Manama Health Congress Announces Fourth Edition in Partnership with Arab Hospitals Federation
Manama: Dr. Mariam Al Jalahma, CEO of Government Hospitals, has announced the fourth edition of the Manama Health Congress and Expo, which will gather leading healthcare experts and specialists from around the globe to explore the latest developments and trends in the sector.
According to Bahrain News Agency, Dr. Al Jalahma stated that the conference, titled 'Shaping the Future of Healthcare and Insights,' will focus on technological advancements, smart hospitals, and the use of information systems and artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the quality of healthcare services. She emphasized that the event will be held in collaboration with the Arab Hospitals Federation, which will play a crucial role in ensuring the success of the congress and exhibition by providing a professional platform for knowledge exchange and networking among healthcare professionals.
The announcement was made during a press conference organized by Government Hospitals, attended by Fadi Alama, President of the Arab Hospitals Federation, and Alice Boueiz, Executive Director of the Federation, on the sidelines of the Arab Health Conference and Exhibition in Dubai. The event was held to announce the fourth edition of Manama Health, which is scheduled to take place from December 11-13 in partnership with the Arab Hospitals Federation.
Dr. Al Jalahma also introduced a new initiative aimed at promoting the responsible and secure use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. The initiative focuses on ensuring that AI-driven innovations enhance the quality of medical services while maintaining patient safety and ethical standards. It seeks to establish guidelines for the safe integration of AI technologies in the healthcare sector, reinforcing accountability in their application and safeguarding against potential risks.
Alama underscored the Federation's commitment to advancing the healthcare sector, driving innovation, and enhancing collaboration across the Arab world. He highlighted the impact of the strategies and visions that will be discussed in shaping the future of healthcare both within the region and beyond. Alama expressed appreciation for this constructive partnership, which seeks to ensure the continued development of healthcare services with a strong focus on patient-centered care, sustainability, and innovation.
Bouiez expressed her pride in the Federation's participation in the conference and exhibition, reflecting its commitment to advancing technological innovation and ensuring the secure and effective integration of AI in healthcare to enhance service quality in the region. The World Health Organisation (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Health Professionals' Education Development, affiliated with the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at the Arabian Gulf University (AGU), will hold a virtual workshop titled 'Modern Assessment Methods in Health Professions Education' in collaboration with the WHO Office on 23 June. The workshop will be presented by Professor Muhamad Saiful Bahri, professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Universiti Putra Malaysia and a leading expert in the field of curriculum development and modern assessment methods in medical education. BSA Launches "Essentials in Space Medicine" in Partnership with AGU and International Organisations
The international training workshop 'Essentials in Space Medicine' was launched at the Princess Al Jawhara Centre at Arabian Gulf University (AGU). Organised by the Bahrain Space Agency (BSA) in collaboration with AGU, the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), the Space Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (Azercosmos), and Space Park X, the event saw participation of approximately 40 individuals from various medical disciplines. In his opening remarks, His Excellency Dr Mohamed Ebrahim Al-Aseeri, CEO of BSA, affirmed that this workshop serves as a platform for gaining advanced knowledge about the effects of space environments on human health, stressing its role in fostering national and regional capacities in vital and renewable space medicine. Dr Al-Aseeri noted that the workshop aligns with BSA's vision to promote scientific research and foster regional and international collaborations. He expressed optimism that the event would pave the way for innovative research and initiatives to address astronaut health challenges in non-terrestrial environments. He stated, 'We are proud to organise this unique workshop, which is the first of its kind in the Arab world, and hope it will lay the groundwork for further advances in space medicine.' His Excellency Dr Saad bin Saud Al Fuhaid, President of AGU, asserted that the workshop marks a strategic step integrating medicine and space sciences, highlighting the collaboration between the university, ICESCO, and BSA as a testament to scientific cooperation. Dr Al Fahaid reaffirmed the university's commitment to leadership in research and innovation and expressed hope that the workshop would offer valuable educational and practical opportunities to promote space medicine concepts and foster scientific partnerships that benefit the region and beyond. Scheduled from 25 to 27 May, 2025, the workshop will cover a range of topics, including physiological adaptation in space, the effects of microgravity and cosmic radiation, telemedicine, and advanced technologies to support astronaut health. It will feature distinguished international experts such as Dr Elshad Allahyarov and Dr Kenan Yousefzadeh, renowned for their pioneering work and extensive expertise in the field. The workshop has received accreditation from the National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA). Participants will be awarded two certificates: one jointly issued by BSA, AGU and ICESCO, and another from NHRA.

Dr. Mariam Athbi Al Jalahma, Chief Executive Officer of Government Hospitals, reaffirmed the institution's commitment to advancing healthcare services and optimizing available resources to support the health sector and serve the community. Her remarks came during a tour with editors-in-chief of local newspapers, aimed at highlighting key achievements of government hospitals in 2024. Dr. Al Jalahma praised the vital role played by the national press as an active member of Team Bahrain, emphasizing its contribution to showcasing national achievements across various sectors. She revealed that government hospitals have successfully implemented 80% of their self-management plan, a strategic initiative designed to enhance operational efficiency. Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) recorded an average bed occupancy rate of 80%, and 90% in intensive care units, reflecting the high operational capacity of these facilities. In the field of medical training and professional development, Dr. Al Jalahma reported that 46 doctors were sent abroad for specialized fellowship programs, while 304 doctors enrolled in various board certification programs. Additionally, 1,509 nurses received training across different nursing specialties, significantly boosting the competency of national medical staff. During 2024, government hospitals received over 1.2 million visits, including more than 400,000 visits to the emergency department at SMC and over 509,000 visits to outpatient clinics. Bahrainis accounted for 82% of the total patients served. The hospitals conducted more than 20.4 million laboratory tests and over 316,000 radiology exams throughout the year. In addition, 22,944 surgical operations and 7,670 childbirth cases were recorded, highlighting the institutions' critical role in providing daily healthcare services. To expand service capacity, 56 additional beds were made operational, along with specialized units such as a short-stay unit for women with sickle cell anemia and a biological treatment unit. A dedicated psychiatric emergency wing was also introduced, signaling a move toward more specialized and integrated health services. Government hospitals earned several national and international accreditations in 2024. Notably, SMC was designated as an official examination center for the UK's Royal College of Physicians fellowship exams. The institution also secured Australian accreditation, ISO certification for its laboratory, and national accreditation from the National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA) with a platinum rating. Additionally, it received institutional accreditation from the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties and won three patient safety awards from the Arab Hospitals Federation. As part of Bahrain's initiative to modernize 500 government services, 23 new e-services were launched. These included services related to sick leave documentation, medical report requests, appointment changes, and remote consultation clinics at correctional and rehabilitation centers. On the performance improvement front, 145 development projects were implemented, 47 key performance indicators (KPIs) were monitored, and advanced mechanisms for risk management and clinical auditing were introduced. The hospitals also inaugurated a strategic planning and project management department, along with a digital dashboard to track KPIs—steps aimed at bolstering institutional efficiency and oversight. These advancements underscore the continued evolution of government healthcare in Bahrain, reinforcing its commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care aligned with national development goals.
