Chandrakanth Bellad and his team make clean sweep in elections to Vidyavardhak Sangha
The faction led by incumbent president Chandrakanth Bellad made a clean sweep in the elections to Karnatak Vidyavardhak Sangha, the results of which were announced on Monday evening.
The elections to the 135-year-old sangha, a representative body of Kannada and Kannadigas, evoked much interest this time, as candidates with affiliation to two national parties were in the fray forming two panels.
While the faction led by incumbent president sought votes based on the work it has done, the faction led by the former MLC Mohan Limbikai accused the present body of not having done much for Kannada and Kannadigas and appealed for a vote for change.
However, when the counting of votes concluded, it was evident that the electorate, which comprised writers, artistes, politicians, religious heads, professionals and people from different walks of life, has decided in favour of the existing office-bearers.
Mr. Bellad managed to win the elections for the second time by defeating his opponent Mohan Limbikai by a margin of 550 votes.
In the previous election held after the demise of veteran journalist Patil Puttappa, Mr. Bellad won comfortably with a margin of 1,650 votes.
This time, Mr. Bellad, who is a former MLA, fetched 2,328 polls, while Mr. Limbikai polled 1,816 votes. Two other contenders Hanumakshi Gogi and Chandrashekhar Rayar got 204 and 39 votes, respectively.
In the intense battle for the post of general secretary, incumbent Shankar Halgatti secured 2,488 votes against 1,929 polled by the former general secretary Prakash Udakeri.
Incumbent executive committee member Sanjiv Kulkarni contested for the vice-president's post and won comfortably by securing 2,089 votes. His opponents Sharanappa Kotagi and D.M. Hiremath polled 1,349 and 952 votes, respectively.
In the contest for working president's post senior advocate Basavaprabhu Hosakeri defeated journalist Manoj Gouda Patil by a margin of over 1,800 votes. Shankar Kumbi (2,573 votes) defeated Marthandappa Katti (1,777 votes) to become joint secretary, while Satish Turmari was elected as treasurer.
Vishweshwari Hiremath got elected to the executive committee under woman reservation and Dhanwant Hajavgol under Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes reservation.
A total of 20 candidates were in the fray for the seven executive committee posts. Of them, all seven of the Bellad faction have won. They are Shailaja Amarashetti, Shivanand Bhavikatti, Jinadatta Hadagali, Guru Hiremath, Mahesh Horakeri, Veeramma Waddin and Shashidhar Todkar.
After the results were announced, Mr. Shankar Halgatthi told presspersons that the voters have reposed trust in the Bellad panel. The new body will work towards realising the objective of the sangha, he said.

Protest in Dharwad today by writers, linguists, activists against actor's remark
Taking strong exception to the recent remark by veteran actor Kamal Haasan on the origin of Kannada language, several writers, artistes, linguists, intellectuals and Kannada activists will stage a day-long protest in Dharwad on Monday. The protest spearheaded by Karnatak Vidyavardhakh Sangha, a century-old representative body of Kannadigas, will be staged in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Dharwad. The protest will begin at 11 a.m. Taking exception to Kamal Haasan's remark on the origin of Kannada, Karnatak Vidyavardhak Sangha held a consultative meeting on June 2 in which senior Kannada scholars, artistes and intellectuals took part. After due deliberations during the meeting, the sangha passed several resolutions. They are: Despite having stated that 'Tamil is the mother of Kannada and that Kannada originated from Tamil', actor Kamal Haasan has neither apologised to Kannadigas nor expressed regret. He has also not complied with the High Court's directive to tender an apology. The Karnatak Vidyavardhak Sangha has no opposition either towards Tamil language or Tamil-speaking people as it is known fact that languages originating from Proto-Dravidian language evolved into different languages. Despite this being the truth, Kamal Haasan has reportedly stated that he still intends to speak about Tamil supremacy. He has the right to speak about his language, but belittling or demeaning another language is strongly condemned by the sangha. 'By June 25, Kamal Haasan must withdraw his baseless statement about Kannada language, express regret and apologise to Kannadigas. If he fails to do so, the Karnatak Vidyavardhak Sangha will be compelled to launch a State-wide intense agitation,' says the resolution passed by the sangha. In pursuance of the decision taken during the consultative meeting, the sangha will stage a dharna on Monday and submit a memorandum registering its protest against the actor's remark.

