CHOOSING a partner who reciprocates effort is essential in building a healthy, balanced relationship.
Unfortunately, one woman learned this the hard way after investing emotionally and financially in her ex-boyfriend—only to be met with indifference.
In a Threads post, she said that in the early stages of her relationship with her former boyfriend — who had been a widower for 10 years — she eagerly looked forward to celebrating his birthday, especially after he told her that no one had celebrated it in years.
According to the post, the woman claimed she spent RM1,800 on his birthday celebration. However, when her own birthday came around, she didn't even receive a birthday wish.
Initially, she thought it was strange and assumed he was planning a surprise. She waited for three weeks, but he gave no indication of remembering or celebrating her birthday.
'My birthday passed without any celebration. I only had a piece of roti canai and drank some teh tarik—and not even with the person I thought would be my future husband,' she said.
As the relationship progressed, tensions rose after the couple argued over the lack of birthday acknowledgement. Her ex claimed he had simply forgotten, which made her realise she could not live with such a calculative partner—especially when it came to food.
She explained that she was usually the one who paid whenever they dined at more expensive places she had suggested.
'Every time we went out to eat, he would choose the place. Honestly, I was always afraid to order too much, even if we were just eating at a mamak stall. He would always order for me, and I'd just eat whatever he chose. I didn't mind, because I knew how stingy he was—especially with food, let alone anything else,' she added.
The relationship lasted for over a year. During that time, she said she had bought him many gifts, yet the only thing she ever received from him was a single packet of Thai tea.
Her story struck a chord with many online, with users expressing sympathy for her situation and applauding her for walking away from an unbalanced relationship.
'If this stingy man had become your husband, you would have suffered. Thank goodness you realised sooner,' one user commented.

Kind-hearted M'sian buys baby milk and diapers for struggling couple

A kind hearted Malaysian, lelaki_tersakiti84, has captured the hearts of thousands after sharing an unexpected encounter while withdrawing money at an ATM. He shared in a Threads post that he overheard a conversation between a husband and wife. With a heavy voice, the wife said to her husband: 'What should we do, my salary hasn't come in yet. The baby's milk and diapers are almost finished.' The husband stayed silent, started the motorcycle, and they rode off. Moments later, he bumped into the couple again at a convenience store. They were carefully choosing the smallest and cheapest packet of milk and a pack of diapers. At the counter, the wife even asked if diapers were sold individually to save costs, only to be told no. They then dug through their wallets for loose change to pay. 'I felt a jolt in my heart,' he wrote. 'I told them to put the small packet back and get the largest one instead, along with a month's supply of diapers. 'At first, they refused, but I insisted. I told them, 'I won't be poor from giving your child milk and diapers.'' The wife was moved to tears. He reassured her, saying he too had once struggled and understood how it felt to not have enough for the basics. Before leaving, the couple offered to repay him when they got their salary, but he declined, asking only for their prayers for his long life and to be able to raise his child. He even slipped them extra cash 'just in case.' His encounter has since left many Malaysian netizens in tears, thanking him for his kindness. 'No, I'm not crying, you are,' said @adrianajsmne. 'Thank you for sharing this story. I hope it inspires more people to give charity. May our good deeds help us in the afterlife. Amin,' commented @iznan_lil. 'When it comes to children, people in need, or elderly uncles and aunties working, my heart just becomes like tissue — easily moved,' said @srhmysrh.

Would you eat 'Reptile Egg' dessert? Here's the story behind Khanom Khai Hia!

BANGKOK: In Thailand, there's a dessert with a name that might raise a few eyebrows: Khanom Khai Hia, or the "monitor lizard egg dessert". Yes, you read that right! But before you judge, this quirky dessert actually has royal origins, and its history is tied to one of Thailand's most beloved kings, King Rama I. The story goes back to a time when the king, known for his refined taste, suddenly developed a craving for a unique dish, grilled monitor lizard eggs with mangosteen. Back then, such delicacies were considered a royal treat, but there was one problem: since it wasn't egg-laying season, finding the eggs was impossible. Enter Chao Chom Waen, a clever royal consort renowned for her culinary expertise. Not one to be defeated by a lack of ingredients, Chao Chom Waen had a brilliant idea. She used glutinous rice flour to create small "eggs," filling them with mung bean paste, a staple in many Thai sweets. These "eggs" were then deep-fried to a golden crisp and rolled in sugar and salt to mimic the savoury, rich flavour of the real monitor lizard eggs. The dish was served with the mangosteen the king had craved, and much to her delight, he loved it. Soon, this innovative dessert became a favourite at the royal court, and it was renamed Khanom Khai Hong, which translates to 'swan egg dessert.' The new name sounded more appetising. It became a hit, not only because of its delicious taste but also due to its fascinating backstory. While Khanom Khai Hia may sound unusual, the concept of combining sweet and savoury flavours is a hallmark of Thai cuisine. The sweet, crunchy exterior combined with the salty flavour gives the dessert a unique balance, making it a standout treat. It's a fantastic example of Thai innovation in the kitchen, born out of necessity but blossomed into tradition. Over the years, the dessert has evolved, but its roots in royal history remain intact. You can now find Khanom Khai Hia in various versions across Thailand, from traditional markets to upscale dessert shops. The name might be curious, but the taste is undeniably delicious, blending sweet, salty, and savoury elements that make Thai desserts so distinctive. The origins of Khanom Khai Hia offer a glimpse into Thailand's royal history and culinary creativity. While it may be rare to find monitor lizard eggs today, the dessert's legacy continues to thrive. So, if you're ever in Thailand, don't miss the opportunity to try this royal creation. Who knows? You might just find yourself craving those 'lizard eggs'! - The Nation/ANN
