Chandigarh: Punjab governor and Chandigarh administrator Gulab Chand Kataria participated in the state-level 'Har Ghar Tiranga' programme organised at Tagore Theatre on Thursday and gave a message of patriotism, national unity, and cultural dignity.
The programme started with a handicraft exhibition organised by the department of social justice, department of culture, and department of school education, which transformed the Tagore Theatre complex into a visual form of 'Developed India'. A glimpse of culture, handicrafts, and folk art of various states gave a concrete form to the soul of the country. Apart from this, the presentations given by the students filled the stage with the energy of patriotism.
In his address, Governor Kataria said the "Har Ghar Tiranga" campaign is not just a symbolic movement but has become a powerful campaign of patriotism, public participation, and national consciousness. He said that this tricolour is a symbol of our identity, our ideals, and our self-respect.
Recalling the great heroes of India's freedom struggle, the governor said, "India's independence is not of a single day, but it is a glorious history written in blood from the spark lit by Mangal Pandey in 1857 to complete independence in 1947."
He recalled the contribution of Madanlal Dhingra, Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Bipin Chandra Pal, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, Rajguru, Subhash Chandra Bose, Mahatma Gandhi, and Veer Savarkar and said that their sacrifices returned India's identity. In particular, he described the land of Punjab as the pioneer of the freedom struggle and recalled the pain of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
The governor also said that the tragedy of Partition taught us that unity, brotherhood, and tolerance are our greatest strengths. He described the "Har Ghar Tiranga" campaign as an effort to re-establish this national spirit.
Praising the schools of Chandigarh, the Governor said that the teachers and students here are playing a leading role not only in acquiring knowledge but also in value-building and strengthening the spirit of patriotism.

India's cultural unity propels nation forward: Margao MLA

Margao: Margao MLA Digambar Kamat on Friday said that while many nations once predicted India's fragmentation, its deep-rooted culture, steeped in ancient art, has been the very force that has kept the nation united. He said that this cultural unity continues to propel India on its path to becoming a global leader. Addressing the gathering after unfurling the Tricolour at the South Goa district headquarters to commemorate India's 79th Independence Day, Kamat said the nation's rapid progress under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has led India on a firm path to becoming the world's number one nation. He cited several internationally recognised schemes, including the Garib Kalyan Yojana, which provides free food grains to 80 crore people, which he said was the largest free ration programme of its kind globally. He also pointed to Ayushman Bharat, describing it as the world's largest govt-funded health insurance scheme, which benefits about 55 crore citizens. Rameswaram fishers fast for release of men, boats in Lanka

1 2 Rameswaram: Fishermen in Rameswaram observed a hunger strike on Friday demanding the release of their fellow mates and their boats currently held by Sri Lankan authorities. According to fishermen's associations, 64 fishermen from Tamil Nadu arrested by Sri Lankan navy over the past two months are lodged in prison. In addition, 24 more are serving prison terms ranging from six months to two years. Several mechanised boats seized during these arrests remain in the island nation's custody. The hunger strike, held at Thangachimadam Valasai Street and led by fishermen's representative S. Jesuraja, also called for securing fishing rights on Katchatheevu waters, and urged the Centre and state govt to find a permanent solution to the decades-old dispute. The protest is part of an ongoing indefinite strike by mechanised boat fishermen that began on Monday. On Wednesday, the fishermen carried out a demonstration condemning the repeated arrests during fishing trips. They warned that a rail roko agitation would be held on Aug 19 if their demands are not met. Hundreds of fishermen participated in the hunger strike, reiterating that without urgent diplomatic intervention, the arrests and seizure of boats will continue to disrupt their livelihood.
