'Running' As A Super Serumed Character In The MCU Is Not For The Faint Of Heart, Confirms Captain America: Brave New World Star
Following his debut four years ago in the Disney+ subscription-exclusive series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Carl Lumbly's Isaiah Bradley returned for the 2025 movie release of Captain America: Brave New World. Unfortunately, the Korean War veteran enhanced with super soldier serum was made an unwitting pawn of Samuel Sterns' schemes, having been brainwashed into attempting to assassinate President Thaddeus Ross. While Isaiah is still in peak physical condition at such an advanced age thanks to the serum coursing through his veins, Lumbly informed me that the running aspect of his big action sequence took quite the toll on him from an emotional standpoint.
I had the pleasure of speaking with the actor on behalf of Captain America: Brave New World's Digital release, with the Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD rollout set for May 13. During our conversation, I asked him what the most difficult or challenging part of shooting the White House action sequence, and he started off telling me:
Running. That would be my simple answer. Because in many ways, and I'm not trying to be funny about this, he couldn't run fast enough even with super serum in his system. There's no way to outrun the reality that he's living in. So something about coming to and realizing that he had perpetrated something that he had no idea what he had done, but he knew that he was right back where he had been so often in his experience with this country. He was being accused of something that he did not do, he was accused of thinking things that he did not think, and he was locked away with himself once again, not knowing what his fate would be, having his life in the hands of other people.
Remember that Isaiah Bradley was thrown in prison for defying orders and going behind enemy lines to rescue some fellow Black super soldiers during the Korean War. He was experimented on by the US government and HYDRA for 30 years, and the only reason it wasn't longer was because a nurse faked his death and managed to smuggle him out. So for him to be thrown in prison yet again for actions he wasn't in control of was emotionally devastating. Like Carl Lumbly said, no amount of running was going to fix the horrible situation he'd been forced into.
The good news for Isaiah, however, was that he had Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson in his corner during Brave New World. As Lumbly laid out for me, the new Captain America's differing perspective on life compared to Isaiah's meant he had the drive to prove his friend's innocence, whereas Isaiah had resigned himself to spending the rest of his life in prison. As the actor put it:
It just happens that in this instance, his life is in the hands of the best person he could hope for, Sam Wilson, Captain America. And the world in which Sam operates is very different from the world in which Isaiah operated. Sam has agency and capabilities and assumptions and expectations that Isaiah has not dared have, but seeing that it's possible has to affect his thinking. So it's beyond the fact that Sam can save him. It's that Sam can operate in a world that looks completely like madness to Isaiah, but Sam can operate there. And maybe if Sam can, perhaps Isaiah can too.

As is often the case with these Marvel movies, good won out in the end. Sam Wilson, Joaquin Torres and their allies exposed Samuel Sterns' crimes, and after Ross' rampage as Red Hulk was stopped, Isaiah Bradley was freed. It's hard to say if we'll see Carl Lumbly reprise Isaiah in another upcoming Marvel movie or upcoming Marvel TV show, but I'd like to think that Sam's actions will indeed affect him and push him towards being more open with the world.
With Captain America: Brave New World out of the way, the next Marvel movie on the docket is Thunderbolts*, which arrives on May 2. One month later, you can see Carl Lumbly back on the big screen starring opposite Tom Hiddleston in Mike Flanagan's The Life of Chuck.

