Arizona governor approves up to $500M to upgrade Diamondbacks home
The team said it will also contribute $250 million for the renovations at the stadium, which is located in downtown Phoenix and is surrounded by small businesses and restaurants that see a boost of activity during the baseball season.
The legislation is one of a handful of bipartisan deals that Hobbs, a Democrat, prioritized negotiating during the session. She says the funding is a responsible use of taxpayer dollars, will provide good-paying jobs and ensure the Diamondbacks do not leave Phoenix.
Attendance at games has increased since the team's 2023 run to the World Series, where the Diamondbacks lost to the Texas Rangers. This season they are averaging 31,420 fans per game — the highest in two decades.
'I'm not going to let Arizona lose the Diamondbacks,' Hobbs said Friday on the social platform X.
Derrick Hall, president and CEO of the Diamondbacks, praised the governor and said the team will now turn its attention to extending its lease with Maricopa County.

DENVER (AP) — This was a cool moment for Warming Bernabel — being doused with an icy bucket of water. Not that long ago, winning moments like this were few and far between for the Colorado Rockies. That winning feeling, though, has returned a little more often in the second half of the season. The Rockies rallied to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 on Monday night courtesy of Bernabel's walk-off single in the ninth inning. With that, the Rockies snapped a 10-game skid against the Dodgers. They also tied their season-high winning streak of four games. Even more, they're 14-15 since the All-Star break, while the NL West-leading Dodgers are 13-15. Colorado still trails the defending World Series champions by 35 games in the standings. No longer are the Rockies in imminent danger of setting a modern-era major league mark for losses, though. At 36-89, Colorado needs to win six of its final 37 games to steer clear of the dubious record set by the 2024 Chicago White Sox, who finished 41-121. 'We're at this stage right now where we're trying to get better as a team,' All-Star catcher Hunter Goodman said. 'We're trying to play the game the right way and do things to put us in a position in the future to get to the spot that some of these teams we're playing against are in.' Colorado has won five series since the All-Star break. That after winning just two series before the break. 'You definitely see flashes,' Goodman said. 'We're a super-young team. But getting that learning experience and figuring out how to win at this level and how to do it together as a team has been pretty cool to watch the last month or so.' The last time Colorado beat the Dodgers was Sept. 21. It's been a little longer since the Rockies last beat Los Angeles at Coors Field — June 19, 2024, to be precise. 'It's good to get a win. 'We're going to get their best. We're prepared for that,' Roberts said before the game. 'But yeah, absolutely, teams try to kind of use us as a marker. We see that.' In the ninth inning, the Dodgers were playing their outfielders deep to prevent a double. It ended up costing them one. PHOENIX (AP) — Brayan Rocchio hit a two-run homer, rookie C.J. Kayfus had a solo shot and the Cleveland Guardians beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1 on Monday night. Gavin Williams (8-4) threw 5 1/3 scoreless innings, giving up four hits and a walk while striking out five. It was another good outing for the 26-year-old, who took a no-hitter into the ninth against the New York Mets on Aug. 6 before giving up a solo homer to Juan Soto. The D-backs cut their deficit to 3-1 with two outs in the ninth when Geraldo Perdomo hit an RBI triple that got past a diving Nolan Jones in right field. Cade Smith struck out All-Star Ketel Marte for his seventh save. The Guardians snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 64-60, three games out of an American League wild-card spot. The Diamondbacks have dropped four straight. Arizona starter Zac Gallen (9-13) gave up three runs and five hits over six innings, striking out three. Rocchio connected for his third homer of the season in the fifth, turning on Gallen's knuckle curve and sending it over the right-field fence for a 3-0 advantage. D-backs All-Star Ketel Marte apologizes for absence following All-Star break
PHOENIX (AP) — Ketel Marte is having one of the best seasons of his career on the field. That hasn't stopped a fair amount of criticism for the Arizona Diamondbacks slugger off of it. The All-Star second baseman apologized through an interpreter Monday for missing three games following the All-Star break after flying back to his home in the Dominican Republic — a situation that has apparently been festering in the clubhouse over the past month. The 31-year-old said he initially expected to return to Phoenix immediately following the break but was 'frustrated' and 'in a bad spot' after he learned his residence in Scottsdale, Arizona, had been burglarized during the break, according to the interpreter. The D-backs were playing a crucial stretch of games — fighting for playoff position ahead of the July 31 trade deadline. Arizona placed Marte on the restricted list for the first two games of his absence and then didn't play a third game after he returned to the club. 'I know there's an elephant in the room and I'll just say what I want to say about it,' D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. 'I know that Ketel talked to you guys and I'm proud of him for doing that. That's not easy for him to do. I know he showed some vulnerability and I'm really proud of him for digging in the way that he did.' The manager continued: 'What I'll say about Ketel are the things that I know — he's a great teammate, he's a great young man, he plays hard every single day for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
