BBC MasterChef winner 'feels awful' for John Torode as complaint left her 'gobsmacked'

Daily Mirror2 hours ago
John Torode was sacked from MasterChef earlier this month after an allegation of racism was upheld against him, while his co-host Gregg Wallace was also axed from the BBC show
Former MasterChef champion Thomasina Miers has revealed she "feels awful" following John Torode's dismissal from the BBC cooking programme as the complaint against him left her "gobsmacked".

Since being selected to co-present the revamped MasterChef in 2005, John Torode and Gregg Wallace developed into one of British television's most recognisable partnerships.

Their partnership was torn apart in recent weeks after 45 complaints were sustained against Wallace, including one for "unwelcome physical contact" and three involving a state of undress.

Shortly after Wallace's downfall, co-star Torode faced a single racism allegation which was upheld, resulting in his departure. Torode has vehemently rejected the racism claim and has voiced his shock and sadness.
During an appearance on the Spooning with Mark Wogan podcast, Thomasina reflected on her experience on the programme. Speaking about the allegation against Torode, she revealed: "I felt awful for John. I mean, and also the elegance of his response to it, how he conducted himself."

She continued: "I think, yeah, I was kind of gobsmacked by John (the news of the allegation being upheld), who was so caring and intent on the people under his watch, under his care."
Thomasina claimed victory in the first series of the relaunched MasterChef in 2005. Twelve months after her triumph, she launched her own restaurant empire, establishing the beloved Mexican-inspired street food chain Wahaca, which now operates 14 locations across the UK.

Thomasina isn't the only famous face to show their support for Torode after the racism claim emerged.
Both Amanda Holden and McFly's Danny Jones showed their backing by liking the ex-MasterChef presenter's Instagram post from July 14, where he acknowledged being the person at the centre of the "racial language" allegations.
A BBC spokesman issued a statement declaring: "John Torode has identified himself as having an upheld allegation of using racist language against him.

"This allegation – which involves an extremely offensive racist term being used in the workplace – was investigated and substantiated by the independent investigation led by the law firm Lewis Silkin. John Torode denies the allegation.
"He has stated he has no recollection of the alleged incident and does not believe that it happened. He also says that any racial language is wholly unacceptable in any environment.
"The BBC takes this upheld finding extremely seriously. We will not tolerate racist language of any kind and, as we have already said, we told Banijay UK, the makers of MasterChef, that action must be taken. John Torode's contract on MasterChef will not be renewed."
The opening three instalments of the current MasterChef series - showcasing Torode and Wallace prior to their dismissals - landed on iPlayer yesterday morning (Wednesday, August 6).
The episodes seem to have been trimmed to feature reduced jokes between the duo and less interaction with the amateur cooks than viewers typically expect.

'Skint' Josie Gibson resorts to 'moving back into a caravan' after This Morning star's home renovation leaves her 'sleepless and with stress through the roof'

