Buccaneers' Baker Mayfield Reveals Brutally Honest Take On QB Rankings

Buccaneers' Baker Mayfield Reveals Brutally Honest Take On QB Rankings originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
This offseason, we have seen Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield finally start to get the plaudits he deserves after two good seasons of football.
Entering the 2025 season as a dark horse Super Bowl contender and one of the NFC's stronger teams, the Buccaneers have seen quarterback Baker Mayfield consistently ranked among the league's top 10 quarterbacks—or just outside it—in various publications.
That is quite the tip of the cap to the former first overall pick, but if you thought he takes any stock in what those rankings are, you're sadly mistaken.
"I don't really think about them," Mayfield said. "Most of the people that vote on them haven't played the position at a high level or in the NFL. So, I just do my job. That's not a knock on the people that vote, but the rankings don't mean anything if you don't win games."
He isn't wrong.
The rankings mean nothing if you aren't winning football games, and in 2025, Tampa Bay and Baker are expected to win a lot.
Favorites for the NFC South (cue shocked face) and expected to not only make the playoffs, but go on a deep run given the offense that has been assembled and the defensive improvements, the Buccaneers have the tools to make this upcoming season a one to remember.
Of course, Mayfield is at the heart of that – and if he can play at a top 10 level, there's no telling how far the Buccaneers can go. But one thing is for certain, it will make Tampa Bay one of the most dangerous teams in football.

Super Bowl champion Saquon Barkley reminds former Philadelphia Eagles star of NFL legend

There's been a long track record of great Philadelphia Eagles running backs over the past few decades, but the Birds might have their best one yet since the arrival of Saquon Barkley. It's hard to argue with results after winning the Super Bowl during his first season with the team, and one former Eagles legend believes that Barkley has the potential to be an all-time great just like an NFL Hall of Famer. Brian Westbrook spent most of his career in Philly and was a fan favorite during the 2000's, and from his expertise the former rusher sees Barkley as a throwback style of player reminiscent of Bo Jackson. 'He's running away from people,' Westbrook said (via 'The only person that I've really come close to comparing this guy to is Bo Jackson. You remember Bo? He was just taking off and running away from people. That's what Saquon is doing.' While Jackson's NFL career was certainly short lived based on injuries and his simultaneous MLB tenure, he was considered one of the most physically gifted running backs ever. Barkley exemplifies a lot of similar traits, whether it's his breakaway speed, ability to break tackles or freakish athleticism like when he jumped over a Jacksonville Jaguars defender backwards last season. It's no wonder why Jalen Hurts and the Birds offense was humming in 2024, and many around the league expect Philadelphia to be just as good again this season. Tyrann Mathieu's New Orleans Saints jersey won't be reassigned just yet

The New Orleans Saints saw a local legend walk away when safety Tyrann Mathieu surprisingly retired earlier in July. Although they quickly signed another player at that position, they are not going to give his jersey number away immediately. It's notable given Derek Carr's No. 4 jersey was reassigned to cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry shortly after the quarterback's retirement. Mathieu sported No. 32 throughout his entire NFL career, including his three-year stint back home in New Orleans. Former Indianapolis Colts safety Julian Blackmon also wore No. 32 for the first five years of his pro career, but is currently using No. 28 with the Saints. The expectation is not that Mathieu will get his jersey retired or anything; it is just a nice gesture for a local legend. He played for just three seasons in black and gold, but his impact on New Orleans will always be far greater. He is from the city and serves as a great example of someone who made it all the way to the top. Mathieu may have an outside chance at the Pro Football Hall of Fame, however, which may be the best chance he gets honored by the Saints. He had 838 career tackles, 36 interceptions, three Pro Bowls, four All-Pro first team nods, a second team nod and won a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs. He is also one of the current generation's most famous football players, dating back to his college days, which won't hurt "the Honey Badger's" case. No matter the full reason that he did not get his jersey number taken immediately. Even if it did, it will be hard for fans not to associate that number with him for a long time to come.

Minnesota Vikings land a different CB in PFF's 2018 NFL re-draft

The NFL Draft remains the second-biggest event in the NFL calendar behind the Super Bowl. Like it or not, it also remains one of the biggest things that fans and media enjoy going back and analyzing to see "what could have been." Pro Football Focus has done a good job this offseason by starting a re-draft series that we have been tracking here on Vikings Wire. In their latest draft, they looked back on it, and it just so happens to be one of the more impactful ones in recent memory for the Minnesota Vikings franchise: The 2018 NFL Draft. The team drafted cornerback Mike Hughes in 2018, and while they stick with the position, they get a different player in Carlton Davis. The former Buccaneers and Lions cornerback has been around the league, but he has made plays every step of the way. Trevor Sikkema writes, "The Vikings needed some cornerback depth, and starters Trae Waynes and Xavier Rhodes were both gone in two years following the 2018 NFL Draft. Davis has endured his ups and downs but has posted a single-season PFF coverage grade above 70.0 in three of his seven campaigns, with some elite single-game figures." Davis would have provided a fun and versatile piece to Mike Zimmer's defense that would have helped out Harrison Smith in the secondary. However, just like every other re-draft, hindsight is 20-20.
