Britain's Got Talent has been a launchpad for opera sensations over its 18-year run, with Paul Potts and Susan Boyle being just two of the big names that found stardom on the ITV stage. Cast your minds back to 2012 when the teen opera duo Jonathan and Charlotte left audiences stunned, prompting a shocked reaction from Simon Cowell who blurted out "Seriously?".
At just 17 and 16 years old, the pair wowed the judges from the outset, delivering a powerful performance of 'The Prayer'. Ever the straight-talker, Simon suggested Jonathan might be better off going solo, hinting that Charlotte could hold him back.
Undeterred by the music tycoon's comments, the duo remained united, even reversing their name before heading into the nail-biting live finals on the unforgettable date of May 12, 2012.

Despite a remarkable journey, Jonathan and Charlotte ultimately finished as runners-up to winners Ashleigh and her dog Pudsey, sparking outrage among their ardent fans.
After coming second in a competition of 70,000 entrants, an ecstatic Charlotte was quoted by Wales Online saying, "Oh my God, we came second out of 70,000 people, it's incredible, it's been amazing", reports the Mirror.
Rumours were rife by the following morning that Simon Cowell was already in talks to sign Jonathan and Charlotte to his Syco label with a hefty £1 million record deal.

Come September 2012, the pair released their debut album 'Together', featuring Italian covers of songs from legendary artists such as Elton John, Muse, and Queen.
After dazzling Europe with their tours and churning out another hit, singing duo Jonathan and Charlotte reached a turning point in their career. In February 2014, they announced the end of their joint musical efforts when Sony Classical presented them with tantalising solo opportunities.
The duo shared an emotional note on their official website, looking back on their remarkable path since their first encounter at West Hatch High School in 2006: "We have had the most exciting journey together ever since meeting at West Hatch High School in 2006 and are so happy for each other."
They looked back fondly on their breakout as Britain's Got Talent finalists and chart-topping musicians: "To come second on BGT and sell over quarter of a million albums was beyond our wildest dreams."
Overflowing with enthusiasm, they revealed their individual paths, expressing deep appreciation for their fans: "To now be offered our own solo record deals by Sony Classical is the most exciting thing ever and we are thrilled to be going back into the recording studio so soon."
Above all, they showed gratitude towards those who've supported them throughout their journey: "For those that voted for us, bought our CDs and saw us in concert – thank you. We hope to see you soon at our own shows. Love Jonathan and Charlotte."
Charlotte is taking the musical theatre world by storm, having lit up the stage in "Carousel in Concert" at The Royal Festival Hall and being part of the original cast of "Heathers" in London's West End.
She recently won over TikTok users with a humorous video where she quipped about her resemblance to the famous Charlotte from 'Jonathan and Charlotte,' captioning it: "Simon Cowell hated me but then he got me Kurt Geiger's for xmas."
In the clip, she amusingly confirms her identity when people compare her to the well-known Charlotte, responding with a cheeky "probably because I am".
Charlotte's most recent gig was in Todrick Hall's latest hit "Midnight" which premiered earlier in April. She took to Instagram to share her excitement, saying: "This show has been one of the most fulfilling and rewarding shows I've ever worked on.
"I've laughed and cried every day, watched the most talented humans create, and been giddy to see what would happen each day."
Meanwhile, Jonathan is busy working on his new album following a global tour and continues to perform in his hometown of Essex.
Following their break-up, he soared to the top of the Classical Artist Album chart with his debut solo album, 'Tenore'. Grateful for the overwhelming support, he expressed his thanks on social media, saying: "Your kindness in allowing me to explore all kinds of music and your superlative taste in good tunes has led the way! !".
In recent times, Jonathon has captured attention with a stunning weight loss achievement, shedding five stone. Previously recognising a lack of self-control, he has shared: "I've still got a lot to lose but I'm making my way. I feel stronger and healthier than I have in 10 years, which is a lot."
He has also made it clear that this year marks a significant change in his outlook, claiming: "This year I've made an active choice. I've felt I've lacked the discipline a lot. When I was out in America it's fast food everywhere."
At the start of the year, he said he wasn't in the best place, but has since made strides in improvement: "I was in a terrible state in the start of the year and I've been able to claw my way back doing light exercise."
Reflecting on his past approach to life, he concluded with a burst of optimism: "For a long time I was just experiencing life, letting life live me, trying to find the next pleasure. Taking control of your own life, grabbing the world with your hands, feels amazing."

