Arab Cybersecurity Governance and Policy Committee Discusses a Number of Regional Initiatives
INA- SOURCES
The Arab Cybersecurity Governance and Policy Committee, operating under the Council of Arab Cybersecurity Ministers, convened today, Tuesday, to discuss a number of regional initiatives.
In a statement followed by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the committee announced that it had held its meeting under the chairmanship of the United Arab Emirates, with the participation of representatives from relevant cybersecurity agencies across Arab states, the General Secretariat of the Council of Arab Cybersecurity Ministers, and the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States. The meeting addressed a number of initiatives proposed by member states for the first regular session of the Council.
The committee reviewed the proposed Cybersecurity Terminology Glossary initiative, the committee's upcoming work plan, and the Policies and Governance Program, which includes a set of cybersecurity policies, frameworks, and standards designed to confront emerging cyber threats across the Arab region.
It was further noted that the Governance and Cybersecurity Policy Committee, established pursuant to a resolution of the Council of Arab Cybersecurity Ministers during its first regular session held in Riyadh in 2024, is responsible for proposing unified Arab policies, legislation, regulations, systems, and standards related to cybersecurity. The committee also undertakes the preparation of studies, research, strategies, initiatives, and projects, as well as the review of international cybersecurity policy developments that may impact regulatory frameworks in Arab countries.
It is worth noting that the Council of Arab Cybersecurity Ministers consists of the Arab ministers responsible for cybersecurity. Its charter was ratified by a resolution of the Council of the League of Arab States at the summit level. Operating under the umbrella of the League, the Council is tasked with formulating public policies, setting strategies and priorities for advancing joint Arab efforts in the field of cybersecurity, and addressing cybersecurity issues and developments across the security, economic, developmental, and legislative domains. It also approves joint Arab action plans to implement the Council's adopted policies and strategies.

US Veto stalls UN Gaza ceasefire bid
Shafaq News/ On Wednesday, the United States vetoed a draft resolution in the UN Security Council calling for an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, along with unimpeded humanitarian access to the territory. It marks the first use of veto power during US President Donald Trump's second term in office, and the Council's first vote on the Gaza file since November when the United States blocked a previous call for a ceasefire. The draft also highlighted what it described as the 'catastrophic humanitarian situation' in Gaza. Backed by 14 other Security Council members, the resolution also pressed for the 'immediate and unconditional lifting of all restrictions on the entry and distribution of humanitarian aid to Gaza,' demanding safe, wide-scale, and unobstructed delivery, including through UN channels. U.S. Deputy Ambassador Dorothy Shea justified her country's vote against the draft resolution, describing it as 'biased' and noting that it 'fails to condemn Hamas or demand that it disarm and leave Gaza.' She also invoked 'Israel's right to defend itself' and claimed the resolution undermines ongoing negotiation efforts. British Ambassador Barbara Woodward voiced her country's support for the resolution, stating, 'The unbearable situation in Gaza must end. We are determined to see an end to this war, the release of hostages held by Hamas, and relief for the catastrophic humanitarian situation facing Palestinians in Gaza.' The last resolution adopted by the Council dates back to June 2024, when members backed a US-proposed multi-phase ceasefire plan involving the release of Israeli detainees in Gaza. That ceasefire only took effect in January 2025.

MOE signs contract for 600 MW power line between Iraq and Turkey
Baghdad – INA Minister of Electricity Ziyad Ali Fadhil sponsored the signing of a contract with the Turkish company Alifrin on Wednesday to double the capacity of the Iraq-Turkey power line from 300 to 600 MW. The ministry said in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "Minister of Electricity Ziyad Ali Fadhil sponsored the signing of a contract with the Turkish company Alifrin to double the capacity of the Iraq-Turkey power line from 300 to 600 MW." It added, "The new contract includes equipping the national system with 300 MW as a first phase via the Jazara-Kask 400 kV interconnection line in Nineveh Governorate, with the line's capacity to be increased to 600 MW within less than one month." It indicated that "the ministry's companies have already completed all technical requirements for the interconnection, including the necessary stations and lines, in addition to fulfilling all contractual obligations." The ministry explained that "this project will directly contribute to increasing the hours of supply to the northern regions. The Iraq-Turkey interconnection line also offers numerous strategic advantages, most notably linking the Iraqi grid to the European energy grid, of which Turkey is a prominent member." She noted that "one of the important aspects of this contract is that its provisions stipulate supply according to the "Take and Pay" system, which means payment for the amount consumed, which provides economic flexibility for Iraq and ensures optimal use of imported energy without financial waste." The ministry also added explained that "this project is part of the Ministry of Electricity's strategy within the government's program to diversify energy sources and reduce dependence on a single source, as well as opening new horizons for cooperation with neighboring countries and the European Union."
