Crackdown Continues As 92 Sanitation Staff Penalised For Absenteeism

Nagpur: Under fire for its visibly collapsing sanitation system, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) penalised 92 more sanitation workers on Tuesday, the second day of its ongoing crackdown on absenteeism. Despite maintaining a workforce of over 7,000 sanitary workers, piles of garbage continue to line roadsides and remain unattended in several areas across the city. Blaming on-ground workers for the deteriorating civic hygiene, the NMC has launched a series of surprise inspections to identify workers skipping duty without prior information. On Tuesday morning, a team led by additional municipal commissioner Vasumana Pant conducted checks at the Chitnis Park attendance stand in Prabhag 19 (Gandhibagh zone). Pant found 82 workers absent without any sanctioned leave. In a follow-up inspection at Prabhag 36 in the Laxmi Nagar zone, 10 more workers were found absent, again without prior intimation. Terming it "gross negligence," Pant ordered a fine of ₹1,000 and a half-day salary cut for each of the 92 workers. Officials have also been directed to issue stern warnings and ensure such dereliction is not repeated. Despite having thousands of sanitation workers on its payroll, the civic body's performance in maintaining cleanliness has declined steadily. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indian Truck Driver Now Earns ₹2.9 Crore Monthly (See how) prestigetrophy Learn More Undo Nagpur's Swachh Bharat ranking has slipped in recent years, reflecting public frustration and the sanitation department's perceived apathy. Pant, who recently took charge as additional municipal commissioner, has initiated a series of ground-level inspections to reverse this trend. On Monday, 42 workers in the Laxmi Nagar zone were similarly penalised after being found absent during a surprise inspection. At Gandhibagh, Pant was accompanied by sanitation inspector Roshan Nanetkar and jamadar Ganesh Gravkar. Officials said 12 workers had submitted leave requests, but verification of approval was still pending. In Laxmi Nagar, where Pant was joined by inspector Dinkar Gajbhiye and jamadars Nisar Sheikh and Satish Malik, seven workers have reportedly applied for leave, and inquiries have been initiated to confirm whether due process was followed. Deputy municipal commissioner Rajesh Bhagat said a detailed report has been sought on both inspections. Meanwhile, residents from Mangalwari, Ashi Nagar, Satranjipura, and Lakadganj zones have demanded similar surprise checks in their areas. "It's high time the administration stops relying on paper records and sees the ground reality," said a resident from Satranjipura.

Dalit woman accuses doctor of assaulting her, hurling caste slurs in dispute over public bench in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: A dispute over sitting on a roadside bench allegedly escalated into caste-based abuse and violence in Nava Vadaj, where a 58-year-old Dalit woman has accused a woman doctor, her husband, son, and daughter-in-law of assaulting her and hurling caste slurs. Dadam Vaghela, who lives with her son Anil (30) and daughter-in-law Pooja (27) at Samarth Complex near National Handloom, filed a complaint with Vadaj police, alleging that the incident began around 7.30pm on June 14. According to her, Anil was sitting on a public bench placed on a road divider across from their flat when the doctor — who runs a clinic directly beneath their residence — told him he was not allowed to sit there. Pooja intervened, questioning the claim that the bench was restricted. Dadam said she heard the noise and rushed downstairs. She alleged that the doctor attempted to raise her hand on Pooja, prompting her daughter-in-law to call the police control room. A police van arrived and briefly dispersed the scene, after which the family returned to their flat. However, Dadam claims the matter escalated again shortly after, when she and her brother were standing nearby. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The doctor, along with her husband, son, and daughter-in-law, allegedly approached them and launched into verbal abuse laced with caste-based slurs. When Dadam's brother tried to record the exchange, the doctor's daughter-in-law allegedly snatched his phone. As Dadam tried to retrieve it, she was allegedly struck on the head by the doctor's son. All four family members reportedly assaulted her. Another bystander alerted the police, but Dadam said she was unable to lodge a complaint that night due to her medical condition. She later submitted a written complaint, naming her brother and other family members as witnesses. Vadaj police registered a complaint of relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for causing hurt, criminal intimidation, using abusive words, and abetment, along with charges of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against the doctor, her husband, and two other family members.
