Punjab gives away Rs 3.4 crore in prize money under ‘Bill Liao Inam Pao' scheme

1 2 Chandigarh: Launched to encourage responsible consumer behaviour and strengthen tax compliance, the state's flagship 'Bill Liao Inam Pao' scheme witnessed enthusiastic public participation, with a total of 1,76,832 bills uploaded on the 'Mera Bill' app from its launch in Sept 2023 to July 2025, Punjab finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema said here on Sunday. "This surge in engagement resulted in 5,644 winners receiving prizes amounting to Rs 3.36 crore," he added. Cheema said the scheme's focus on encouraging citizens to demand bills had a profound impact on tax enforcement. "Penalties worth Rs 9.1 crore were levied on entities found guilty of irregularities in bill issuance. Of this, Rs 7.31 crore was already recovered, marking a significant step forward in ensuring fiscal accountability," Cheema added. He said the scheme expanded the tax base by facilitating 135 new registrations. The minister also shared details of the lucky draw for July 2025 held at the department's head office in Patiala on Aug 7. "The draw, which involved 6,345 bills uploaded on the app in July 2025, resulted in 257 winners being selected and collectively receiving Rs 15.3 lakh in prize money," he said, emphasising that the department promptly transfers the prize amount to winners' bank accounts upon receipt of the necessary details, including account numbers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Oldest Stars Who Are Still Alive And Often Forgotten Undo He clarified that bills pertaining to petroleum products (including crude oil, petrol, diesel, aviation turbine fuel, and natural gas), liquor, out-of-state purchases, and B2B transactions are excluded from the scheme's eligibility criteria. Trump's DOJ defends Obama-era policy to give work permits to spouses of H-1B migrants: Report

Trump DOJ defends policy to give work permits to the spouses of H-1B workers. Donald Trump's Department of Justice said in a court-ordered response that the Attorney General can give work permits to migrants even though Congress explicitly bars the hiring of illegal migrants, Breitbart reported. This response came in the context of a 2015 lawsuit, launched by American professionals against then-president Barack Obama's 2015 decision to provide work permits to the spouses of the H-1B workers Obama's deputies, at that time, defended that this helped companies to retain workers imported from India and other nations. In its legal brief submitted Friday, the Justice Department also said that American professionals should not be allowed to sue the government over the 2015 decision as they can't prove that they suffer direct economic harm from the additional foreign workers (the spouses of H-1Bs). What are H-1B, H-4 and H4EADs? Unpacking the 2015 case H-1B is the visa program that allows US companies to hire foreign skilled workers. H4 is the visa that the spouses of H-1B visa workers carry. In 2015, the Obama administration agreed with business requests to provide work permits to H4s, known as Employment Authorization Documents (EADs). This work permit for the spouses of H-1Bs is known as H4EADs. John Miano, a lawyer at the Center for Immigration Studies, is behind the lawsuit. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Mix 3 Kitchen Ingredients, Wake Up Thinner Every Morning Get Fit Today Click Here Undo The Supreme Court asked the Justice Department for its statement before deciding whether to take up Miano's lawsuit after it was denied by the DC appeals court. According to Miano, there are roughly 250,000 H4EAD workers in U.S. white-collar jobs and the vast majority are the wives of the Indian visa workers. Miano told Breitbard that the H4EAD program is especially bad because the spouses take lower-level jobs that would otherwise go to new American graduates. 'Do you know C++' Miano said in the 1990s when he was into programming, a New York bank wanted to hire him as a technology consultant but the route was through an Indian vendor who interviewed him for the role. Miano told Breitbart that he was asked whether he knew C++, he said yes but the bank later told him that the vendor who interviewed him said he did not know C++. "The Indian firm was 'hoping that by keeping me out, they might keep the next person out too, so that the bank's only choice would be to hire one of the Indians,' said Miano, sharing his personal experience.

Metro trial run in Thane likely in September and operations by December: Shinde

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Sunday said efforts were underway to conduct the trial run of the much-awaited Metro service in Thane next month, and its full-fledged operations are likely to begin by December this year. Once the project is completed, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) would enjoy seamless Metro connectivity, with last-mile and end-to-end commute solutions, Shinde told reporters after inaugurating the Thane Varsha Marathon. After that, we are working on launching the actual services by December. The work is progressing on a war-footing," he said. He also said the preliminary work on Thane's internal Metro network has begun. "This will be linked to the main Metro lines to provide integrated transport facilities," he added. Referring to broader infrastructure plans, the deputy CM said the freeway extension from Mumbai to Thane would ease traffic congestion and divert services to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) away from the city. Live Events Mandate has been given to the collector, municipal chief and police commissioner to make Thane traffic congestion-free, he said. "They are working towards it, and soon Thane city will be free from traffic jams," Shinde asserted. Highlighting the recent development works in Thane, Shinde mentioned the rejuvenation of Jogila Lake, which had been encroached upon by nearly 250 huts. "We have relocated the people who encroached the area and freed the lake. This is perhaps the first such project in the country where a lake has been completely restored and encroachments removed," he said. He also praised the patriotism of wrestler-turned-politician and Shiv Sena leader Chandrahar Patil as well as his team from Kolhapur, who have gone to the border areas of Jammu and Kashmir to donate blood for soldiers. "Their effort reflects true love for the nation," he remarked On the Thane Varsha Marathon, organised by the Thane Municipal Corporation in collaboration with several sports organisations after a long gap, Shinde said more than 25,000 participants joined the run, underscoring the city's enthusiasm for community events. Dharmendra of Pune ASI won the men's segment completing the 21-kilometre run in 01:07:41, while Ravina Gaikwad of Nashik triumphed in the women's section covering the same distance in 01:25:46. Both received Rs 1 lakh along with mementos, medals, and certificates. The event, with the slogan 'Marathon Thanechi, Urja Tarunaichi', returned after a five-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The marathon was spread across 12 categories, including a 'Corporate Run' for municipal officers, employees, public representatives, and journalists; special races for senior citizens above 60; and a spirited participation by the Divyang Tridal group. The total prize pool was Rs 10,38,900 was awarded.
