Sarawak High Court rejects Petronas bid to delay Petros suit

By: FMT Reporters Text Size: PETALING JAYA: The Sarawak High Court has dismissed two applications filed by national oil company Petronas to postpone or stay the hearing of a suit brought by Petroleum Sarawak Bhd, the state's sole gas aggregator. Judicial commissioner Faridz Gohim Abdullah rejected the applications and confirmed that the case will be heard on June 11, the Dayak Daily reported.
Advertisement Faridz ruled that no special circumstances had been presented to justify a stay or adjournment. 'The hearing of the case should not be further delayed,' he was quoted as saying. Petros is suing to restrain Petronas from utilising funds of RM7.95 million received under a bank guarantee previously given by Petros in respect of the supply of gas. Petros contends that Petronas's demand for payment under the bank guarantee was 'unconscionable' or 'unlawful'. In April, Faridz dismissed an application by Petronas to suspend all legal proceedings on grounds that Petronas had failed to show the existence of any sufficiently exceptional or compelling grounds to stay the proceedings. In October last year, Petronas had called on the bank guarantee after demanding payment of RM28,136,403.08 from Petros for gas supplied. Petros filed its suit against Petronas on Oct 15, 2024. The Sarawak state-owned oil company simultaneously sought an ex-parte interim injunction to restrain Petronas from pursuing the payment and receiving monies under the bank guarantee. However, Faridz ruled that Petros's injunction application had become 'redundant' as Maybank Islamic Bhd had already paid Petronas on the guarantee. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Why squeeze high Petronas dividend amid profit slump, Hamzah asks
Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin said a looming 10% jobs cut in Petronas could have been avoided if the government had adjusted the dividend amount. PETALING JAYA : Opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin has questioned the government's move to collect RM32 billion in dividends from Petronas, despite the company reporting a sharp decline in profits this year. Hamzah said the dividend payout for 2025 matches that of the previous year, even though Petronas recorded a 32% drop in profits in 2024, after a 21% decline in 2023. He said maintaining such a high payout raises questions about the government's fiscal priorities, especially as more than 5,000 Petronas employees (about 10% of its workforce) are expected to lose their jobs in a restructuring exercise. 'The government must clearly explain the rationale behind maintaining the RM32 billion dividend without taking into account Petronas's profit slump and the welfare of its employees. The rakyat deserves to know, is this what the government considers fair fiscal management?' he said in a statement. Hamzah said the layoffs could have been avoided if the government had adjusted the dividend amount in line with Petronas's financial performance, rather than pushing the company to deliver the same amount. Yesterday, Petronas announced plans to reduce its workforce and freeze hiring until December 2026 as part of a restructuring aimed at cutting costs amid falling crude prices. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today said most of those affected by the retrenchment are contract workers. In February, finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan said that Petronas's commitment to paying RM32 billion in dividends to the government remained unchanged. However, he said that the payout would depend on Petronas's financial performance and the outlook of the oil market. Separately, Bersatu vice-president Radzi Jidin reminded the government that the loss of jobs, whether of permanent staff or contract staff, would leave a big impact on them and their families. 'Humanity must always be at the heart of our actions,' Radzi said in a Facebook post.

Rental aid for Putra Heights gas explosion victims extended to next April
The explosion on April 1 sent flames more than 30m high, with temperatures reaching 1,000°C, and left a 9.8m-deep crater at the site. SHAH ALAM : The Selangor government will continue providing rental assistance to victims of the gas pipeline explosion at Putra Heights in Subang Jaya at least until April next year. State housing and culture committee chairman Borhan Aman Shah said the RM2,000 monthly rental assistance will ensure victims have appropriate shelter until their homes are repaired. 'Initially, the state government agreed to provide rental support for six months, but we have decided to extend it for up to a year or more, especially for homes that were completely destroyed, as rebuilding will take time,' he said in a statement today. 'For houses that were partially damaged, assistance will also continue until repairs are fully completed. 'The aid will only be discontinued once the occupants are able to return to their homes.' Borhan said the state government will monitor the progress of the repair to ensure efficient use of funds allocated for the assistance. On April 30, menteri besar Amirudin Shari announced that the Selangor government had allocated RM2.73 million in rental assistance to 455 families affected by the incident, covering six months from April. The Petronas gas pipeline fire on April 1 sent flames more than 30m high, with temperatures reaching 1,000°C. The blaze took nearly eight hours to extinguish and left a 9.8m-deep crater at the site.
