Florida football leads the recruiting battle for this 4-star defensive lineman
Four-star Parker (Birmingham, Alabama) defensive lineman Vodney Cleveland was one of the many recruits in Gainesville this weekend for the Orange and Blue Game, and he left The Swamp with Florida on top of his list, according to On3 Gators Online.
'I would probably say Florida is No. 1,' Cleveland said to Gators Online. 'Actually being able to get there to kind of get a game-day experience and seeing the guys compete against each other and work stood out."
Cleveland already thinks highly of several Florida defensive linemen. He mentioned Micah Boireau, Caleb Banks and D'antre Robinson by name, and he's forming a connection with several members of the staff. D-line coach Gerald Chatman is naturally a big part of his recruitment, but running backs coach Jabbar Juluke is also stepping up. He enjoyed the game day atmosphere in The Swamp and so did his parents.
Official visit coming up
This was Cleveland's third visit to Florida, and he already knows when he'll be back. Cleveland has penciled in the weekend of May 30 for an official visit, one of six he has on his schedule. Auburn, Georgia, Miami, North Carolina and Texas are the others.
Auburn is probably the biggest competition for Florida right now, but the cycle doesn't end for another 8-10 months. Those official visits could loom large when Cleveland makes his decision.

Is Myles Garrett's absence from Browns OTAs meaningless or a problem?

We have hit the portion of the NFL offseason that can often lead to frustration for fans and media: Voluntary OTAs. The Cleveland Browns started their first OTA session on Tuesday following Memorial Day. In between voluntary activities is a mandatory minicamp where players are subject to fines if they decide to skip. Currently, the Browns do not seem to have any player with a contract dispute (unlike down in Cincinnati and other places) so, barring excused absences, the whole team should be in attendance starting on June 10th. Advertisement The most notable absence from the first session of voluntary (there is that word again) OTA is DE Myles Garrett. Fresh off an offseason where he demanded a trade before signing a huge contract extension, Cleveland's star defender is taking in the sights and, seemingly, house hunting in Japan (via his Instagram Story): In general, fans expect players to give their all to the sport and their team. Given Garrett's huge new contract, those expectations are even greater. All in all, Garrett's absence is mostly meaningless. Early offseason activities are focused on simple installs of formations and teaching techniques. Garrett, and other veterans not in attendance, have little need for those things, which allows coaches to spend more time with the new and younger players. Advertisement Where attendance can be helpful is for positions that require as much timing work as possible. Quarterbacks and receivers can use the repetitions to get a better connection, as can offensive linemen in learning to work together. While it can be helpful, teams can be very successful without having everyone in attendance at voluntary activities. If Cleveland struggles in 2025, it will have nothing to do with Garrett being in Japan. Are the optics potentially problematic given his offseason complaints? Sure, but all that matters are things that directly impact performance on the field. Missing voluntary activities are unlikely to do so. Fans will always want more from the highest-paid players on a team and, especially, after Garrett's offseason trade request. Could it help his leadership role, his teammates' buy-in and fans' opinions if he were at every activity? Most certainly. Will it have any kind of significant impact on the results of the 2025 season? Unlikely. Unfortunately, there is no way to prove one way or the other. We know our DBN community is passionate and smart about football, do you think Garrett's absence is meaningless or a significant concern for the Browns this year? ‘Who Am I Sitting Next To?': NFL Star Travis Hunter Wins Hearts With Humble Airport Encounter

Travis Hunter, the Jacksonville Jaguars' No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, is making headlines for all the right reasons after a heartwarming interaction with a fellow passenger on a recent United Airlines flight. The former Colorado star and Heisman Trophy winner left a lasting impression on Sandy Hawkins Combs, who had no idea she was sitting next to a future NFL sensation until other passengers began approaching him. Combs shared her experience in a Facebook post that quickly went viral, praising Hunter for his exceptional manners and down-to-earth personality. The young athlete offered to help her with her bag, addressed her as 'ma'am,' and engaged in pleasant conversation throughout the flight. What stood out most to Combs wasn't Hunter's athletic achievements but his genuine humility and respectful demeanor, qualities that have endeared him to fans. This chance meeting between Hunter and Combs happened as she was flying home from Denver. Travis Hunter Shows MVP-Worthy Manners On Flight 'Anyone would be proud to have him as a son or grandson – so polite,' Combs wrote in her viral Facebook post. It wasn't until fellow passengers began approaching Hunter for photos that Combs realized her seatmate was someone special. 'I turned and asked him, 'Who am I sitting next to?' I looked at his Jaguar pants, smiled, and asked, 'Are you an athlete?' He smiled and said, 'I'm Travis. Yes, I was drafted by the Jags.' I already told my sons I want his jersey,' she recounted. Advertisement Hunter's impression on Combs extended beyond their brief encounter. She expressed her newfound support for the Jacksonville Jaguars, writing, 'He's so humble and down-to-earth—I would have never guessed he was a professional athlete. JACKSONVILLE JAGS, you did good! I will be buying tickets.' The Jacksonville Jaguars invested heavily to secure Hunter in the draft, trading up for the No. 2 pick by parting with the No. 5 overall pick, No. 36, No. 126, and a 2026 first-round pick. Florida softball's first-year standout named NFCA Freshman of the Year

Florida softball outfielder Taylor Shumaker was named the NFCA Freshman of the Year, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced Tuesday night at the 2025 NCAA Women's College World Series banquet in Oklahoma City. The first-year standout was honored with the award based on a unanimous decision, making her the second-ever Gator to win it. The other to achieve the same accolade was outfielder Amanda Lorenz in 2016. Advertisement Shumaker is batting .389 and leads the team with 22 home runs, 72 runs scored, 17 doubles, and an .818 slugging percentage heading into the Women's College World Series; her 86 RBI so far this spring are tied for the best mark in the NCAA. She has also drawn 40 walks and is 18-for-19 in stolen base attempts. The outfielder from Fullerton, California, is currently tied for the Florida single-season record in both home runs and RBI. The NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year award was created in 2014 to honor outstanding athletic achievement among Division I freshmen softball student-athletes.
