Praise for Shubman Gill joining run-smiths Steve and Graeme with 700+ series runs vs England; shade on his captaincy decisions

Indian Express6 days ago
Besides showering plaudits on his run-making spree, the English media has also flagged a few captaincy blunders of Shubman Gill, while anointing him a perfect No 4 after Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar.
Here's what the media said:
BBC wrote:
'Gill now has 722 runs in this series with four centuries.
Only Graeme and Steve Smith, of South Africa and Australia, have scored more than 700 runs in a series against England in the UK this century.
Protea Smith was another young captain when he dominated the summer of 2003. His run-haul set him on the way to being one of the great leaders of the modern era, but he already looked a grizzled leader when taking the reins at 22.
Gill, in contrast, is softly spoken.
Where his first captain Kohli held court with an aura the size of his social media following, Gill answers questions with a disarming smile.'
Sky Sports wrote:
'The Indian captain's remarkable series lives on, Gill averaging 90.25 and with his tally for the four Tests now standing at 722, a new high mark for an Indian batter in a Test series against England – and with Sunil Gavaskar's all-time record of 774 in any series firmly in his sights as we head to The Oval.
A brilliant Stokes delivery did for him cheaply in the first innings, out lbw without offering a shot as the England skipper got one to jag back in sharply to the right-hander, while a rather more innocuous Archer delivery proved his undoing second time round, ending a magnificent rearguard of 103 off 238 deliveries that helped inspire India's series-saving draw.'
Guardian wrote:
'Gill has had a peculiar summer, extraordinary batting feats to go with the stresses of his new (captaincy) role. With his hundred, he joined Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar, the only other two captains to hit four tons in a series. Gill is the first to do so away from home. He began this series with the reputation of a white-ball virtuoso still waiting to master the red. He will head to its conclusion with more records in danger, confirmation that he belongs at No 4, continuing the great lineage. Before him, Virat Kohli, before him, Sachin.
His side have been particularly muddled in this Test. They welcomed back the No 3 dropped after the first Test and, once again, favoured a struggling seamer over the brilliance of Kuldeep Yadav, a wrist-spinner whose continued absence has hurt not only India but the spectacle of this series, too. Gill waited an age to introduce the drift of Washington Sundar in England's first innings, a wasted opportunity after the off-spinner's excellence at Lord's. This is still a side trying to work it all out after the departure of giants, Kohli to go with Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin in retirement.'

Harry Brook's ton draws Rishabh Pant comparison: Impactful and their bats go flying

Former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja praised England's Harry Brook for his fearless knock on Day 4 of the final Test against India at the Oval on Sunday, August 3. He compared the 26-year-old's approach to that of India's very own Rishabh Pant. Brook's 98-ball 111 in the second innings helped the hosts reach the brink of a win, thereby taking a 3-1 series on Sony Sports after the day's play, Jadeja highlighted the similar impact both Brook and Pant have had in pressure situations, pointing out how such players may not deliver every time but always leave their mark when they do.'Such players might not score runs every time, but when they score runs, they leave a massive impact. He reminded me of Rishabh Pant today. There was one thing common between him and Rishabh Pant. Both are impactful, and their bats go flying. Their styles are similar, so their mistakes and impact will also look similar,' Jadeja said. Brook came to the crease when England were under pressure and immediately took the attack to the Indian bowlers. His stroke-filled innings turned the tide of the match in England's favour, and Jadeja appreciated his aggressive mindset from the first ball.'At the start, he dominated and put the pressure that was on them back on the bowlers. Then, as soon as the atmosphere cooled slightly and they gained control, he kept playing in his own style, and his partnership with Joe Root left England on the threshold,' he and Root's batting partnership stand took England to 339/6 at stumps, needing just 35 more runs to clinch the match and the series. It wasn't just the runs that impressed Jadeja; it was also the way Brook played them.'Brook remains the same. He doesn't change his game. Washington Sundar left him standing halfway down the pitch in the last match. This is the thing with these players. They might not be as consistent as Joe Root every day, but a team needs them too. In difficult circumstances, only mavericks come in handy,' Jadeja also pointed out how Brook's unique scoring pattern made him stand out amongst modern batters. According to Jadeja, the Yorkshire batter has a distinct wagon wheel and often favours the leg side, while also stepping out against seamers and playing through the off side.'The pressure they faced in the last half an hour, if they had to play for half an hour like that when 250 runs were required, the bowlers would always have hope. He broke the bowlers' hopes in that half an hour, and then we kept waiting for the next two hours, as to what would happen now,' he Brook walks back after a stunning ton #SonySportsNetwork #ENGvIND #NayaIndia #DhaakadIndia #TeamIndia #ExtraaaInnings Sony Sports Network (@SonySportsNetwk) August 3, 2025Ironically, Brook's innings came to an end in a fashion that mirrored Pant while attempting a big shot, he lost grip of his bat and was caught by Mohammed Siraj at deep midwicket off Akash Deep's bowling. The dismissal brought back clear flashes of Pant's trademark risk-taking Brook's dismissal, England lost two more wickets in Jacob Bethell and Joe Root, giving India a slight opening ahead of Day 5. But Brook's sparkling hundred may have already done enough to swing the match in England's favour.- EndsMust Watch

‘India have failed in one place': Ravichandran Ashwin points out how defensive pressure building is lost art in modern game

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin while praising India for their performance in the ongoing Test series against England, also pointed out one place where the Shubman Gill side had failed in. India are currently looking to take 4 England wickets as the hosts need just 35 runs to win on Day 5. 'India have failed in one place. So much runs on this pitch but still India find themselves in this hole. This is because bowling to build pressure is a lost art. It's not only for India, many teams are struggling. Barring Australia, every other team struggles with this. This is called defensive pressure building. We are playing in an era of T20s where the everyone just talks about taking wickets. If you just go after wickets just like that, you will concede a lot of runs. Wickets actually falls when you build pressure and build rhythm,' Ashwin said on his YouTube show Ash Ki Baat. 'Prasidh Krishna got rhythm because Siraj bowled a maiden over and Prasidh got into a good rhythm, he was also bowling dots. We are not setting the right fields and bowling defensively at the right time. In this match also, we had a good session going into Lunch. The first 5 overs after lunch were extremely crucial. If you give 10 runs from those 5 overs, the pressure increases on the opponents. I am not saying you bowl defensive, wide outside off stump but Prasidh Krishna conceded 11 runs in the first over.' 'Offside there was a deep cover, he had 2 slips, he had a gully, he had a deep extra cover because the batter was stepping out and hitting it. He's got a 6-3 field: Offside has 6 and leg side had 3. I love Prasidh to bits but one bowler taking 5-6 wickets won't win you the game. As a bowling group, you need to build pressure. That is one area India have failed,' he added. India currently are 1-2 down in the 5-match Test series and will be aiming to defeat England in the 5th and final Test to tie the series.