Adam Sandler Explains Why He Added Happy Gilmore's Iconic Soundtrack Back Into The Sequel
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Happy Gilmore is one of Adam Sandler's best rom-coms, and is arguably one of the most iconic titles from his long resume. The next upcoming Sandler movie is a long-awaited sequel for that title, which is arriving this week for those with a Netflix subscription. I had the chance to catch and early screening, and asked Sandman why so many of the songs from the original made their way to Happy's second movie adventure. What we know about Happy Gilmore 2 has been limited thus far, as Netflix and Sandler are hoping to guard the secrets of the follow-up. As you can see in the video above, I had the privilege of speaking with Sandler and Julie Bowen ahead of its release. I asked about the repeats in the soundtrack, and he told me: When we put them in we were editing and we would throw the right song in from the past and it would give you just a whole other feeling for the scene. We were definitely trying to show respect for the first one throughout the movie and the feelings that gave you and connect the two. I'm glad you brought that up. Whenever we could and whenever it made sense we put a song in from the first one. Honestly, this tracks (no pun intended). Music has a strange way of bringing people back to a certain time, and Adam Sandler has always brought memorable soundtracks to his movies. And fans who have re-watched Happy Gilmore over and over again will likely be struck by the way the same needle drops are used in the sequel. The Happy Gilmore 2 trailer featured one such song, namely Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Tuesday's Gone." This song opened the original movie, and it does the same for the sequel. In our conversation Sandler brought that track up specifically, saying: That Lynyrd Skynyrd song up top always breaks your heart, yeah He's not wrong. The nostalgic feels for Happy Gilmore 2 are real, as it feels like a love letter to the 1996 original. In my screening I could see other fans get excited when they heard the same songs, as well as every little easter egg and reference to the first movie. Now I'm curious to see if certain tracks end up being streamed more after the new project is released. Happy Gilmore 2 is one of the most highly anticipated titles on the 2025 Netflix release list. Adam Sandler has been finding a ton of success with his movies for the streaming service, which include Hubie Halloween and and the Murder Mystery franchise. Happy Gilmore has a legacy all its own, and the first movie has been trending on Netflix as fans prepare for the sequel. At the time of writing this story, it's currently #4 among all of Netflix's vast catalogue of movies. It certainly seems like Happy Gilmore 2 is set up for success, and we'll see how well it ultimately performs when it arrives on Netflix on July 25th as part of the 2025 movie release list. Fans Just Spotted This Late Disney Star in Adam Sandler's 'Happy Gilmore 2'
Fans Just Spotted This Late Disney Star in Adam Sandler's 'Happy Gilmore 2' originally appeared on Parade. Happy Gilmore 2 just dropped on Netflix Friday, July 25, and it's already making headlines. The long-awaited sequel to Adam Sandler's 1996 classic brings back the golf comedy chaos, complete with cameos from Travis Kelce, Eminem, Post Malone, and Bad Bunny. But one blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment is hitting fans especially hard: a cameo from the late Cameron Boyce. In one scene, a character working the check-in booth has a TV playing in the background. If you look closely, you'll catch the Disney Channel alum in the lower right corner—wearing a blue shirt and holding binoculars. Eagle-eyed fans quickly recognized the footage as a clip from Jessie, likely the episode where Boyce's character, Luke, breaks his leg and spends his time spying on the neighbors. The reactions rolled in fast. 'Happy Gilmore 2 was great. The honoring of Cameron Boyce was such a cute and awesome Easter egg. Bottom right of the screen they're watching them on TV. Adam Sandler you killed it,' one person posted on X (formerly Twitter). 'WHEN I SAW THAT I GASPED SO LOUD MY DOG LOOKED CONCERNED,' another quipped. 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 'I wasn't going to watch happy gilmore 2 but finding out about the nod to cameron boyce had made me so emotional I just might,' chimed in a third. 'It actually makes me so heartbroken to think about what an amazingly talented and kind soul the world lost when he passed,' someone else said. 'IM SOBBING I COMPLETELY MISSED THIS,' added another. The moment may be subtle, but it wasn't the first time the 58-year-old 50 First Dates actor honored Boyce. The two worked together on the Grown Ups franchise, where Boyce played Sandler's on-screen son. After Boyce died in 2019 from an epileptic seizure at just 20 years old, Sandler paid tribute to him in Hubie Halloween, with a photo and message in the credits: 'Gone way too soon and one of the kindest, coolest, funniest, and most talented kids we knew. You live on forever in our hearts and are truly missed every day.' Boyce's Descendants co-stars and collaborators continue to keep his memory alive, too. On what would've been his 26th birthday in May, Dove Cameron, Sofia Carson, and Booboo Stewart all posted tributes. 'i still feel you all the time. catch you in the next life. happy birthday. i love you,' Cameron, 29, shared alongside throwback photos and a close-up of her tattoo honoring him. 