Raiders' Smith and Crosby make obscene gestures toward Seahawks fans

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Geno Smith and defensive end Maxx Crosby were captured on videos making obscene gestures toward Seattle Seahawks fans as they entered the field before their preseason game Thursday night.
Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch was fined $10,128 for making a similar gesture to Green Bay Packers fans last November, according to Pro Football Talk.
Several videos of the actions by Smith and Crosby made the rounds on social media Friday.
One video showed the team gathered as it was ready to enter the field. Crosby is seen bouncing on his feet and appears to be talking to fans and tries to grab a sign. Then Smith joins Crosby in jumping up and down and looks in the direction of those fans. As the team begins to run onto the field, Smith makes an obscene gesture to the fans with Crosby immediately following with his own.
At least one fan appeared to be taunting the players before the gestures were made.
The then-Oakland Raiders drafted Russell first overall in 2007, but he went 7-18 as the starting quarterback played only three seasons.
Smith was the Seahawks' starter the past three seasons before failing to come to terms on a new deal. He followed his former coach, Pete Carroll, when the Raiders traded for him.
Thursday's game ended 23-23.

Ryan Blaney knocks off Shane van Gisbergen for pole at Watkins Glen

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) — Ryan Blaney bested Shane van Gisbergen in Cup Series road course qualifying by three hundredths of a second on Saturday, capturing the pole position at Watkins Glen International. Blaney turned a lap of 1 minute, 11.960 seconds in the No. 12 Ford, edging van Gisbergen's No. 88 Chevrolet (1 minute, 11.993 seconds). Starting first in Sunday's 110-lap race at Watkins Glen was a surprise for Blaney, who has only three top 10 finishes on the 2.45-mile track. The 2023 Cup champion is mired in a 22-race slump without a top-five finish on a road course. 'What a cool pole,' said Blaney, who earned the 150th Cup pole position for Team Penske. 'I'm a pretty average road racer, and I work really hard to get better at it and try to figure out ways to be better. We've got to find a little bit of race pace, but it's nice to have one-lap speed. It's fun when you can sit on the pole at a place where I'm not very good.' Bidding for his fourth consecutive Cup victory on a road or street course, van Gisbergen will start second after having won from the pole at Mexico City, Chicago and Sonoma. 'Man, it's amazing how close it all is for a road course,' van Gisbergen said. "My laps were OK, and there probably were some things I could have fixed. Decent start for tomorrow." Chase Briscoe, who had started on the pole position the past two weeks at Iowa Speedway and Indianapolis Motor Speedway, qualified third in the No. 19 Toyota, followed by Ross Chastain's No. 1 Chevrolet and Kyle Busch's No. 8 Chevrolet. ___

Haiti declares a 3-month state of emergency as gangs ravage country's central region

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Haiti's government announced Saturday that it is implementing a three-month state of emergency in the country's central region as gang violence surges. The measure will cover Haiti's West, Artibonite and Center departments 'to continue the fight against insecurity and respond to the agricultural and food crisis,' according to a government statement. The region — known as Haiti's rice basket — has been under attack in recent years, with gangs killing farmers or forcing them to abandon their fields as they raze nearby communities. The United Nations' human rights office noted that from October 2024 to the end of June 2025, more than 1,000 people have been killed, more than 200 injured and 620 kidnapped in the Artibonite and Central departments and nearby areas. Gang violence also has displaced more than 239,000 people in Haiti's central region, according to the U.N. In late April, dozens of people waded and swam across the country's largest river in a desperate attempt to flee gangs. On Friday, the government appointed a new interim director general to oversee Haiti's National Police, which is working with Kenyan police officers leading a U.N.-backed mission to help quell gang violence. André Jonas Vladimir Paraison replaces former police director general Normil Rameau, who was criticized for his struggle to contain violence perpetrated by gangs that control up to 90% of Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince. Rameau had repeatedly warned about the department's severe underfunding. Paraison previously served as head of security of Haiti's National Palace, and he was on duty as a police officer when former President Jovenel Moïse was killed at his private residence in July 2021. The changes come as Laurent Saint-Cyr, a wealthy businessman, takes over as president of Haiti's transitional presidential council, which is charged with holding elections by February 2026.

Mookie Betts gets brutally honest about his ugly 2025: ‘This season's over'

Mookie Betts, a superstar having a very un-superstar-like season, has taken a new approach to this forgettable year. 'This season's over,' Betts said Friday, according to The Athletic. 'My season's kind of over. We're going to have to chalk that up for not a great season.' It's a way of framing his frustration and starting over. Betts knows he's not going to have his typical numbers, not when he is sporting a .688 OPS in August, with just 12 homers and 51 RBIs. He's never finished a season with an OPS less than .803 and hit a career-high 39 home runs just two seasons ago. Advertisement Dodgers star Mookie Betts reacts in the dugout. AP 'But I can go out and help the boys win every night, do something, get an RBI, make a play, do something that — I'm going to have to shift my focus there,' the 32-year-old Betts said. 'Obviously everyone wants to have great seasons, but it's a lot easier when you just don't worry about the season. You just worry about game to game. I'll take this perspective for the rest of my career.' Manager Dave Roberts has remained in Betts' corner, hitting him near the top of the order despite his offensive woes. Advertisement An eight-time All-Star and Silver Slugger winner a year ago, Betts did have a strong game Friday night, going deep for the first time since July 5 in a 5-1 win over the AL East-leading Blue Jays. His three RBIs were his most since April 30. Mookie Betts and Teoscar Hernandez celebrating a home run. The Dodgers could certainly use a vintage Betts, with the Padres only three games behind them in the NL West.