Amanda Holden 'goes naked' on radio after BGT dress Ofcom complaints

Amanda Holden took to the airwaves on Thursday morning alongside pal Jamie Theakston and appeared to be naked for their breakfast morning show on Heart FM Amanda Holden seemingly shunned any Ofcom complaints by appearing to be naked on air. The Britain's Got Talent judge's outfit on the ITV talent show's finale was criticised by some viewers, but she was clearly unfazed. She appears to have ignored any negative views - and looked to be completely nude on Heart FM's Breakfast Show's live stream. Her appearance even made her co-host Jamie Theakston do a double take. ‌ As she sat in her DJ chair on Thursday morning, she said on air: "Good morning, Mr Theakston. It is 6.30am and I've just caught myself on the camera and don't you think I look naked this morning? Sat behind here?" ‌ Jamie seemed to stumble in his response, replying: "Do you know what... You are wearing clothes, aren't you?" His comments amused his pal and co-host. She laughed as she said back: "I just looked and went, 'What? Have I forgotten to put my clothes on?'" The camera angle made it look like the 54-year-old had no clothes on, with only a chunky pearl necklace visible. She was, however, also wearing a pale pink strapless dress and was photographed outside of the London studios. As well as Amanda's BGT finale dress complaints following Saturday's show, fellow judge Alesha Dixon's attire was also criticised. The duo, alongside Simon Cowell and Bruno Tonioli, watched on as the public voted for magician Harry Moulding as their winner. In total, the female judges' outfits received 72 complaints to Ofcom. When contacted by the Mirror, Ofcom said they had received the complaints from viewers, who alleged the star's frocks were "too revealing for a family show". ‌ Amanda had stunned in her final outfit for the ITV talent competition after vowing to never tone down her fashion choices. It came after she had received a number of criticisms since the series started. She made sure to pull out all the stops for the star-studded finale, opting for a braless, plunging custom-made white silk gown from Saint Hendrix. She wore her hair slicked back into a bun with several bejewelled clips. ‌ Alesha meanwhile, turned heads in a sequin-strewn see-through jump suit, which revealed her underwear. It's far from the first time the pair's looks have been complained about on the show. In July 2017, Amanda wore a plunging see-through Julien Macdonald dress. It went on to be the most complained about TV moment of the year. The mum-of-two joked the incident was a 'national crisis' at the time. She teased in Closer magazine: "I'm always asked about the Ofcom complaints, but every outfit on the show is checked before I leave my dressing room, so I'm never worried. I think people should have fun with fashion!" She went on: "I had bits of fish wire underneath my breasts trying to hold that together... It's all quite laughable, but all everyone seems to talk about. It's been called another national crisis – but, oh no, I will not be covered up."

Why must I whisper so quietly about my love for Morrissey?

Yet, in a rush to "cancel" Morrissey, we risk discarding one of the most brilliant and idiosyncratic lyricists and vocalists of modern music – an artist whose contribution will arrive in history as more important than any polarising or contrarian statement he is so eager to express. Read more: Morrissey is not a politician or someone with any institutional power, so to hold him or any artist to the same standard is a strange allocation of moral righteousness. He is certainly saying the opposite of what I believe, some of which I find rather vile, but then I also realise that the personal opinion of an artist matters little in the grand scheme. That's not what he's here for, ultimately, and not what should be judged at the end of it all. The ability to judge art on its own terms further eludes us, and many are happy now to rewrite the narrative of Morrissey and his contributions. Detractors who cannot help but give The Smiths their due credit have no issue reducing the critical role he played in the group, as if doing so assuages the guilt of their enjoyment from any controversy of his they might not like. Johnny Marr, Morrissey, Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke of The Smiths (Image: Getty Images) 'I listen to The Smiths for Johnny Marr's guitar' is a sentence often banded about to distance the band and their significance from their main figurehead. With all due respect to the intricate, melodic guitar lines of Marr, the personality, substance and concept of the group was fully the brainchild of Morrissey. The emotional tilt? Morrissey. The artistic direction of faded soap opera actors, Warhol freaks and classic film stars that adorned the group's iconic covers and aesthetics? Morrissey, through and through. The mindset that informed the well-revered artistic impulses of The Smiths remains in his recent work, yet this turn towards right-wing controversy has tainted and perhaps blinded the perception of it. 'Spent the Day in Bed', a single from 2017, features the chorus refrain of 'Stop watching the news because the news contrives to frighten you, to make you feel small and alone', a sentence that would not be surprising loudly proclaimed from the mouth of Alex Jones. Yet it is the same kind of definitive cultural statement that could be seamlessly placed on The Queen Is Dead or any other beloved record, where its inclusion would not raise eyebrows at all. Read more: His past work, seemingly once perfectly understood at some point in time, sees unfair re-interpretation through his recent views. 'Bengali in Platforms', from his 1988 debut solo album Viva Hate, is a classic Morrissey character sketch of a Bengali boy struggling to fit in after immigrating to the UK. What was once a song that seemed highly empathetic to the plight of the outsider is now highlighted as an example of Morrissey's racism perpetuating through his art. But one wonders if those staking that claim have even bothered to listen to the song and have considered the slightest bit of nuance within it. 'He only wants to embrace your culture and to be your friend forever,' he sings, very unlike a man who would eventually sport a For Britain pin on his blazer. The contentious climactic line of its chorus, 'Shelve your Western plans and understand / because life is hard enough when you belong here', could very well be the artist extending sympathy to the further alienation that immigrant status creates for life in the UK, where the grass is not necessarily greener per se, and where moving in the world cannot fix the inherent contradictions, despair and loneliness of the human condition. Yet taken at face value, the song goes from a considered and nuanced portrait to just a flat confirmation of Morrissey's boorish proclamations. That is a shame. Read more: Morrissey is currently happy to play the provocative villain surrounded by pitchforks, something that he has always done in different ways, and it's obviously not helping his case. His record deal with Capitol Records ended in 2022, with an unreleased album called Bonfire of Teenagers stuck in purgatory while his former label holds onto the rights. Perhaps this is what being cancelled is, but to think someone like Morrissey can be in any way a victim in this scenario is hyperbole. He is a figure that can exist rather comfortably outside of the mainstream music industry, where he does not have to answer for any of his beliefs or opinions. Regardless, he is still the holder of quite an artistic legacy, and attempts to rewrite this will essentially be in vain once the cultural moments shift yet again.