'Keep dancing in heaven, my Cam. Earth could never be the same without you,' Carson, 32, wrote. 'Our Angel. Our Sunshine. Our Cam.' Stewart, 31, posted a photo of the two drinking milkshakes on his Instagram Story, writing, 'Love you always, happy birthday @thecameronboyce.' Director Kenny Ortega also remembered him on Instagram, writing, 'You are love, light and forever with us.' Boyce was honored again in 2024's Descendants: The Rise of Red, where his character Carlos appears in a framed portrait and is referenced by name. China Anne McClain's character Uma looks at the photo and says, 'It's what Carlos would have wanted... Do it in honor of him.' That makes Happy Gilmore 2 the latest to pay tribute—and fans are taking note. While Sandler hasn't confirmed the moment, it lines up with his track record of honoring the people he's loved and worked with. And this small gesture? Box Office: ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps' Clobbers $57 Million Opening Day — Second-Biggest of the Year
'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' stretched its arms around $57 million from 4,125 theaters across Friday and preview screenings. Per Disney's numbers, that's the second-biggest opening day of the calendar year, ranking just behind 'A Minecraft Movie' ($57.11 million). The film is playing Imax and other premium large format auditoriums. It also just edges out Marvel Studios' comic book banner rival, DC Studios' 'Superman,' which began with a $56.1 million opening day just two weeks ago. It'll be a close call on whether 'Fantastic Four' can keep pacing ahead to beat the $125 million three-day opening of 'Superman.' More from Variety 'Fantastic Four' Credits Scene Confirms Franklin Richards' Role in 'Avengers: Doomsday,' but It's a Big Risk Pedro Pascal Downplays Reed Richards Becoming the New Leader of the Avengers in 'Doomsday': 'That's a Little Bit of a Mislead' Box Office: 'Fantastic Four: First Steps' Makes $24.4 Million in Previews, Beating 'Superman' for Biggest of 2025 It's the best first day kick-off for a Marvel Cinematic Universe entry since 'Deadpool & Wolverine' dominated the box office 12 months ago. And like that R-rated smash, 'Fantastic Four' is based on Marvel characters that were acquired by Disney after the studio's acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019, demonstrating some value to that $71 billion merger. Three previous big-budget 'Fantastic Four' entries were produced at Fox, from 2005 to 2015. (There was also an unreleased 1994 feature, spearheaded by Roger Corman as a means to retain film rights for German producers. It circulates among diehards.) With a story that has little connection to other Marvel Cinematic Universe entries, 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' has presented itself as a relatively fresh entry point to audiences. Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who lead the film as Marvel's first family, are all MCU newcomers. 'First Steps' also has the benefit of strong reviews and good audience sentiment (pollster Cinema Score turned in an 'A-' grade among ticketbuyers). At a production cost of $200 million, plus much more to market and distribute, the film will need to hold as one of the biggest grossers of the year to turn a profit in theaters. Marvel's two previous 2025 releases, 'Captain America: Brave New World' and 'Thunderbolts*,' launched to $88.5 million and $76 million respectively. Both ended up losing money theatrically. Disney hopes to gain some momentum with the Matt Shakman-directed 'Fantastic Four,' ahead of the studio's extensive hiatus from superhero films. Marvel is producing 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day,' the fourth Tom Holland-led entry set to release July 2026. But Sony is distributing that film. Disney will have nearly a year and a half to plan for its next MCU installment, the mega-team-up 'Avengers: Doomsday,' set for December 2026. Second place goes to Warner Bros.' 'Superman,' which added $7.1 million on Friday. It's down 57% from its daily total a week ago, now competing with a newer superhero spectacle. The cinematic universe-rebooter should fly to a $289 million domestic total after its third weekend, which will put it ahead of 'Sinners' ($278 million) to have it rank as the fourth-highest grossing North American release of the year. Universal's 'Jurassic World Rebirth' is sliding to third in its fourth weekend, adding another $3.6 million on Friday. The seventh entry in the dinosaur series is projecting $13 million for its fourth weekend, which would be another good hold at a 45% drop. Total domestic gross is expected to pass $301 million through Sunday — only the third release of 2025 to get into the triple hundreds. Fourth looks to go to 'F1.' Warner Bros.' release of Apple Studios' racing thriller added $1.8 million Friday, down just 37% from its daily total a week ago. At a production cost of $250 million, theatrical profitability is a questionable prospect at best for the Brad Pitt-led feature. But it has put up strong holds since debuting a month ago. The film looks to hit a $165 million domestic total through Sunday. Paramount's IP revival 'Smurfs' rounds out the top five, adding $1.72 million on Friday and projecting $5.6 million for its second weekend. After a low opening, that's a 49% second-weekend drop, showing some relative staying power as the only new animated offering to families. Domestic total will hit $22.9 million through the first 10 days — a disappointing result against a $58 million production budget.
