KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 (Bernama) -- The collective ASEAN gross domestic product (GDP) is projected to grow at 4.7 per cent in 2025 as compared to 4.2 per cent last year, said Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.
He said the 25th ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Council meeting today also forecast the inflation rate for the region at three per cent.
"There was a discussion and a presentation by the ASEAN Secretariat when we talked about the year 2024 and what our forecast is for the year 2025 in terms of GDP growth. There was also a discussion on what we expect the inflation rate to be.
"So today, the expectation is 4.7 per cent for 2025 for the ASEAN GDP growth and inflation around three per cent," he said in a press conference after the conclusion of the 25th AEC Council meeting on the sidelines of the 46th ASEAN Summit here today.
According to Tengku Zafrul, the projection is higher than average compared to the global growth rate and it is really driven by the strong export and public capital spending in larger economies.
"But the 4.7 per cent growth is subject to … there is a downside risk to that projection because of the external environment and such that we need to look at," he added.
Commenting on negotiations on the tariff issue, Tengku Zafrul noted that ASEAN member states have agreed on ASEAN neutrality and will continue to support the principle of multilateralism and the need for engagement between each country and the United States (US).
"Every country will have its position vis-à-vis the US, and we welcome the engagement that has been done bilaterally by ASEAN member states," he added.

PM expresses appreciation, applauds successful organisation of LIMA'25, ASEAN Summits

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed his heartfelt appreciation to all parties involved in the successful organisation of the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (LIMA'25) and the 46th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits last month. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, who is also MADANI Government spokesperson, said Anwar conveyed the appreciation message during today's Cabinet meeting, describing both events as historic milestones for Malaysia. 'The Prime Minister deeply values the efforts of all personnel and teams involved in organising LIMA'25 in Langkawi, as well as the ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Kuala Lumpur, at the end of May. 'Most heads of state and government leaders expressed their satisfaction with the warm hospitality and thorough preparations by Malaysia as the host,' Fahmi said at his weekly press conference. Fahmi said that the Prime Minister is currently considering appropriate forms of recognition to honour the dedication and commitment shown by all parties involved, with a formal announcement to be made in due course. 'Insya-Allah, several options are being considered, and we leave it to the Prime Minister to make the official announcement,' he said. LIMA'25 in Langkawi gathered 860 exhibitors from 24 countries, comprising 426 international and 434 local companies. Themed 'Today's Innovation, Tomorrow's Achievements', this year's edition was the largest maritime and aerospace exhibition in Southeast Asia since LIMA's inception in 1991. In Kuala Lumpur, apart from the 46th ASEAN Summit, two high-level meetings were also successfully held last month, namely the ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit and the first ASEAN-GCC-China Summit. The inaugural trilateral summit between ASEAN, GCC and China, which was also attended by Chinese Premier Li Qiang, not only marked a new chapter of strategic ties but also showcased Malaysia's commitment to enhancing regional economic cooperation. The GCC comprises Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Fahmi noted that the successful organisation of LIMA'25 and the 46th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits forms a strong foundation for Malaysia's hosting of the 47th ASEAN Summit in October under its 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability'.

He said the 600-acre project aligns with the government's strategy to enhance Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) as a regional logistics and aerospace centre. Loke said KLIA holds a unique strategic advantage, with a vast land area of 100 square kilometres and strong connectivity, making it an ideal location for such a development. 'We possess the ingredients and prerequisites unmatched by any other ASEAN country. KLIA has the potential to expand to five runways (beyond the existing three). 'There is no other airport in the region of this scale,' he said at a press conference following the groundbreaking ceremony for SAP earlier today. Located within the KLIA Aeropolis, SAP carries a gross development value of RM2.3 billion and will be executed in phases to ensure a well-structured, future-ready investment ecosystem. The project is expected to contribute RM55.2 billion annually to the aerospace industry and create over 32,000 high-income jobs by 2030. Elaborating further, Loke said Malaysia has also secured support from China to position KLIA as a regional cargo hub for the ASEAN market. 'China has agreed to support KLIA as its cargo gateway for the ASEAN region. This is a highly strategic and significant partnership.