has revealed that she's resorted to 'moving back into a caravan' after the This Morning star's home renovation left her 'sleepless and with stress through the roof'. The This Morning presenter, 40, appeared on Thursday's episode of the ITV show to chat with Ed Balls, 58, and Ranvir Singh, 47, about a breast cancer campaign that she is involved in. But before they spoke about that, they mentioned her brand new show Josie Gibson's Big Country Build, which is on our screens later this year. They shared a sneak peek of what to expect, and a clip of Josie of her saying: 'Have I sat down and worked out the financials? 'No. No... and I am quite skint now, actually.' When they returned to the live studio, Josie could be heard laughing out loud and she said: 'You always think you're really cool until you watch yourself on TV and you think "Oh my God - is that what I sound like!?"' Josie said: 'Have I sat down and worked out the financials? No. No... and I am quite skint now, actually' Ranvir pointed out that Josie used to live in a caravan before all this, and now she's got an enormous house. The former Strictly star dubbed the host: 'You are a great British success story!' Josie confessed: 'Well... I've moved back into a caravan. I don't know about that!' Ed was keen to find out what the programme is about. Josie explained: 'So my dream Ed, was to always build an eco house off grid as possible. Myself.' She continued: 'I've roped my family in. So they say never work with family and animals... and I've just done that. To say my stress levels are up here is to say the least.' Talking about her loved ones, Josie said: 'They are great. They are amazing. But there is a lot of challenges let's say.' Ranvir asked: 'Has it put relationships under strain?' 'I would say so,' Josie replied while nodding. As well as transforming her home she is also taking part in Breast Cancer Now and Tombola's 'Eyes Down, Check Up' campaign. They want people to regularly check their breasts and also raise £1m. On Thursday she went down to Westfield Stratford and joined nurses to chat about breast cancer. 'When you're sat down with your mates, let's make it part of the conversation, let's make it a normal thing,' Josie told the presenters. Josie's new show was announced last month. The seven-part series has allowed for cameras to follow her journey of transforming her huge Somerset property into a modern pad. Josie will be joined by her rarely-seen family members brothers Josh and Charlie, who are scrap metal traders, as well as her builder cousin Tom. Not only that, she's keen to follow a sustainable life style, so the camera crew will follow her growing her own produce and installing an underground heat pump for bees. ITV's press release states: 'The extensive renovation will be followed every step of the way as Josie attempts to assemble her dream home, complete with an on-site gym, walk-in wardrobe, and blacked out windows. 'And as she adapts to new surroundings, Josie will be building lots of new friendships with neighbours who could prove integral towards making her renovation dreams a reality.' Speaking about her new show, Josie said: 'My dream is to build a house as eco and luxurious as possible where you are immersed in the sanctuary of nature. 'I want to use the acres of land to try and my best to have a little small holding. I want bees, birds, badgers, to all live in harmony. 'Though, I'm becoming increasingly concerned that my harmonious dream is slowly turning into a construction nightmare..

Alan Sheehan says Swansea plan to build on buzz of Snoop Dogg becoming co-owner

The 53-year-old American rapper joined a growing list of celebrity investors in British football last month by becoming part of a Swansea ownership group that already included Croatia midfield great Luka Modric. Multi award-winning Snoop said Swansea's 'underdog' story 'really struck a chord with me' and his vast following on social media – 89 million on Instagram and 20.5 million on X – quickly learned about the Welsh club and his love for Joe's ice cream in the city. Swansea City is delighted to announce global rap superstar and multi-platinum selling artist @SnoopDogg has become the club's latest high-profile co-owner and investor. 👉 — Swansea City AFC (@SwansOfficial) July 17, 2025 'To have Snoop and Luka on board is a massive benefit,' Swansea boss Sheehan said ahead of Saturday's league opener at Middlesbrough. 'There is a buzz, obviously. As a football club you have to become more appealing commercially, to be more competitive, and appeal to the wider nation. 'It's different to how it was maybe when I was a player, but I understand why, and I totally welcome it. 'Rome wasn't built in a day, but there are big plans for the football club. 'It's about building strong foundations and building that character and resilience within the football club.' Comparisons with Wrexham, who are owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, are unavoidable and already being made. The two Welsh clubs are Championship rivals this season after Wrexham became the first team in the top five tiers of English football to win three successive promotions. A docu-series tracking life at Swansea, on similar lines to the award-winning FX show 'Welcome to Wrexham', is understood to be already in the pipeline. Asked if Swansea – who were relegated in 2018 after seven seasons in the Premier League – were the 'new' Wrexham, Sheehan said: 'No, we're Swansea. We're not new anything. 'Now they're in our division, I suppose, it becomes more there now (rivalry), but we don't play them until December. So I won't really be speaking about them until December.' Modric – who joined the board in April following a takeover led by American businessmen Brett Cravatt and Jason Cohen six months earlier – was unveiled as an AC Milan player on Monday after his trophy-littered 13-year spell at Real Madrid ended this summer. The 39-year-old has played his part in Sheehan's summer recruitment strategy, actively persuading players to join the Welsh club. 'Obviously, his transfer situation… he was unavailable to come here,' smiled Sheehan. 'We've had a few text messages and he's involved. 'Luka has spoke to some players, passed on his knowledge, what he knows about the football club, and the plans that we have for it. 'Snoop and Luka are very invested in the club. They care, they speak through the ownership and the ownership are very good to us.' So will Grammy-nominated Snoop soon be swapping California for Swansea to watch a game? 'I believe so,' said Sheehan. 'But I'm not sure which game yet. It would be very naive and narrow-minded to think two very successful people in what they do could not help us. 'Successful people have a lot in common – a work ethic, a grit, a determination to get where they want to get to. So with Snoop, Luka and the ownership there is a lot of positivity around the football club.'
