Tigers' Riley Greene has historic two-homer ninth inning in win over Angels
Riley Greene didn't want to dwell too much on becoming the first player in major league history to homer twice in the ninth inning of a game.
The Detroit Tigers' slugger hit a leadoff shot and then added a three-run drive later in the inning in a 9-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night.
"Yeah, I just found that out — pretty cool," Greene said after fueling an eight-run, seven-hit outburst in the ninth. "But the game is over. We got to show up tomorrow and try to win another baseball game."
The score was tied 1-1 when Greene, facing closer Kenley Jansen, led off the ninth with a 371-foot homer off the top of the right-field wall.
Colt Keith followed with a homer to left-center for a 2-1 lead, Jace Jung singled with one out, and Javier Baez hit a two-out, two-run shot to left for a 5-1 lead, giving Báez home runs in three straight games.
Detroit, an American League-best 21-12, wasn't through. Kerry Carpenter singled, Zach McKinstry doubled, knocking Jansen out of the game, and Carpenter scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-1.
Spencer Torkelson walked, giving Greene a shot at history, and the cleanup man seized the moment, crushing a 409-foot homer to right-center off left-hander Jake Eder for a 9-1 lead.
Greene became the first Tigers player to hit two homers in an inning since Magglio Ordonez against the Oakland Athletics on Aug. 12, 2007. The only other Tiger to homer twice in an inning was Hall-of-Famer Al Kaline, against the Kansas City A's on April 17, 1955.
"He's made an All-Star team, he's been a featured player on our team, he hits in the middle of the order, he gets all the toughest matchups, and he asks for more," Detroit manager A.J. Hinch said of Greene, who is batting .276 with an .828 OPS, seven homers and 20 RBIs on the season.
"You want guys to be rewarded when they work as hard as they do, and tonight was a huge night for him."
It was the second straight night in which the Tigers landed a few late-inning haymakers in Anaheim. Detroit scored eight runs on seven hits in the eighth and ninth innings of Thursday night's 10-4 victory over the Angels, who have lost seven straight and 15 of their last 19 games.
"There's no quit in our team," said ace Tarik Skubal, who gave up one run and four hits and struck out eight in six innings Friday night. "We grind out at-bats, we don't give away at-bats, and I think our record shows that. They grind out starters, relievers … I know I wouldn't want to face a lineup like that. Every at-bat, they're in it."

A's outfielder Denzel Clarke makes great catch to rob a home run vs. Angels
It's only June and we might have the catch of the year already after Athletics outfielder Denzel Clarke pulled off an incredible home run robbery. The Athletics are in Anaheim playing the Los Angeles Angels, and in the bottom of the first inning of Monday's contest, Nolan Schanuel took Grant Holman's splitter deep to center field. Advertisement It may just be something Clarke does as this isn't the first time he's robbed a homer. On May 30 against the Toronto Blue Jays, Clarke robbed Alejandro Kirk from a home run as he scaled the wall to catch the ball back in his home country. The catch against the Angels come three days after he had another incredible snag against the Baltimore Orioles, as he turned on the jets and hauled in the ball before hitting the wall to steal a hit away from Jorge Mateo. Ohio State lands commitment from four-star DE Khary Wilder

Khary Wilder had many other top programs pursuing him but after spending a weekend at Ohio State and talking through the plan with that exceptional coaching staff, the four-star defensive end found his new home. On Tuesday, the four-star defensive end from Gardena (Calif.) Serra committed to the Buckeyes and is not planning any other visits. 'It was just seeing how much of a priority I am for them,' Wilder said. 'Spending time with coach (Larry) Johnson and coach (Ryan) Day, coach (Matt) Patricia and all the coaches, they made me feel like a real priority and like I was really wanted there and that was the place I could call home. 'It was great meeting them. It was great sitting down and hearing their plan for me to dominate throughout my college years, how they see me fitting, my skill set and what I can work on and how I can build on my game to even before I get there and while I'm there, too. 'Coach Johnson was giving me tips and drills on what I could work on now for little things about my game that I could perfect and do better.' Wilder has always had dreams of playing in the pros and the four-star defensive end who shined at the Rivals Camp in Los Angeles and will be at the Rivals Five-Star in a couple weeks is fully aware of all the success the Buckeyes have had across the board especially along the defensive line. He wants to be the next one. 'The NFL has always been the goal, that's been my dream, so seeing coach Johnson and Ohio State's track record of producing top-level d-linemen and NFL defensive ends, just seeing that really motivates me and encourages me,' Wilder said. 'If I'm a priority for them and they want me to come and they see me fitting and playing in their system and they're putting out so many NFL guys at my position, that's one step closer to my dream.' Notre Dame, Washington and UCLA were the other frontrunners but once Wilder finished his Ohio State visit, he knew what he was going to do. 'It was really hard to say no to all of them because they all spent time building a great relationship with me, reaching out, talking to my coaches and my family and making me feel like a priority, too,' Wilder said. 'It was a decision I had to make but I feel very confident in my decision with coach Johnson and coach Day and coach Patricia and their plan for me.'

Phillies RHP Aaron Nola sidelined 2 more weeks with rib injury

PHILADELPHIA — Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola suffered another setback in his return to pitch when an MRI showed he has an injury in his right ribcage and will be shut down for two weeks. Nola had already been out since early May with a sprained right ankle that was progressing more slowly than expected. He experienced stiffness in his right side last week in Toronto and that wiped out a planned session against live batters. Nola underwent testing this week and had what the Phillies called a stress reaction in his right ribcage. Phillies manager Rob Thomson said ahead of Tuesday's game against the Chicago Cubs that Nola was unsure how the injury may have happened. Nola is 1-7 with a 6.16 ERA in nine starts. Nola, who signed a $172 million, seven-year contract ahead of the 2024 season, injured his ankle on May 8 during pregame agility drills when the Phillies played the Rays at Steinbrenner Field. Nola is 105-86 with a 3.78 ERA in 11 seasons with the Phillies. Thomson said slugger Bryce Harper was starting to feel better as he recovers from right wrist inflammation that last Friday landed him on the 10-day injured list. The two-time National League MVP and eight-time All-Star is hitting .258 with nine home runs, 34 RBIs and eight stolen bases in 57 games. He missed five games, from May 26 to June 2, with a bruised right elbow after being hit by a pitch from Atlanta's Spencer Strider.
