What is the ‘No DNA, just RSA' catchphrase that accompanies South Africa's sporting triumph

Indian Express7 hours ago

Social media ran with the 'No DNA, Just RSA' after it happily slid into success tales in South African sport. This weekend when Temba Bavuma lifted the World Test Championship mace, the catchphrase resurfaced alongside global glee for the freshly minted Test cricket world winners.
But it has acquired a cult and then a massy appeal, with a chuckle on the side, at most occasions where South Africans end up winners.
No DNA, Just RSA, loosely means that success doesn't hinge on genetics or what you are born with, but greatness is accessible to those that work hard and stay united. It has been riffed off for myriad occasions of African triumph (including a Miss Universe victory) emphasising that hard work and dedication in times of adversity, can make up for all that is naturally lacking – be it power or financial prowess.
It fell neatly into the triumph tale where rank underdogs South Africa beat mighty Australia for their first big WTC title. The hashtag popped up, though posters are expected to make their way when the Proteas are received home on Wednesday.
The term has hilarious but circuitous origins. According to iol.za.com, 'The term 'No DNA Just RSA' appears to have been derived from a claim that was allegedly made by former United States President Donald Trump in 2020 after giving a video update on his recovery when he contracted the coronavirus. Later it turned out to be untrue as the subtitles on the video were fake, this did not stop social media from running with it and that is how popular X user @Kay_Mahapa switched it up to 'No DNA just RSA'.
The doctored fake video had Trump claiming there was no blood running through his veins, 'No DNA, But USA.' There is no evidence of him saying such a thing.
However, South Africa (RSA) Twitter user Karabo Mahapa switched it up to say, 'No DNA, Just RSA'. iol.za claims that Mzansi (Saffer) teams ever since have had followers raise this banner, taking pride in their successes.
'Springbok fans, in particular, embraced the slogan during South Africa's Test match against the All Blacks at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town. Pictures of jubilant supporters captioned with the phrase flooded social media, cementing its status as a cultural phenomenon,' according to Pondoland Times.
It keeps surfacing at various venues when Laura Woolvaardt's women's team reached the cricket world cup final, when Bafana Bafana play, when the relay team medalled at Worlds andeven on social media when a pair of South Africans won sheep shearing world titles at the Golden Shear.
Olympics, Paralympics and Springboks games, and now Proteas, have seen this become a patriotic rallying cry to both fans and athletes, piggybacking Twitter trends.
'The phrase 'No DNA, just RSA' is a shorter, sharper version of 'Hulle weet nie wat ons weet nie' (They don't know what we know), which also reflects South Africa's unique history and the mindset of its people. It emphasizes the idea that South Africans are able to achieve great things despite facing challenges and not having the same inherent advantages as others,' according to Cricinfo.

Shedge to lead Mumbai's Emerging Team to U.K.

Promising all-rounder Suryansh Shedge will lead a 17-member Mumbai Emerging team on a four-week exposure tour to the United Kingdom, starting June 28. Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) secretary Abhay Hadap announced the squad and the tour fixtures while spelling out the objectives of the tour at a press conference on Monday. Shedge, who has all but cemented his place in the Ranji Trophy, will have three more teammates — Musheer Khan, Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Himanshu Singh — with Ranji caps for company for the five two-day and four one-day matches against various opponents. 'Most of the players have middle-class background, so it's a huge step by the MCA to organise the exposure trip,' Shedge said. 'I have always been a busy cricketer. I like to contribute with the bat, the ball and in the field. Captaincy has presented me with another aspect to remain involved in the game. I am looking forward to adapting in alien conditions and helping all my teammates to learn as much as we can in these nine games.' Besides competing and training at various venues, the team will also visit Lord's. Shedge, who will tour England for the first time, stressed all the players were excited to relish the experience, 'where we saw the World Test Championship final earlier in the week'. The squad: Suryansh Shedge (Capt.), Vedant Murkar (vice-capt.), Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Ayush Vartak, Ayush Zimare, Himanshu Singh, Manan Bhatt, Musheer Khan, Nikhil Giri, Pragnesh Kanpillewar, Pratik Yadav, Prem Devkar, Rishikesh Gore, Harsh Aghav, Harshal Jadhav. Harshit Rana To Stay Back In England? Report Makes Big Claim: "Speculation..."

Fast-bowling all-rounder Harshit Rana will stay back with the Indian Test team in England, it has been confirmed by sources to IANS. Rana was with the India 'A' team in England to play two four-day matches against the England Lions and an intra-squad game against the Test team in Beckenham. 'Yes, after a lot of speculation going around, it has now been confirmed that Rana will stay back with the Indian Test team. But it is yet to be known if he will be officially added to the Indian Test squad ahead of the series starting on June 20,' the sources, who are aware of the development, told IANS. It is understood that the members of India 'A' team who aren't in the main Test side or haven't landed a county deal yet might be on the flight back home on Tuesday. In England, Rana got his chance to play in the first game against England Lions at Canterbury, where he returned with 1-99 and made 16 runs. Rana made his Test debut on last year's tour of Australia, where he managed to pick just four wickets at an average of 50.75, with his best figures being 3-48 in Perth. He was not selected for the upcoming five-match series against England as the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee picked Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, and Prasidh Krishna to be in the fast-bowling department alongside Jaspreet Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. Overall, the New Delhi-based Rana averages 27.79 with the ball in 13 first-class cricket games, having taken 48 wickets. He also averages 32.80 with the bat, including hitting a century and two fifties. India, captained by Shubman Gill, are aiming to win a Test series in England for the first time since 2007. The five-match Test series, to be played at Headingley, Edgbaston, Lord's, Old Trafford, and The Oval, will also be India's first assignment in the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. --IANS

South Africa Return To Lords For More Celebrations After WTC Title Win

South Africa's victorious ICC World Test Championship (WTC) squad returned to the scene of their famous win on Monday when they descended on Lord's for more celebrations. The entire 15-player squad was on hand with the famous mace at the Home of Cricket, just two days after they completed a historic five-wicket win over Australia in the World Test Championship Final. The players and support staff were in good spirits as they came together for one last look at Lord's before they return to South Africa and all-rounder Wiaan Mulder said the celebrations had been spirited. "It's been a very, very good couple of days. Celebrations like I haven't had before, so as a team I think we're super chuffed and no better place to do it than at the Home of Cricket," Mulder told ICC Digital at Lord's. & View this post on Instagram A post shared by ICC (@icc) Mulder admitted he had hardly slept since arriving in London, with nerves leading into the Ultimate Test and the celebrations post-match still taking their toll. And while Mulder revealed all the players and support staff had joined in the frivolity, he said it was a group of players from Western Province that had led the way. "I think it's the Western Province crew, to be honest," Mulder said when asked who had been the best celebrators. "All of them celebrate victory very, very hard. Kyle Verreynne, Dane Paterson, David Bedingham and (batting coach) Ashwell Prince are kind of the leaders of our vibe team, so they have been the guys that have gone all out," he added. Notably, Mulder played alongside Australia captain Pat Cummins and star batter Travis Head at Sunrisers Hyderabad during the IPL 2025 and the 27-year-old said he enjoyed getting to know the pair during his brief stint with the franchise. "Heady is one of the top blokes around and Patty is also a great guy. I spent some time with them at the Sunrisers during the IPL and there was a lot of banter," Mulder said. "I trained a lot because I didn't play a lot in the IPL and I spent a lot of time facing Pat and facing Heady (in the nets), so there was a lot of banter coming into the WTC," he added.
