BREAKING NEWS NFL rocked as head of players' union Lloyd Howell Jr. resigns after string of controversies
'It's clear that my leadership has become a distraction to the important work the NFLPA advances every day,' Howell said in a statement.
'For this reason, I have informed the NFLPA Executive Committee that I am stepping down as Executive Director of the NFLPA and Chairman of the Board of NFL Players effective immediately. I hope this will allow the NFLPA to maintain its focus on its player members ahead of the upcoming season.
'I am proud of what we have been able to accomplish at the NFLPA over the past two years. I will be rooting for the players from the sidelines as loud as ever, and I know the NFLPA will continue to ensure that players remain firmly at the center of football's future.'
Last week, ESPN reported that Howell held a part-time role as a consultant for The Carlyle Group, one of a small handful of private equity firms that the NFL has approved to pursue minority ownership in franchises.
ESPN's reporting included a former lead outside counsel for the NFLPA, Jim Quinn, calling it 'an outrageous conflict for the head of a labor union to have an interest in a third party that is aligned with the NFL.'
It was not the first blow to Howell's reputation this offseason.
In June, the 'Pablo Torre Finds Out' podcast published an arbitrator's report from January, when the NFLPA and the league were at odds over potential collusion by team owners to tamp down the growth of quarterback contracts.
The arbitrator, Christopher Droney, ruled that there wasn't sufficient evidence of collusion between owners - but he went on to say that 'by a clear preponderance of the evidence,' commissioner Roger Goodell and the NFL's general counsel encouraged owners to restrict guaranteed money in player contracts.
Howell and the union reportedly had a confidentiality agreement with the NFL to keep the full report from getting out.
Howell briefed the players but didn't provide them copies of the report, according to ESPN.
Furthermore, Howell sits on the board of OneTeam Partners, a group licensing firm that is under investigation by the FBI.

Llamas, once Muir's protégé, has done well with younger viewers, occasionally his older rival in the key 25-54 year-old demographic twice since his start in June. That age group is particularly sought by advertisers because it tends to have higher disposable income. He has also continued to anchor his other show, NBC News Now's Top Story, where there has been virtually no turnover turnover since he started hosting in 2021, sources told Daily Mail. But Holt, a fixture in American households for more than a decade, was a major loss. Insiders told Breaker that Rafferty's move, similarly, stemmed from a desire to avoid the daily rat race of producing a show that requires a certain style of leadership. Llamas' style - at least compared to Holt's 'low-key and unassuming' style that the New York Times talked up in a profile penned in 2019 - has been difficult for some to digest. He's been in the hot seat for just eight weeks. Previously, before joining NBC News in 2021, he worked under Muir as a weekend host on World News Tonight. The show, once second-place to NBC Nightly News, is comfortably in first place with 7.272 million average total viewers as of the week of July 21, new Nielsen numbers show - much more than Llamas' 5.6 million. June was also ABC's biggest ratings win in three decades for the second quarter, continuing a trend of dominance started by Muir after he succeeded a then second-place Diane Sawyer. Llamas' strides against Muir, 51, with winning over younger viewers, however, unsettled ABC News bosses who regard Muir as the network's crown jewel, sources told Daily Mail last month. Llamas, 46, previously told The Washington Post of his desire 'to be number one.' 'It's not easy,' he said. 'But it's something I think we can do.'

US pending home sales fall more than expected in June
WASHINGTON, July 30 (Reuters) - Contracts to buy previously owned U.S. homes dropped more than expected in June, weighed down by higher mortgage rates. The National Association of Realtors said on Wednesday pending home sales, based on signed contracts, fell 0.8% last month. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast contracts, which become sales after a month or two, advancing 0.3%. Pending home sales decreased 2.8% from a year earlier. "The data shows a continuation of small declines in contract signings despite inventory in the market increasing," said Lawrence Yun, the NAR's chief economist.
