NBC Plans ‘Today' Fan Festival With Events Scheduled for Fall
Every weekday at about 8:30 a.m., the various anchors at NBC's 'Today' step outside the show's Manhattan news studio to meet briefly with fans. In just a few months, they will get to have a longer visit.
NBC News is planning a series of live 'Today' events, a sort of fan festival built around the program that will highlight many of its franchises, including Jenna Bush Hager's book recommendations, Willie Geist's in-depth celebrity interviews, and Hoda Kotb's wellness discussions. 'Today' has in recent months put a bigger spotlight on its food and recipe discussions and launched an app that spurs subscribers to think about fitness. The new concept would surface between October and early November, says Libby Leist, the NBC News executive vice president who oversees the morning franchise, and could include a series of ticketed events that would take place in New York City and a few other locations in the U.S.

In an era dominated by social media, says Leist, 'experiences are kind of a differentiator,' and can bring people together. 'There is so much fragmentation out there, and our thought is we have this trusted brand in 'Today,' and an ability to energize our fandom in real life.' NBC has sought ways to make the events affordable for different audiences, she adds.
'Today' is the latest NBCUniversal property to test experiential waters. The Bravo cable network has for several years organized a 'BravoCon' fan event, and MSNBC last year held a one-day conference that gave attendees a sneak peek at a coming documentary as well as several panels managed by or featuring the network's anchors and hosts. :'Today' has already dispatched Bush Hager to book events and had Geist interview interesting people like Ina Garten and Nate Bargatze at special events in front of live audiences. The concepts typically generate revenue from tickets, but also through advertising partnerships that weave specific brands and promotional messages throughout the occasion.
Like many other traditional media companies, NBCU is relying more heavily on programming that aims to gather large, live audiences. The NBC broadcast network will, next year, turn over two nights of its programming schedule to NBA telecasts as part of a new rights deal with the basketball league. NBCU will also telecast a new Winter Olympics in early 2026.
NBC executives felt this year, which doesn't have an Olympics or an election race, would have more room to focus on creating a 'Today' fan festival, says Leist. The aim, she adds, is to keep things going beyond a first year. 'The more we do it, the more we hope to generate interest.'
Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin, the two 'Today' news anchors, are likely to talk about the festival on air, says Leist, and may take part in a larger event tied to food.
Other news outlets have experimented with meet-the-viewer ideas. CNN mounted a series of live 'Citizen' events in recent years that convened newsmakers and CNN anchors to discuss major issues of the day. Among those who took part were Jimmy Kimmel, Dr. Anthony Fauci and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. Fox News Channel has organized its 'Patriot Awards' for the past few years; the event has even included a meet-and-greet and a whiskey tasting.
But the concept has not been tested in such force by a broadcast morning program, Leist believes, and the hope is the concept brings 'Today' closer to its viewers in an era when A.M. news remains critical to the economics of the broadcast-network news divisions. ABC's 'Good Morning America' continues to win more viewers overall, but NBC's 'Today' leads in the critical category of people between 25 and 54 — the audience favored most by advertisers in news programs.

For example, Brock Lee and Callie Flower, Abracadabra and Alacazam, and Canon and Crystal Ball. Looking at triplets, one person claimed to know a threesome named Lincoln, Mercedes and Bentley. Meanwhile, another chimed in saying they knew of a new mom and dad who got very flavorful with their name choice — especially the ones who named their child Frijoles Guacamole. 'On my life not joking. We secretly keep a bad baby name book to remind us of all the crazy first and middle names,' the nurse, who met the child with the delicious name, declared. One can only hope most of these are jokes waiting to be used in a prank call. Unlike countries like Iceland, which requires names to be pre-approved or New Zealand, which bans names like 'Justice' and '4Real,' the United States is basically the Wild West of baby naming. However, some states have banned certain wonky monikers. cites 11 names that have been made illegal by the courts, including King, Queen, Jesus Christ, III and Santa Claus. Fortunately, for the children of America, these wild names are still rare. The classic Liam and Olivia were announced as the top baby names for 2024 — the sixth year in a row.