BJP demands resignation of Karnataka CM, Dy CM over stampede tragedy
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 8 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA CN Ashwath Narayan has demanded the resignation of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, and state Home Minister G Parameshwara following the stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) IPL victory celebrations, which resulted in 11 deaths. MLA Narayan claimed that the tragedy happened due to the 'irresponsibility' of the Congress government. While speaking to ANI on Sunday, he said, '... People lost their lives due to the irresponsibility of the Congress government, particularly the CM, Dy CM, and state Home Minister...' Rejecting the government's Rs 25 lakh compensation to families of the deceased, Narayan added, 'Nobody wants their charity (Rs 25 lakh compensation each announced by the Karnataka government). The people demand the resignation of the CM, Dy CM, and state Home Minister.' He also urged RCB to provide 'decent compensation' to victims' families and demanded an FIR be filed against the top leaders. 'Even the RCB should come forward and at least announce a decent compensation... If justice and a system existed, the FIR should have been filed against the CM, Dy CM and the state Home Minister,' he added. Earlier in the day, Karnataka Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders staged a protest at the steps of Mahatma Gandhi's statue at Vidhana Soudha, condemning the state Congress government over the deadly stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium during RCB's IPL victory celebrations, which claimed the lives of 11 people. Karnataka Deputy Leader of Opposition and BJP MLA Arvind Bellad alleged that both leaders prioritised 'taking selfies' and 'celebrating' with the RCB players over managing the crowd. 'After this big tragedy in Karnataka, more than 30 common citizens were injured, and 11 people lost their lives. The chief minister, Siddaramaiah, and the deputy chief minister, DK Shivakumar, are two culprits... Because they wanted to take selfies and wanted to celebrate the victory with the RCB players, the whole attention of the police and the officers was on them. They were busy giving protection to the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister, whereas the crowd gathered at the Stadium was left unattended... There was no police protection. All the police officers were busy protecting the chief minister and their family... Siddaramaiah should resign,' Bellad said. Senior BJP leader CT Ravi also called to fix the responsibility. '11 people died--speaking the truth about it, is that politics? Did we go eat dosa after hearing about the deaths? Who is responsible? Did we call everyone to Vidhana Soudha and felicitate them? Does RCB represent the state or Kannadigas? The CM and Deputy CM are responsible. Your political credit war caused this...' he stated. Meanwhile, CM Siddaramaiah has ordered an increase in the compensation announced for the families of those who died in the stampede to Rs 25 lakh each. The government had earlier announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each. The top senior officials of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), Secretary A Shankar and Treasurer ES Jairam, tendered their resignations, taking 'moral responsibility' for the stampede ahead of RCB team's felicitation after winning their Indian Premier League (IPL) title by defeating Punjab Kings (PBKS) in a tight final on Tuesday. Ktk: BJP stage protest, demand resignations of CM, DyCM
Bengaluru, June 8 (UNI) The BJP On Sunday demanded the immediate resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his Deputy DK Shivakumar, holding them directly responsible for the stampede at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here that claimed eleven lives. Staging a vociferous protest in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue at the Karnataka Vidhana Soudha, BJP leaders squarely blamed the top brass of the Congress-led state government, including Home Minister G Parameshwara, accusing them of "gross negligence" and "willful disregard" for safety protocols despite warnings. Senior BJP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister CN Ashwathnarayan said, "At every level, officials opposed holding the event at the Vidhana Soudha and the KSCA stadium. Yet the government pushed ahead. Now, they are trying to pass the blame to KSCA, RCB, and police officials. But it is the Congress government that led the celebrations, issued invitations, and failed to ensure public safety. The Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, and Home Minister must be held accountable and resign immediately." Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka reiterated the BJP's long-standing demand. "Right from the first day, we have been demanding the CM's resignation. This government has utterly failed, even in managing a public event. "When all departments rejected the plan, who was the mysterious gentleman that forced it through? Those who insisted on going ahead must be punished. This is our party's firm stand," he said. Legislative Council LoP Chalavadi Narayanaswamy was categorical in his accusation. "Despite police warnings, the government went ahead with the event. Eleven lives have been lost. The Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister are directly responsible and must step down," he said. Former Minister Prabhu Bhamla Chavan echoed the charge, holding the Congress government fully liable for the tragedy. "The government, the CM, DCM, and Home Minister are answerable for this loss. The Chief Minister should have prioritised this from the start. This is not just our demand — it is the demand of six crore Kannadigas. There is widespread public outrage, and the people blame the Congress leadership," he said. The protest, which saw party workers and leaders raising slogans and holding placards, underlined BJP's call for a judicial inquiry into the stampede. The party asserted it would continue its agitation until top-level accountability is fixed and the ministers in question step down. UNI BDN SSP
