh and eighth, limiting the Angels to one run throughout his 3⅓ innings.
Expect Melton to continue pitching in important situations.
"Looking back, I'm really glad he inherited a runner and started out of the stretch," Hinch said. "He came out of it with a punch out. That is a step forward. After that, it's just pitching."
Now Skubal owes Melton another gift, which he can expect in his locker soon.
"I probably owe him a bottle of something really nice," Skubal said.

Aaron Rodgers, T.J. Watt, and most other Steelers stars will skip preseason meeting with Tampa Bay

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Mike Tomlin is in no rush to see Aaron Rodgers in a game situation. The NFL's oldest player is going to sit out Pittsburgh's meeting with Tampa Bay, meaning the four-time MVP most likely won't make his official debut with the Steelers until the season opener against the New York Jets on Sept. 7. While Tomlin declined to officially rule out Rodgers for Pittsburgh's preseason finale with Carolina on Aug. 21, the NFL's longest tenured coach has rarely made starters available for the final exhibition game. Star outside linebacker T.J. Watt, wide receiver DK Metcalf, defensive back Jalen Ramsey and tight ends Jonnu Smith and Pat Freiermuth also will sit out for a second straight week. Linebacker Patrick Queen and defensive end Cam Heyward — who is 'holding in' amid a contract dispute — also will get the day off. 'Some of those veteran guys I mentioned have been doing it for a long time and particularly at a high level,' Tomlin said. 'Coupled with the fact that I've liked what I've seen from them in a practice setting, is the reason why sometimes I move that collective out of the way.' ___ AP NFL:

From otters to sourdough, everything we learned about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's romance on the 'New Heights' podcast

Swift appeared on the Aug. 13 episode of 'New Heights' alongside Kelce and his brother, Jason. They're not fighting the alchemy. Taylor Swift appeared on boyfriend Travis Kelce's podcast New Heights to talk about her new album The Life of a Showgirl, and over the course of the episode, also gave fans major insight into their relationship of more than two years. This is the first time that Swift has appeared on New Heights, which Kelce hosts with his brother Jason. But it's not surprising that Swift and Kelce flaunted their love on the mic: the two have hardly been shy about how much they care for each other, with plenty of paparazzi photos documenting their PDA at events like the U.S. Open and the Super Bowl. Just this week, Kelce gushed over his girlfriend in an interview for GQ. Swift, meanwhile, has brought Kelce into the fold on the Eras Tour, shouting him out as 'the guy on the Chiefs' in her song 'Karma' and even performing alongside him for a special version of 'I Can Do It With a Broken Heart.' Yet the New Heights podcast — the most-watched in the podcast's history at 10 million views on YouTube alone — gave nearly two hours of Swelce content, revealing more about their relationship than ever before. Here's what we learned: The friendship bracelet saga Swift and Kelce's romance began after the NFL player attended the Kansas City stop of the Eras Tour in July 2023. Kelce was enamored with Swift following her performance, and was disappointed that he couldn't meet up with her after the show in order to give her a friendship bracelet he made her — something he spoke about on New Heights back in July 2023. On her episode of New Heights, Swift teased that Kelce 'threw a tantrum' — despite not even reaching out to her management about securing a meeting. 'This dude didn't get a meet and greet and he's making it everyone's problem, that's what I thought at first,' Swift joked. But after the podcast aired, Swift said she started hearing from mutual friends that Kelce was actually a good guy, prompting her to schedule a meetup. 'I was like, if this guy isn't crazy — which is a big if,' she said, 'this is sort of what I've been writing songs about wanting to happen to me since I was a teenager.' Kelce supported Swift when she got her masters back On New Heights, Swift spoke about her long journey to gain ownership over her masters, something that she's wanted for her entire music career. When she received the phone call from her mother Andrea Swift that said she was finally able to purchase her masters, Swift went to Kelce crying. Kelce, apparently, also had an emotional reaction. 'I started crying, too,' Kelce said on the podcast, to which Swift added, 'You were weeping.' 'I was just so happy for you, because I've seen, I've seen how you make music. I've seen how you make these videos,' he explained. Swift loves to bake for Kelce — and the whole family Swift joked that she gets into a new baking obsession 'every six months' — and that the Kelce family reaps the benefits. She sent Kelce sourdough loafs while the athlete was at training camp, and also made a funfetti sourdough bread for Kelce's brother and New Heights co-host Jason Kelce's four daughters. 'We put sprinkles in everything when we hang out,' Swift said. 'She's a loafer for life now,' Kelce joked. Kelce loves otters The couple admitted that the internet can be a tough place, given how many people want to weigh in on their lives — but it's also a beautiful one, because 'Travis shows me videos of otters on his Instagram algorithm,' Swift said. 'I want a wild otter so bad,' Kelce said. Kelce's heard the 'bangers' on Unsurprisingly, Kelce has already heard The Life of a Showgirl, and loves the new album, which he called a 'complete 180' from a lot of the songs on her previous album The Tortured Poets Department. 'I've been fortunate enough to hear every single song on here, so I know they're all 12 bangers,' he said. 'It's a lot more upbeat, and it's a lot more like fun pop, like excitement.' Swift and Kelce tune out the noise around their relationship While many people have commented — and speculated — about the state of her and Kelce's romance, Swift told Jason on the podcast that she tries to stay tuned out of the noise online. 'Anything you feed your brain, it will internalize,' Swift said. 'Anything you feed the internet, it will kill. I've been in the music industry for 20 years — it's pretty hard to hurt my feelings.' Kelce admitted he was worried about some of the 'wacko theories' that emerged when they first started dating, and was concerned it could 'screw up' his romance with Swift. 'Her being so calm, cool, collected and so just real and understanding about everything that's going on really made me grow up real fast in that, in that aspect of things,' he said. Swift also shared that Kelce's ability to laugh off comments online has helped her shake them off, too. 'I think the fact that you genuinely find a lot of online discourse to be truly hilarious, that changes things for me,' she said. 'If he's seeing things and he thinks it's funny and it doesn't even affect his day at all, that's really completely bled into the way that I metabolize these things.' Solve the daily Crossword

