Motorists urged to reclaim vehicles from Ekurhuleni pound before auction

IOL News15-05-2025

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department is appealing to motorists who have had their vehicles impounded to come forward and reclaim them before they are auctioned off.
From May 15 to June 16, 2025, the EMPD will be available to assist owners in claiming their vehicles from the pound. The collection hours are set from 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.
The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) is urging vehicle owners who have had their vehicles impounded to act swiftly, as they have a limited window to reclaim their property.
Those who do not reclaim their vehicles within the specified dates risk losing them permanently, as unclaimed vehicles will be put up for public auction.
This action falls in accordance with Regulation 320(4) of the National Traffic Act (NRTA) 93 of 1996, which stipulates how proceeds from such auctions are to be managed," the EMPD said.
In a public statement, an EMPD spokesperson noted, 'We understand that many people rely heavily on their vehicles for daily commuting and work purposes. We urge all owners to come forward and reclaim their vehicles to avoid the unfortunate situation of losing them at auction.'

EMPD urges owners of impounded cars to reclaim their vehicles before they're sold

JOHANNESBURG - The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) is urging the owners of 178 impounded cars to come forward and reclaim their vehicles before they are sold. The EMPD said that the owners of the impounded vehicles had until 16 June to reclaim their cars. It said that after the date, all unclaimed cars would be auctioned off, with the proceeds going to the municipality's coffers. The EMPD has four impound facilities across the city. Each facility currently has over 30 vehicles, including motorbikes, caravans and trailers that were impounded by traffic officers for various violations. EMPD spokesperson Thabiso Makgato said the vehicles could not be kept in the impound facilities forever. "Failing to claim vehicles, they may be sold in the form of a public auction and proceeds derived from this auction be dealt with as prescribed by regulation 320 (4) of the National Traffic Act R.T.A. of 1996." Makgato said that the vehicle owners would still be expected to pay the release fee of R2,290 and the storage fee, calculated at R170 per day.

SANRAL distances itself from viral speed limit message

SANRAL distances itself from viral speed limit message The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) has firmly denied involvement in a widely circulated message falsely claiming it will implement stricter speed limits on South Africa's national road network from 1 July. The viral communique, designed to look official, claims SANRAL is introducing sweeping changes to speed limits across urban, rural, and highway roads under the so-called 'SANRAL Highway Law.' However, SANRAL has dismissed the message as fake and misleading. 'SANRAL has a distinct mandate to manage the country's national road network. This mandate encompasses the financing, planning, development, improvement, maintenance, and rehabilitation of the national roads, as prescribed by the SANRAL Act of 1998,' said Vusi Mona, SANRAL's general manager for communication and marketing. 'The SANRAL mandate does not include any enforcement rights—be that related to speed, safety, or security.' According to the false document, new speed limits were to include: Urban roads reduced from 60 km/h to 50 km/h Rural roads adjusted from 100 km/h to 80 km/h Highways capped at 110 km/h (down from 120 km/h) Heavy vehicles restricted to 90 km/h on all roads School zones set to a strict 30 km/h during school hours Also read: Speed limit and penalties explained after EMPD busts taxi driver Mona warned the public not to be misled by unofficial sources and urged vigilance when receiving road-related updates. 'We encourage members of the public to contact SANRAL's hotline at 0800 204 508 or email sanral@ if they come across suspicious information,' he said.
