MSU hoops lands near middle of Big Ten in power rankings from Andy Katz
College basketball analyst Andy Katz is expecting a notable drop off from the Spartans next season.
Katz released updated power rankings for the Big Ten, and he has the Spartans dropping to the middle of the league next year. In his rankings of all 18 Big Ten schools, Katz has the Spartans coming in at No. 7.
Ahead of Michigan State is Purdue (No. 1), Michigan (No. 2), Oregon (No. 3), UCLA (No. 4), Illinois (No. 5) and Wisconsin (No. 6).
Michigan State won the Big Ten by three games last season and went the deepest of any team from the league in the NCAA Tournament in reaching the Elite Eight. The Spartans, however, have lost a number of key contributors from last year's squad -- including Jaden Akins and Jase Richardson.
I personally have Michigan State right around the same spot as Katz but can understand some Spartans fans considering this a slight for the defending conference champs. I wouldn't be surprised if Michigan State surprised some folks again and ended up near the top of the league as we saw this past season.
Check out the full video of Katz breaking down his rankings below:

Notre Dame transfer wide receiver Malachi Fields named to Biletnikoff Award watch list
Fighting Irish transfer wide receiver Malachi Fields has earned a spot on the preseason Biletnikoff Award watch list. Add another preseason accolade to the list for Notre Dame football players ahead of the upcoming season. Virginia transfer wide receiver Malachi Fields is one of 47 preseason watch list members for the 2025 Biletnikoff Award, which is given to college football's best receiver regardless of position. The senior arrived in South Bend via the Cavaliers, where he ranked tied for seventh in the nation among all FBS players in consecutive games with a reception (27). He has played in 36 career games, recording 129 catches for 1,849 yards and 11 touchdowns. Fields had a couple of standout performances in 2024, including career highs of 11 receptions and 148 yards at Wake Forest; scoring twice on four receptions and 65 yards at Coastal Carolina; and scoring the go-ahead touchdown in a four-catch, 63-yard performance at Boston College. Notre Dame has had one prior winner of the Biletnikoff Award: Wide receiver Golden Tate in 2009. Fighting Irish wide receivers Jeff Samardzija (2005-06) and Michael Floyd (2010-11) were also finalists for the award. New Notre Dame forward Carson Towt already making his presence felt on the hardwood
New Notre Dame big man Carson Towt has already raised expectations for the 2025-26 men's basketball team. After a tough first two seasons under head coach Micah Shrewsberry, the Fighting Irish went into the transfer portal to bring in the power forward from Northern Arizona of the Big Sky Conference to help replace the loss of Tae Davis to Oklahoma. The 6-foot-8, 235-pound Towt was a rebounding machine with the Lumberjacks and has already impressed on the court this summer in South Bend. He was the nation's leading rebounder last season at 12.4 per game, including 3.5 on the offensive glass. Towt was a late bloomer, as he excelled as a high school guard until a growth walked on at NAU and increased his size while getting comfortable in his new frame, and his numbers went from 5.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game as a freshman to 13.3 points and the nation-leading 12.4 rebounds in 2024-25 while connecting on 53.1 percent of his field goals. Towt chose Notre Dame over Baylor, Iowa, Xavier and Washington State. He has been compared to former Irish great Luke Harangody. If he can be even half as efficient as Harangody, the Irish made a shrewd move in the portal. New York Giants OC Mike Kafka: QB Jaxson Dart is 'Right on Schedule'
National Football League New York Giants OC Mike Kafka: QB Jaxson Dart is 'Right on Schedule' Published Aug. 7, 2025 10:54 a.m. ET share facebook x reddit link For the second time this century, the New York Giants are putting their future on the arm of a quarterback from Ole Miss. So far, so good for rookie Jaxson Dart in the eyes of his offensive coordinator. "I'd say Jaxson is right on schedule from what we'd expect in terms of just understanding the offense, continuing to grow and learn every day," Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka said on Wednesday, according to the Giants' team website. "Every day we're presenting him — not just him but all the quarterbacks — with different situations and some situations you've probably never seen before. Those have been good to build off of, whether it's in two-minute, whether it's a third-down situation or a certain blitz look that we're getting. "He's able to kind of grow and learn from those examples, and now as he starts banking more and more looks, more and more reps — we do a lot of this throughout the walkthrough, as well, he can kind of see — now he's starting to put the picture together a little bit better and cleaner for a rookie." Kafka also said that he's looking for the rookie quarterback to "command the huddle" and be "decisive" in the preseason; New York opens its 2025 preseason on the road against the Buffalo Bills on Saturday. ADVERTISEMENT Dart was listed as New York's No. 3 quarterback behind Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston on the unofficial depth chart released by the Giants earlier this week. The Giants traded the No. 34 and 99 picks in the 2025 NFL Draft and their 2026 third-round pick to move up to pick No. 25 and select Dart, who, like two-time Giants Super Bowl champion Eli Manning before him, came out of Ole Miss. New York traded up for Dart after already selecting Penn State linebacker and 2024 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Abdul Carter with the No. 3 pick. Last season, Dart totaled 4,279 passing yards, 29 passing touchdowns, six interceptions and a 180.7 passer rating, while completing 69.3% of his passes. Dart's passing yard total, passer rating and completion percentage all led the SEC. He also rushed for 495 yards and three touchdowns. Dart spent the last three seasons of his collegiate career at Ole Miss (2022-24), preceded by one season at USC (2021). Kafka is entering his fourth season as New York's offensive coordinator under head coach Brian Daboll. Last season, the Giants were 31st in the NFL in points (16.1 per game) and 30th in total yards (294.8 per game) per game. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