Aaron Rodgers, along with other Steelers veterans, won't play in second preseason game versus Buccaneers

The Pittsburgh Steelers' opponent has changed, but the same thing can't be said for Mike Tomlin's approach to player participation this preseason. For the second week in a row, the longtime Steelers head coach is keeping a crew of veterans, namely quarterback Aaron Rodgers, sidelined during exhibition play, this time on Saturday at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "I'm going to play this preseason game very much like we did the first one, in terms of participation," Tomlin told reporters Thursday. "The same collection of guys that were held out the last time will comprise the guys that are held out this time." In other words, Rodgers; wide receiver DK Metcalf; running back Jaylen Warren; tight ends Pat Freiermuth and Jonnu Smith; guard Isaac Seumalo; defensive tackle Cam Heyward; linebacker Patrick Queen; edge rushers T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith; cornerbacks Jalen Ramsey, Darius Slay and Joey Porter Jr.; and safety DeShon Elliott won't take the field. "We'll make our decisions on a week-to-week basis," Tomlin said, "based on development and performance. As I mentioned repeatedly in this process, different guys for a variety of reasons need different amounts of work in an effort to be ready and in an effort for us to evaluate their talent level or what they're capable of. "Some of those veteran guys I mentioned have been doing it for a long time, and particularly at a high level, coupled with the fact that I've liked what I've seen from them in a practice setting." Rodgers, a four-time NFL MVP who is now with his third team at 41 years old, signed with the Steelers on a one-year deal ahead of mandatory minicamp in June. While he won't take his first game snaps with the Steelers this weekend, he can still get meaningful reps against the Bucs Thursday during the teams' joint practice. Tomlin said that although Pittsburgh will follow its normal practice schedule Thursday, it will make the most of an opportunity to face unfamiliar faces and schemes. He mentioned the potential growth that could be had by going up against six-time Pro Bowl receiver Mike Evans in tight red zone, plus the challenge that comes with blocking nose tackle Vita Vea and linebacker Lavonte David in team run periods. "It's good to go against a different team [because] ... you get a chance to go against not-vanilla defenses,' Rodgers said Tuesday, per The Associated Press. "So hopefully [Tampa Bay head coach] Todd [Bowles], he probably won't show everything, but he'll do some stuff to stress our protection and give us a chance to get some film to work on."
