SMTA, KFC sign MoU to provide scooter training to women
He emphasized that the Pakistan Peoples' Party (PPP) has always advocated for women's rights. He highlighted that Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto took historic initiatives such as establishing the First Women's Bank, setting up Women's Police Stations, and distributing land to landless women farmers.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA) and the renowned international food chain KFC at a local hotel in Karachi. The MoU was signed by SMTA Managing Director Kamal Hakim Dayo and KFC CEO Raza Pirbhai. Sindh Senior Minister for Transport Sharjeel Inam Memon, Secretary Transport Asad Zamin, and other senior officials were present at the ceremony.
Under the agreement, the Sindh government, in collaboration with KFC, will establish training centers in all divisional headquarters across Sindh to provide scooter driving training for women.
Addressing the ceremony, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon stated that President Asif Ali Zardari launched the country's largest income support program, which provided financial assistance to millions of women. He added that during the PPP's tenure, women were issued national identity cards and granted the right to vote. He stated that Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari pledged to rebuild two million houses destroyed in the recent floods, with ownership rights being granted to women. He noted that this initiative represents the world's largest housing project.
Sharjeel Memon said that the Pink Bus was Pakistan's first women-only public transport project, which received praise from international media. He added that the government has now decided to provide free Pink EV Scooties to women to help them become more independent.
He stated that so far, 8,000 women have applied for free scooters, out of which 140 already hold driving licenses. KFC has offered to provide driving training for women and cover their license fees.
Raza Pirbhai added that the training will be conducted at divisional headquarters.
Sharjeel Memon stated that the bidding process for this project will be transparent, and scooters will be distributed purely on merit. He added that the Sindh government will soon launch a Pink Taxi Service, and more buses, including double-decker buses, are expected to arrive in Pakistan next month.
Sharjeel Memon said that the Sindh government has also introduced Pakistan's first electric buses. He added that the country has recently overcome a major challenge, and now it is time for all of us to work together to move the nation forward.
On the occasion, KFC CEO Raza Pirbhai hosted a reception in honour of the distinguished guests and expressed pride in being part of this important initiative to empower women in collaboration with the Sindh government. He stated that KFC is committed to not only creating employment opportunities for women but also ensuring they are given the full right to lead a dignified life.

Tribal elders, MPs unanimously reject KP military operation
PESHAWAR: Tribal elders and elected public representatives from tribal districts Bajaur and Mohmand have unanimously rejected any proposals for military operations or displacements, stating such actions were unacceptable. The Jirga held comprehensive deliberations on the prevailing law and order situation and unanimously put forward several key recommendations. The participants stressed their firm commitment to peace, stating that they want peace and call upon the government to ensure it. We are ready to fully cooperate. Terrorism is the enemy of all, and we stand united against it. Participants viewed the initiative of local Jirgas as a positive step and called for it to be made more effective so that its outcomes could benefit other regions as well. Deadline for Ajrak number plates extended
KARACHI: The Sindh government has announced to extend the deadline for acquisition of motorbike and car number plates embedded with security features. The new deadline has been set for October 31, giving vehicle owners additional time beyond the earlier deadline of August 14. The decision was made following directives from Pakistan Peoples' Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. Sindh Minister for Excise, Taxation, and Narcotics Control Mukesh Kumar Chawla confirmed the extension after a meeting with the PPP chairman at Bilawal House on Monday. During the meeting, Mukesh Kumar Chawla briefed Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on the performance and attendance of PPP members in the Sindh Assembly. He highlighted the achievements of the Excise and Narcotics Department, particularly the seizure of narcotics worth a record Rs7 billion. Punjab honours 1,700 martyred policemen
Ceremonies were held across Punjab on Monday to mark Police Martyrs' Day, honouring over 1,700 Punjab Police personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty. "I salute those brave soldiers of Punjab Police who made Pakistan a cradle of peace by giving their blood," said Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. "Some mothers lost their sons, some wives lost their husbands and some kids lost their fathers so that we all could be safe," said in her message on Police Martyrs' Day. She said, "Blood of police martyrs is the strongest brick of our state. Real strength of a state are those soldiers who face bullets but do not step back." The central event took place at Alhamra Arts Council, Lahore, where Punjab Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman, Inspector General of Police Dr Usman Anwar, CCPO Lahore Bilal Siddique Kamyana, and families of martyred officers gathered alongside representatives from the media, civil society, showbiz, and academia. Speaking at the event, IG Punjab Dr. Usman Anwar said, "Punjab Police made sacrifices on 353 out of 365 days last year - a reflection of our commitment to peace." He noted that more than 712 families of martyrs (prior to 2017) had received residential plots and financial support, with enhanced measures introduced under the direction of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. As part of welfare initiatives, 26 children of martyred officers received laptops for educational support, and residential plot documents were distributed to families of pre-2017 martyrs.
