China hosted defense ministers from Iran and Russia for a meeting in its eastern seaside city of Qingdao on Thursday against the backdrop of conflict in the Middle East and a summit of NATO countries in Europe that agreed to boost military spending.
Beijing has long sought to present the 10-member Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) as a counterweight to Western-led power blocs and has pushed to strengthen collaboration between its member countries in politics, security, trade and science.
The Qingdao meeting of the organization's top defense officials comes as a fledgling ceasefire between Israel and Iran holds after 12 days of fighting between the arch-foes.
It is also being held the day after a summit of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) leaders in The Hague, where members agreed to ramp up their defense spending to satisfy US President Donald Trump.
Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun framed Thursday's meeting of officials in Qingdao, home to a major Chinese naval base, as a counterweight to a world in 'chaos and instability.'
'As momentous changes of the century accelerate, unilateralism and protectionism are on the rise,' Dong said as he welcomed defense chiefs from Russia, Iran, Pakistan, Belarus and elsewhere on Wednesday, according to state news agency Xinhua.
'Hegemonic, domineering and bullying acts severely undermine the international order,' he warned.
He urged his counterparts to 'take more robust actions to jointly safeguard the environment for peaceful development.'
Meeting Dong on the sidelines of the summit, Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov hailed ties between the two countries as being 'at an unprecedentedly high level.'
'Friendly relations between our countries maintain upward dynamics of development in all directions,' he said.
China has portrayed itself as a neutral party in Russia's war with Ukraine, although Western governments say its close ties have given Moscow crucial economic and diplomatic support.

Ukraine, Russia exchange another group of POWs
Ukraine and Russia exchanged a new group of captured soldiers on Thursday, the latest in a series of prisoner swaps agreed at peace talks in Istanbul earlier this month. Neither side said how many prisoners were released in the latest exchange. The two countries pledged to swap at least 1,000 soldiers each during their direct meeting in Istanbul on June 2, but no follow-up talks have been scheduled. The return of prisoners of war and the repatriation of war dead have been among the few areas of cooperation between the warring sides since Moscow invaded Ukraine in 2022. 'Today, warriors of the Armed Forces, the National Guard, and the State Border Guard Service are returning home,' Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on social media. He shared images of Ukrainian soldiers draped in blue-and-yellow national flags, smiling and tearfully embracing. 'The vast majority of the defenders released today had been held captive for more than three years,' Ukraine's Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War said. 'Many of them were captured during the defense of Mariupol,' it added. The grueling siege of Mariupol at the start of Russia's 2022 offensive is seen one of the most brutal battles of the conflict. Russia said its soldiers had been transferred to Belarus and were receiving 'psychological and medical care.' 'Another group of Russian servicemen has been returned from territory controlled by the Kyiv regime,' the defense ministry said in a statement. It posted a video showing freed Russian soldiers draped in their national flag, chanting 'Russia, Russia, Russia!'

Israeli strikes kill 2 in south Lebanon
BEIRUT: Israeli strikes in south Lebanon on Thursday killed two people, the Lebanese health ministry said, with the Israeli army saying its raids targeted Hezbollah operatives. In statements carried by the official National News Agency, Lebanon's health ministry said a man wounded 'in an Israeli enemy drone strike targeting his bulldozer' and another injured in a strike on a motorcycle both died in hospital. The Israeli military said in a statement that its forces 'eliminated... a commander in Hezbollah's Radwan Force' in the Baraasheet area, referring to the Iran-backed group's elite unit, and an operative from 'Hezbollah's observation force' in Beit Lif. Israel has kept up regular strikes on Lebanon, particularly in the south, since a November 27 ceasefire meant to end over a year of hostilities that left Hezbollah severely weakened. Under the ceasefire deal, Hezbollah was to pull its fighters back north of the Litani river, some 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the Israeli border, leaving the Lebanese army and United Nations peacekeepers as the only armed parties in the area. Israel was required to fully withdraw its troops but has kept them in five locations in south Lebanon that it deems strategic. On Tuesday, the health ministry said three people were killed in an Israeli strike on a vehicle in south Lebanon's Nabatiyeh district. The Israeli military said it killed the head of a currency exchange firm who worked with Hezbollah to transfer funds for the Iran-backed group's 'terrorist activities.'
