Festive hiring to jump 20-25% this year; top e-commerce firms to hire over 75,000 staff
The majority of these positions will be filled by temporary and gig workers, with a major e-commerce marketplace planning to recruit over 75,000 staff, as reported by Adecco India.
E-commerce and logistics sectors are spearheading the festive recruitment drive with an expected 30-35% increase in temporary staffing.
Retail, consumer goods, hospitality and tourism sectors are also expected to expand their seasonal workforce.
Electronics and mobile phone companies including Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Haier, and Godrej are preparing to increase their retail staff numbers, indicating positive sales expectations.
Randstad India projects gig positions to exceed 11 million this fiscal year, driven by e-commerce, retail, logistics, and quick commerce sectors. Quick-commerce recruitment is expected to rise by 35-40%, while e-commerce staffing shows a 25-30% increase, compared to approximately 10 million positions last fiscal year.
"We are anticipating a strong rebound in temporary staffing this festive season, with demand up 20–25% year-on-year as organisations work to recoup a softer summer sales period," Yeshab Giri, chief commercial officer at Randstad India told ET.
"The early arrival of key festivals has prompted companies to advance workforce planning, scaling up manpower well ahead of traditional timelines," Giri added.
The festive period represents India's peak consumption season, contributing 30-40% of annual sales in categories like apparel and electronics.
This year's festive season holds particular significance as demand has remained subdued for several quarters, with summer sales affected by rainfall.
Sales across electronic products, smartphones, apparel, fashion, FMCG products and automobiles have shown minimal growth in the past 4-6 quarters.
Deepesh Gupta, director and head of general staffing at Adecco India noted that companies are initiating recruitment earlier this year, expecting stronger festive demand from Raksha Bandhan through Diwali and Christmas.
"There's a strong emphasis on roles in customer service, delivery, warehousing, and digital support, especially as online shopping continues to grow," he said.
BNP Paribas India said in a July report that urban discretionary spending is likely to stay strong this fiscal year, helped by income tax cuts, lower loan rates, and easing food inflation.

‘Not going to rush': Ahead of Trump's tariff deadline, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent shares update; says ‘more concerned about…'
The US will not fast-track trade deals simply to meet deadlines, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said, signalling that the Trump administration remains focused on securing high-quality agreements even as a key tariff deadline approaches. In an interview with CNBC, Bessent stated, 'The Trump administration is more concerned with the quality of trade agreements rather than their timing. We're not going to rush for the sake of doing deals.' The remarks come ahead of the August 1 deadline, when tariffs on several US trade partners could kick in if talks fail to yield progress, according to an ET report. While describing the ongoing negotiations as 'moving along,' Bessent warned that failure to reach agreements could escalate trade tensions. 'If we boomerang on August 1 tariffs, higher tariffs could put more pressure on countries,' he said. Allies under pressure as US sticks to its terms Bessent pointed to growing engagement from the European Union, noting, 'They've become more engaged,' and said he expects Brussels may aim to speed up negotiations. 'I imagine they would want to negotiate faster,' he added. On Japan, Bessent clarified that Washington's focus remains firmly on securing the best outcomes for the US, not adapting to domestic political calendars in partner countries. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo 'Our priorities are not internal government but best deals for U.S.,' he said. Despite the approaching deadline, Bessent expressed confidence in the ongoing discussions. 'Trade is in a good place,' he said. Russia tariffs tied to political goals Touching on Russia, Bessent acknowledged that tariff measures can go beyond trade. 'Tariffs can be a means to political ends,' he said, referring to current conversations around sanctions. He also hinted at a possible joint strategy with allies, saying, 'Would urge Europe to follow us if we implement secondary tariffs,' without naming affected sectors or timelines. China discussions may restart, focus on overcapacity and oil On China, Bessent said talks could resume 'in the near future,' but flagged overcapacity as the primary concern. 'The elephant in the room with China is overcapacity,' he said, mentioning steel and solar as key pressure points. He also pointed to two new areas of concern that may enter future negotiations—Beijing's trade ties with Russia and its stance on Iranian oil. 'Could start talking about Iranian oil,' Bessent said, while adding that the US 'could discuss [China's] trade with Russia' as part of broader diplomatic talks. The company reported a 70% year-on-year rise in consolidated revenue to Rs 7,167 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2025, driven largely by the growth of its quick commerce vertical. The company posted a net profit of Rs 25 crore, down 90% from Rs 253 crore a year earlier, due to higher investments in Blinkit and other emerging verticals. Adjusted Ebitda declined 42% year-on-year to Rs 172 crore. Revenue from Blinkit more than doubled to Rs 2,400 crore during the quarter, while Zomato's food delivery business grew 16% to Rs 2,261 crore. Blinkit's net order value (NOV) rose 127% year-on-year to Rs 9,203 crore, slightly surpassing Zomato's Rs 8,967 crore. This is the first quarter where Blinkit has exceeded the company's core food delivery arm in order value, indicating a shift in strategic weight toward quick commerce. Adjusted Ebitda margin for the vertical improved to 5% of NOV, up from 3.9% in the year-ago period. Monthly transacting users rose to 22.9 million from 20.3 million last year, while average monthly transacting restaurant partners stood at around 2,38,000. Blinkit, which operates a network of over 500 dark stores, continues to be loss-making at the Ebitda level, reporting a loss of Rs 162 crore for the quarter, although this improved marginally from Rs 178 crore in the previous quarter. Eternal announced the incorporation of a new subsidiary, Blinkit Foods, to explore parallel commerce models including cooked food delivery. Hyperpure, the company's B2B supplies vertical for restaurants, generated Rs 2,295 crore in revenue, up 89% year-on-year. District, Eternal's going-out and ticketing vertical, saw revenue more than double to Rs 207 crore from Rs 95 crore in the same quarter last year. During the quarter, the company granted around 1 million stock options to employees under its Esop plans, valued at about Rs 26 crore. The company said it would continue to invest in growing Blinkit and Hyperpure, even as it keeps food delivery profitable and cash-generating.
