Jen Pawol to become first female umpire in MLB history

NEW YORK — Jen Pawol is set to become the first woman to umpire in Major League Baseball when she works games this weekend between the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves.
Pawol will work the bases during a doubleheader Saturday at Truist Park and the plate on Sunday, MLB told the Associated Press on Wednesday.
Pawol, a 48-year-old from New Jersey, worked spring training games in 2024 and this year.
MLB's move comes 28 years after the gender barrier for game officials was broken in the NBA, 10 years after it ended the NFL and three years after the men's soccer World Cup employed a female referee. The NHL still has not had a woman referee.
Pawol became the first woman in 2024 to umpire big league spring training games since Ria Cortesio in 2007. Cortesio spent nine years in the minor leagues, including the last five in the double-A Southern League, then was released after the 2007 season.
Pawol was an all-state softball and soccer player in New Jersey for three seasons in each sport at West Milford High. She went to Hofstra on a softball scholarship and became a three-time all-conference pick and was on the USA Baseball women's national team in 2001.
Pawol got a master's degree and was living in the Binghamton area of New York and taking teacher certification classes at Elmira College while still playing on the side.
'I wasn't really satisfied,' she said last year. 'Coming off of a huge competitive career, just playing locally, I wasn't getting my fix. And I remember looking at the umpire and being like, I think that's it. I got to go for that.'
After umpiring NCAA softball from 2010-16, she attended an MLB umpire tryout camp in 2015, was invited to the Umpire Training Academy at Vero Beach, Fla., and was offered a job in the Gulf Coast League in 2016.
Violet Palmer became the NBA's first woman referee when she worked Dallas' opener at Vancouver on Oct. 31, 1997, and Sarah Thomas was the NFL's first woman on-field official when she served as line judge for Kansas City's game at Houston on Sept. 13, 2015.
Stéphanie Frappart of France became the first woman to referee a men's World Cup game when she worked Germany's 4-2 group stage win over Costa Rica on Dec. 1, 2022, and Rebecca Walsh became the first to referee in England's Premier League when she officiated Burnley's 2-0 win at Fulham on Dec. 23, 2023.
MLB has 76 full-time staff umpires and uses fill-ins on crews for openings created by injuries and vacations.

Will the Vikings' season ride on JJ McCarthy?

Yahoo Sports senior NFL writer Frank Schwab and senior NFL reporter Charles Robinson discuss how Minnesota's chances of contending in 2025 will depend on how well their young quarterback fares this season. Hear the full conversation on 'Inside Coverage' - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript So much of the Vikings' season is riding on how quickly JJ McCarthy plays well. What did you see out of their young quarterback this camp and what amounts to what's going to be his rookie year? Well, I'll tell you what, you know, Justin Jefferson wasn't on the field when I was there, right? He was sitting out, obviously nursing, you know, an injury that he's been going through, and you know, Jordan Addison was the guy that, you know, JJ McCarthy was dialed in on in practice. Now we know that Jordan Addison's going to be suspended the first 3 games of the season. Not perfect in training camp in terms of having your best player out there for McCarthy to continue to work on chemistry with, knowing that you're going to take away a high-level #2 receiver the first 3 games, you know, of your season. So much of this though, just like it was last season with Sam Darnold, so much of this is going to be focused through JJ McCarthy. And I'll say this, like, I think they have not spared throwing a lot at him defensively with Brian Flores. I don't think they've pulled back the dogs in practice, OK? I think they have gone after him, and at times, I think, you know, people have looked at it and said, man, JJ looks like he's struggling a little bit. Man, he's a little bit of a roller coaster right now, in his preseason. We forget, it was at the beginning of his preseason last year, and then he went out in a couple of exhibition games that looked really, really good. And all of a sudden we're like, hmm, when I talked to Kevin O'Connell. He said, look, we're not, we're not trying to give him easy days. We're not trying to throw him softballs out there. We're not worried about his confidence. He's a very confident guy, confident kid. They feel like he's got natural leadership capabilities, and they haven't seen him break in practice. What are the expectations in their building really? Because I look at that team and I say, this roster is loaded, and if JJ McCarthy hits his ceiling and, fairly quickly, he's got to do that right away. I don't see why the Vikings can't be a Super Bowl contender. They really were last year. They went 14 and 3. I look at that roster, I'm like, this is one of the best rosters in the NFL. Am I wrong about that? Like, and how do they feel within the building about their expectations this year? No, I, I think you're, you're absolutely right. It's still one of the best rosters in the NFL, um, particularly, look, if it's healthy, it's clearly one of the best, um, offenses in the NFL from the skill position standpoint, um, but I don't want to say they have tempered expectations. I think they know we have a young quarterback, right? And, and there can be some growing pains as we go through turning JJ McCarthy into what we ultimately believe he can be. Close

Severity of Chargers OT Rashawn Slater's injury revealed

Chargers offensive tackle Rashawn Slater has been diagnosed with a ruptured patellar tendon. Slater is now out for the season and will require surgery. Slater will miss the 2025 season and be placed on Injured Reserve. He suffered the injury during Thursday's practice. The devastating injury comes weeks after Slater signed a four-year, $113 million extension that made him the highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL. The Chargers are likely to now turn to their Trey Pipkins III to fill in as the other starter opposite Joe Alt, who is capable of moving to left tackle. Pipkins, who was the starting right guard in 2024, started at tackle for most of his pro career before the move inside.

The Cincinnati Bengals and the Philadelphia Eagles will kick off their 2025 preseason at Lincoln Financial Field on Thursday. Cincinnati Bengals vs Philadelphia Eagles - NFL Preseason Week 1 Cincinnati Bengals vs Philadelphia Eagles - NFL Preseason Week 1 Coley Cleary How to Watch Bengals vs Eagles Date: Thursday, August 7, 2025 Time: 7:30 PM ET Channel: WXIX FOX19 (Cincinnati), NBC10 (Philadelphia), MyNetworkTV (KHII – Honolulu, HI) Stream: Fubo (TRY FOR FREE) The wait is finally over as the NFL preseason is officially here, and these two squads will continue their preparation for their opening games of the regular season during this matchup. We likely will not see many of the stars in action, as all of Jalen Hurts, Joe Burrow, and Ja'Marr Chase will almost certainly get the night off. However, there are still plenty of storylines to follow. For Cincinnati, first-round rookie defensive end Shemar Stewart could make his Bengals' debut. They desperately need some help on the defensive side of the ball, and Stewart could provide a boost to a unit that ranked near the bottom of the league last season. Philadelphia fans are still celebrating their Super Bowl title from last year, and this is the first time they can see some of the players in action since the Eagles raised the Lombardi Trophy last February. This is a great NFL matchup that you will not want to miss; make sure to tune in and catch all the action. This is not a nationally broadcast game, but it can still be live-streamed locally on WXIX FOX19 (Cincinnati), NBC10 (Philadelphia), and MyNetworkTV (KHII – Honolulu, HI). It will be aired via tape delay later on NFL Network. Live stream Bengals vs Eagles for free with Fubo: Start your subscription now! Regional restrictions may apply.