Willie Geist compares daughter leaving for college to driving car with 3 wheels
Willie Geist is excited for his daughter's latest milestone — despite the terror involved. The 50-year-old host of 'Sunday Today' took to a TODAY Father's Day celebration on June 13 to open up about the mixed emotions he's feeling as his 18-year-old daughter, Lucie Joy, graduates high school. And that, of course, means getting used to being a family of three at home, rather than a family of four. 'We just had a high school graduation a few days ago for Lucie Geist,' Geist said to a panel of Today colleagues that included Craig Melvin, Al Roker, Carson Daly and Peter Alexander. 'All the best stuff is still coming,' Geist added. Geist goes on to admit that he and his wife, Christina, have 'done the best we can' with their daughter and are thrilled for her as she embarks on this next chapter of her life. 'It's a strange mix of genuine excitement for her because you know what's ahead, and then moments where you're driving around and the bottom drops out of your stomach,' he explained. 'And you go, 'I can't believe that we've gotten her to this point,' he added. Of course, Lucie leaving the nest comes at a price for Geist — like driving a car with three wheels. 'We're a family of four. Somebody's taken a tire off the car and you've got to figure out how to drive the car on three wheels, you know?' he told his colleagues. Peter Alexander was quick to offer some perspective on how special of a time this can be for his second child, who will be getting much more attention once Lucie leaves. 'I don't know how he feels about that, but we're excited about it,' Geist joked of George. Willie and Christina Geist first met in 6th grade and have been married since 2003. Geist shared the couple's origin story in an Instagram tribute for his wife's 50th birthday. 'She was 11 when she caught my eye on the first day of Mr. Kaplan's 6th Grade homeroom class. A gawky boy in Jams and Chuck Taylors can dream… but not this big,' he wrote. Now more than two decades later, the couple share two kids — daughter Lucie, born in 2007, and son George, born in 2009. While talking about his daughter's recent graduation, Geist clarified that Lucie will be moving several hours away when she goes off to college. Some parents might use that as a reason to track their child's location remotely — but not Geist. In fact, Geist admitted that he and his wife will be doing away with location-tracking software — despite currently using it — once their daughter leaves. Geist argued that tracking his daughter's location would cause more trouble than reassurance. His comments came just a few days after he first opened up about his daughter graduating while co-hosting 'Today with Jenna & Friends' with Jenna Bush Hager. 'As any parent who has been through this — or maybe you're going through it right now — knows, the excitement at times becomes terror,' he said on June 10. Geist admitted that the week leading up to her graduation was so full of activities that her big milestone didn't hit him until he saw her walking across the stage. 'She was on stage speaking, which was an amazing thrill, and I think that's when it really hit me and Christina,' Geist shared. 'All of a sudden, she's ready to go,' he added. 'And you hope you've instilled in her all the values and the habits and the things she'll need to go out in the world.'

Jenna Bush Hager made the cut — and viewers were not ready. Joined by The White Lotus star Leslie Bibb, the host of Today — as well many viewers of the HBO Max program — found themselves so taken by Bibb's now-viral blunt bob that she decided to take the plunge herself. The live Monday morning broadcast quickly turned into an impromptu hair appointment, with celebrity hairstylist Chris McMillan on hand to make the transformation official. 'When I was here back in March, Jenna vowed to get on board with the bob, and today is the day!' Bibb exclaimed with sheer enthusiasm. As the trio chatted, they reflected on how Bibb's hairstyle had unexpectedly gone 'completely viral' — a reaction McMillan admitted he 'didn't expect.' 'It was a grow-out of a short haircut,' he said. 'It wasn't like, the intention wasn't to give her a bob, it was to grow it out into a bob.' 'There are sometimes some bad damage, bad layers, and it sort of evens it up and creates a nice, strong perimeter.' With that, McMillan got to work, carefully finding the right length before committing to the first chop. 'Do I have enough hair to donate?' Bush Hager asked. 'No,' Bibb jokingly responded. Bush Hager shared that not everyone was thrilled with the prospect of her on-air makeover. 'I will say my daughter was like, 'Mom, don't do it! You're gonna regret it!'' she said. The video Bush Hager showed on Tuesday of her kids reacting to the cut makes it look like her daughter still wasn't convinced.
