5-member drug gang busted; two Nigerians among arrested

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Anti-Narcotics Bureau (TGANB), in coordination with the Golconda police, arrested two Nigerian nationals and three Indian drug peddlers on Friday. Officials seized 20 grams of cocaine, 45 grams of MDMA, 20 grams of ecstasy pills, and `40,000 in cash from them. Police said Okoro Cosmos Ramsey, a Nigerian national, is involved in three NDPS cases in Hyderabad. Lakshmipathi is involved in eight cases across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Romi Bharat Kalyan in three cases in Hyderabad and Goa, Jafar Khan in two cases, and Chimezie Boniface Adikea in two NDPS cases. All five accused were previously lodged in Chanchalguda jail in the same barrack, where they became friends and exchanged phone numbers. After their release, Ramsey moved to Golconda, where Adikea later joined him. The duo began procuring cocaine and MDMA from a Mumbai-based supplier named James, and sold it to Lakshmipathi and other peddlers. Lakshmipathi frequently travels to Goa and Bengaluru with a friend, where he established contacts with several drug suppliers. He reportedly procured cocaine, MDMA and OG weed from persons, including Jack, Romi Bharat Kalyan, Mahesh, Susheel and Abdul Jafar Khan alias Sharukh. Jafar Khan also helped him procure MDMA from a person named Haleem in Bengaluru. Police said the five-member gang has been supplying drugs to more than 25 persons in Hyderabad.

Lost in translation: Witness statement in Hindi gets drug case accused acquitted

Chennai: A crucial narcotics case in Chennai fell apart after the prosecution submitted a key witness statement in Hindi — without any Tamil or English translation — leaving the court unable to understand the contents. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The court acquitted the accused, Nag Narayan Prasad from Kolkata, citing a lack of admissible evidence. The case began with the seizure of 4.6kg of hashish hidden inside 38 sheep-like toys in a courier parcel intercepted at Aramex, Ekkatuthangal, in March 2021. The parcel, booked under a West Bengal sender's name, was flagged as suspicious during X-ray screening. Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) officers confirmed the contraband using field test kits and collected samples before launching an investigation. The accused was arrested based solely on statements from Ranjith Singh, a courier operator in Chennai, and U Ismail of Dil Express who allegedly linked him to the consignment. However, Singh's statement, filed only in Hindi, had no translated version annexed. The judge, S Govindharajan, said this made it impossible "to come to the conclusion whether there is something available against the accused". Crucially, neither Singh nor Ismail was examined in court. The court also found that no contraband had been recovered from Prasad personally, and that his name appeared in no airway bill, manifest, or booking document. The prosecution relied heavily on a photograph-based identification without conducting an identification parade. Adding to the lapses, CCTV camera images from a Chennai hotel where the accused allegedly stayed were submitted without the mandatory digital certification under the Evidence Act. The court concluded that the case lacked a legal chain linking the accused to the drugs and held that the investigation had failed to prove his guilt beyond reasonable doubt. Prasad was acquitted, and the seized narcotics were ordered to be destroyed after appeal timelines lapse.

2 Nigerians, 3 others held with cocaine, MDMA in Golconda

Hyderabad: Five persons including two Nigerians were caught by TG Anti-Narcotics Bureau (TGANB) cops on Friday in Golconda. Police seized 20 grams of cocaine, 45 grams of MDMA and 20 grams of ecstasy from the accused. The two Nigerians – Okoro Cosmos Ramsey and Chimezie Boniface Adikea – and other three, Veerapalli Lakshmipathi, Romi Bharat Kalyani and Abdul Jafar Khan, were arrested during simultaneous searches at two different houses. All the five knew each other as they were lodged in the same barracks during their earlier prison stint in Chanchalguda jail. "After coming out of jail, Ramsey shifted to Vinayak Nagar, Golconda, and later Adikea joined him. They were procuring cocaine and MDMA from one James, a Mumbai resident, and selling it to Lakshmipathi and other peddlers," a TGANB official said Officials said Lakshmipathi was in Bangalore when he received a call from Cosmos that he had 20 grams of cocaine and 30 grams of MDMA. Lakshmipathi informed the other two in Hyderabad to buy the drugs for him by the time he returned to the city, the official said. Cops said they nabbed the men after coming to know of their presence in Golconda. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
