Cooper Flagg breaks ACC record with 11th Rookie of the Week nomination
Duke basketball superstar Cooper Flagg has been a mainstay on the ACC's weekly award releases this season, and he was named the conference's Co-Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week on Monday for his efforts against Virginia and Illinois.
The latter nomination, Flagg's 11th ACC Rookie of the Week award in 2024-25, broke a conference record for the most times winning that honor in a single season. The old record of 10 stood since 1990 with Georgia Tech's Kenny Anderson, North Carolina Tar Heels star Tyler Hansbrough, and Duke's own Jabari Parker all tied at that mark.
Flagg put together a double-double in the first half against the Cavaliers, finishing with 17 points, 14 rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and two steals. He only played 23 minutes during Saturday's blowout of the Illini but still produced 16 points, seven rebounds, and five assists in that span, and he shot 13/26 (50%) from the field for the week.
The 18-year-old forward has been named the Player of the Week or Co-Player of the Week five different times now, two more than any other player in the ACC. He shared the honor with Boston College's Donald Hand Jr., the second time in four weeks that those two split the top conference billing.
Flagg, who has only missed out on Rookie of the Week honors five times this season, will have two more chances to add to his new ACC record.

NBA rumors: Star-studded 2026 draft class could fuel tank race
The post NBA rumors: Star-studded 2026 draft class could fuel tank race appeared first on ClutchPoints. Less than two months removed from the 2025 NBA Draft, front offices are turning their focus to next year's group of prospects. Cooper Flagg and Dylan Harper fueled a heated NBA tank race last season. Several highly touted prospects atop the 2026 class — including Kansas' Darryn Peterson and BYU's A.J. Dybansta — could have a similar effect on the 2025-26 campaign. 'NBA teams are excited for the 2026 draft class, creating an interesting subtext for rebuilding and tanking teams. Coupled with the perception that the 2027 draft is much weaker, there will be a lot at stake come lottery time in the spring,' wrote ESPN's Jeremy Woo. 'The headliners of the 2026 class are Kansas guard Darryn Peterson (ESPN's current No. 1 ranked prospect) and BYU wing A.J. Dybantsa, who NBA teams regard as the two strongest contenders at the top. 'I'd handicap Peterson as the slight frontrunner as he's considered one of the most dynamic scoring guard prospects to enter the college ranks in some time and built momentum with a strong high school senior season. Will Darryn Peterson, A.J. Dybantsa fuel another tank race this season? While much can change during the college season, the top of the 2026 draft class is drawing similar hype to Flagg and Harper. Darryn Peterson and A.J. Dybantsa appear to have an early lead atop the group. However, Boozer and Ament are also regarded as premier prospects. The strength of the 2026 class should lead to another closely monitored tank race this season. The Utah Jazz have the NBA's lowest projected win total at 18.5, while the Brooklyn Nets and Washington Wizards are tied for the second-lowest at 20.5. The NBA's flattened draft lottery odds — implemented to dissuade teams from tanking — have been a hot topic following this year's drawing. The Dallas Mavericks landed the No. 1 pick despite having a 1.7 percent chance. Meanwhile, the San Antonio Spurs jumped from the eighth-best odds to the second pick, while the teams with the top-three odds (Jazz, Wizards, Hornets) all dropped outside the top four. Yet, there's still value in finishing towards the bottom of the standings. The team with the NBA's worst record can fall no lower than the fifth pick, while the second-worst cannot fall lower than sixth, and so on. Big Ten Reportedly Proposing 24- or 28-Team College Football Playoff Format
An essential two-team College Football Playoff was exclusive. Making it four teams in 2014 added some flavor. Giving out 12 playoff berths in 2024 made it exciting. How about getting wild and having a 28-team CFP? Well, that's what the Big Ten has in mind. Conference commissioner Tony Petitti has formed proposals that would expand the CFP to 24, if not 28, teams, ESPN reported. The format proposal would eliminate conference championship games, while granting the Big Ten and the SEC seven automatic playoff bids apiece, with the ACC and Big 12 each getting five automatic bids. There would also be two automatic bids for non-power-conference schools and two other at-large teams. In all, there would be 20 CFP games on college campuses. Last season, college football debuted the 12-team CFP, which granted four conference title winners an automatic first-round bye and had four first-round playoff games played on college campuses. Neutral-site matchups began in the quarterfinal round. The Big Ten led the way with four teams in the CFP, followed by the SEC with three. [MORE: How 2024-25 CFP Would've Looked Under Proposed Expansion Formats] As for the 2025 season, the 12-team CFP format remains intact but with some tweaks, such as the top four overall ranked teams receiving a first-round bye as opposed to the top-four ranked conference champions receiving a bye (e.g. independent Notre Dame can get a first-round bye, whereas it previously couldn't because it's not part of a power-four conference). While still being one of the top-five ranked conference champions ensures a playoff berth, it no longer locks in a first-round bye for the top-four ranked conference winners. In the wake of each of the four teams that received first-round byes in last year's CFP losing in the quarterfinal round (Oregon, Georgia, Boise State and Clemson), there has been rampant speculation throughout this offseason about altering the format again; a potential 16-team format has been a topic of discussion. Last season, Ohio State defeated Notre Dame in the national championship tilt; both teams were at-large bids. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Washington basketball big man Hannes Steinbach named No. 3 international recruit
247Sports has updated its international basketball recruiting rankings to Washington's benefit. Big man Hannes Steinbach is now the third-highest composite-rated international recruit in the incoming class of 2025, behind guards Dame Sarr (Duke) and Neoklis Avdalas (Virginia Tech). Steinbach is now also the No. 68 recruit in the class, which boosts Washington's composite rank to No. 15 in the country. Steinbach has exploded onto the American basketball radar since debuting for Wurzburg in the Bundesliga in September 2024. He averaged 7.2 points and 5.8 rebounds in 31 regular season appearances, but stepped up when the lights got brighter. His averages jumped to 14.8 points and 10.4 rebounds per game in 10 postseason appearances. This summer, Steinbach also led Germany to a silver medal in the U19 World Championships, averaging 17.2 points and 14 rebounds a game and making the All-Tournament team. Steinbach and the Germans lost to now-fellow Husky JJ Mandaquit and the United States in the gold medal contest. Washington is now in the top 15 of both the composite prep and transfer ranks, according to 247Sports. Their prep class of Steinbach, Mandaquit, Jasir Rencher, Courtland Muldrew, and Mady Traore (from junior college) is No. 15. The transfer class of Desmond Claude and Wesley Yates III (USC), Christian Nitu (Florida State), Bryson Tucker (Indiana), Jacob Ognacevic (Lipscomb), Quimari Peterson (East Tennessee State), and Lathan Somerville (Rutgers) is ranked No. 13 in the country. Steinbach is expected to compete with Ognacevic, the reigning ASUN Player of the Year, for a starting job in the frontcourt this season. It's much more likely that the German will be a part of a potentially electric bench unit that could also include returning sophomore guard Zoom Diallo. Washington opens the basketball season with an exhibition against UNLV on October 19 before beginning the season in earnest with a showdown against Arkansas Pine Bluff on November 3.
