Ban on Guwahati rallies to ease traffic snarls
Guwahati: The Guwahati police commissionerate has implemented an immediate prohibition on all rallies and gatherings under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, to facilitate smooth traffic flow and reduce difficulties faced by commuters within the city.
Deputy commissioner of police (administration) Imdad Ali issued the directive, highlighting worries about severe traffic blockages and public difficulties caused by such events. The directive emphasises the importance of effective road management to ensure unobstructed movement of vehicles and pedestrians in the city.
The directive indicates that events such as rallies, walkathons and marathons have been causing congestion issues, which not only affect regular traffic but also impact emergency service response times.
According to the order, any breach will face penalties under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which addresses non-compliance with public servant orders. The directive includes a provision allowing affected parties to submit written objections requesting cancellation or adjustment of the order.
Local residents have voiced their opposition to this decision. Anindita Sarkar, from Lalganesh, said, "A total ban feels kind of extreme. While there are other reasons for the traffic situation in the city, the police should scrutinise every possibility. A simple gathering cannot be a reason."
Rajkumar Deka, another resident, said this is absolute inhumane and does not make sense, since it is putting a restriction on someone's right.

The Assam government is looking into the details of 'an old law' that will allow it to 'push back' infiltrators without having to mandatorily approach foreigners tribunals, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a programme in Nalbari, Sarma said that a constitutional bench of the Supreme Court, while hearing a case on Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, had said that there is no legal requirement for the Assam government to always approach the judiciary in order to identify foreigners. 'There exists an immigrants expel order, which is an old law. The Supreme Court has said that this law is in force and a deputy commissioner can give permission for immediate pushback under it,' he maintained. 'For whatever reason, our lawyers had not informed us and we too didn't know about it. The entire matter has come to light in the last few days. We will now discuss it further,' he added. The chief minister said pushing back illegal migrants will continue, adding that the process of identifying foreigners, which had been paused due to NRC-related matters, will now be accelerated. 'And when the identification of a foreigner happens, there will be no need to send the case to any tribunal. We will directly push them back. We have been preparing for it,' he added. Sarma said the process of pushback will continue, though no person with a case pending before the court will be sent back. His comments came even as the state witnessed protests over 'harassment' of minorities in the name of detecting illegal immigrants. Members and supporters of the All Assam Minority Students' Union (AAMSU) wore black badges and displayed placards against the purported recent pushback of Bangladeshis in the state. They carried out the protest in different parts, including Chirang and Jogighopa, after Eid namaz.

Sikri told ANI a day earlier, 'I think this announcement is controversial due to some reasons -- some political parties have opposed it, even BMP themselves wanted it earlier by December. He has taken this decision without consulting the parties. He has talked about reforms, but he is not a constitutional government, so there is no reason for such a government to do reforms' The former envoy said the neighbouring country must have early elections and that the Bangladesh Army has yet to react to the announcement. 'They must have early elections, and then the elected government will look at what reforms they want. The Army has not said anything so far about the decision. The most important thing is how the elections will be conducted, as he cannot head the caretaker govt because in his govt there are political party representatives, including representatives of Islami Andolan Bangladesh.' On June 6, the Bangladesh interim government announced that the national election would be held in the first half of April 2026. 'I am announcing to the countrymen today that the next national elections will be held sometime in the first half of April 2026. Based on this announcement, the Election Commission will provide you with a detailed roadmap for the elections in due course', said Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser to the interim government of Bangladesh, in an address to the nation through state television, BTV, on the eve of Eid-ul-Azha. Due to large gatherings at Idgah Maidan, along Trimbak Road, for mass mamaz, a significant police presence was deployed. Traffic diversions were enforced on two roads near Idgah Maidan from 7am to noon. The mass namaz commenced at 10 am. Senior police officers present extended wishes to Shahar-e-Khatib Hafiz Hissamuddin Ashrafi. The security arrangement included 300 personnel, comprising two DCPs, four ACPs, 20 PI, 80 APIs, and PSI.
