Is Michelle Ryan returning to EastEnders after Zoe Slater's quick exit?

Metro4 hours ago
Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan) made a hasty departure in EastEnders after a week two decades in the making, claiming that she had done something 'so bad' that it warrants her disappearing for good.
The much-loved Walford icon staged her long-awaited comeback last month, appearing on screen for the first time since 2005.
Staying with Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) in a flat in London, it became apparent very quickly that Zoe wasn't in a good place, with our Stace' concerned enough to notify Alfie Moon (Shane Richie).
Alfie wasn't keen on the prospect of keeping Kat Moon (Jessie Wallace)in the dark but Zoe urged him to keep shtum.
When Kat showed up at the flat, however, Zoe was forced to hide and she subsequently made an escape, determined not to come face-to-face with her estranged mum.
Kat's suspicions were raised when Alfie announced her was taking a trip to Australia – actually flying to Barcelona to try and track her down.
In scenes that aired this week, Stacey was forced to cover for him, stating that he'd had a cancer scare and needed some time to himself. The question is: just what is 'so bad' that Zoe has to flee once more?
Is this really her exit? Has Michelle Ryan's stint come to an end so soon? Let's take a look at what we know.
If you're thinking 'please don't go Zoe, it's barely been a week', then you're not alone as I too was thinking the same thing.
However, I bring you good news, with this exit simply being a temporary one. Metro understands that Zoe will return to screens – and presumably this time in Walford – later this year in a more regular captivity.
Good things come to those who wait and let's face it, we've been waiting a long time.
One of EastEnders' most-known characters ever, Zoe frequented the Square for a five year period, appearing between 2000 and 2005.
The early noughties was a particularly strong era for the popular soap, with the Slater clan at the centre of much of the drama.

Zoe in particular featured in many iconic storylines during this period.
From assisting Chrissie Watts (Tracy-Ann Oberman) and Sam Mitchell (Kim Medcalf) in covering up the murder of Den Watts (Leslie Grantham) after her affair with the Queen Vic landlord – and her subsequent pregnancy reveal – to her relationship with Dennis Rickman (Nigel Harman), she had no shortage of legendary and soapy moments.
She is mostly remembered for the moment that Kat confirmed she's her biological mum.
The truth came to light in a showdown which prompted perhaps the most iconic dialogue exchange ever uttered in Albert Square. I am of course referring to 'You ain't my mother!', to which Kat replied: 'Yes I am!'. More Trending
There are few TV moments as iconic – and hopefully we'll get many more when Zoe returns to the Square later this year and *fingers crossed* reunites with Kat.
EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One or stream from 6am on BBC iPlayer.

I'm a freshly graduated mess – and Noah Kahan set me off

As someone whose Spotify Wrapped looks like a psychoanalyst's worst nightmare, seeing Noah Kahan at BST felt like a trip to therapy. Last night, I cried into my warm cider with 65,000 strangers while a man in Dutch braids sang about leaving home, seasonal depression, and the emotional weight of New England. The number of times I went from sobbing to crying with laughter – if singing didn't work out, he could have always taken up comedy (PSA I am glad the singing worked out). It felt like a giant group hug between friends, fathers and daughters and people who met five minutes ago in the queue. It was definitely a night to remember. British Summer Time opened with three incredibly talented artists on The Great Oak Stage: Gigi Perez, Finneas and Gracie Abrams. I was a fan of each of these artists prior to going, but hearing them all live was an out-of-body experience; as a girl currently crashing out about leaving university, nothing quite compares to screaming 'Free Now' in a sunny field with your best friend. Not forgetting to mention the roar of the crowd when Finneas brought out new bandmate Ashe to perform their iconic hit 'Til Forever Falls Apart'. The pair (now in a band titled 'The Favours') also performed a new song titled 'The Hudson' which is set to release on July 11th. After our voices were well and truly warmed up a crowd of emotionally unstable Noah Kahan fans waited in anticipation. He opened with All My Love, which had every single person jumping up and down from the first guitar chord. Shout out to school assemblies for preparing us for this moment, all 65,000 of us screaming his lyrics back to him – my ears are still ringing. The 28-year-old superstar addressed the crowd after his first song, 'My name is Noah Kahan and this is the biggest show I have ever played in my life'. The 28-year-old was born in Vermont, USA (he sings about this a lot – from what I've gathered he is not a huge fan). He loves to dutch braid his hair. Also is very familiar with a brightly coloured two piece. His hit 'Stick Season' was number one for seven consecutive weeks in the UK. His 2022 album 'Stick Season' was re-released as 'Stick Season: we will all be here forever' in 2023 The re-release featured some of music's biggest names with the likes of Gracie Abrams, Hozier, Sam Fender, Post Malone and a few other incredible artists. TW: His music will make you cry. For the eighth year, 150,000 festival goers will descend on Glasgow Green from 11-13 July to see the liked of 50 Cent, Gracie Abrams and Biffy Clyro, and you could be there! Metro has teamed up with Rockstar Energy presents TRNSMT Festival to offer four VIP tickets to one lucky winner. For a chance to win this massive music prize, simply enter your details here. You have until midnight on Sunday 6 July 2025 to enter using the form below. Entrants must be 18+. Good luck! T&Cs apply*. Promotion opens at 18:01 BST on 2 July 2025 and closes at 23:59 BST on 6 July 2025. The promotion is free to enter; however internet access is required. Entrant must visit and when prompted by the form, submit their name, email, telephone number, date of birth and postcode. Acceptance of the terms and conditions is necessary to enter the promotion. There will be one (1) winner. The winner will win four (4) VIP weekend tickets for TRNSMT Festival, running from 11th – 13th July 2025 at Glasgow Green, in Glasgow ('Prize'). Proof of age and photographic ID are required for entry for all guests (the guests of the winner must be at least 16 years old at the time of entry). The Prize, including entry and attendance at TRSNMT festival, is subject to and governed by the Promoter's full ticket terms and conditions. 1 prize available. 1 entry per person. Full T&Cs apply, see here. As the crowd continued to scream and cheer, the chords of 'Everywhere Everything' started to play – a clear fan favourite. Noah's vocals were pitch-perfect and after posting on his Instagram 'Special surprises for you tonight' everyone was on edge wondering which guests he would bring on to the stage. There were whispers in the crowds of Sam Fender, Hozier and even a potential surprise performance of 'Dial Drunk' with Post Malone. After the first chorus, Noah shouted 'Make some noise for Gracie Abrams' as the 25-year-old pop star walked out onto the stage to sing her verse. I was amongst the girls screaming at this moment as it was a crossover of the most gut-wrenching artists. After the slight disappointment of Post Malone not coming out for 'Dial Drunk', Noah climbed down the stage and ran over to the B stage – high-fiving as many hands as he could on his way there. Noah joked: 'Yes I have two stages, it's like the Eras Tour but the only era is depression'. The number of times I went from sobbing to crying with laughter – if singing didn't work out, he could have always taken up comedy (PSA I am glad the singing worked out). The crowd decided on his 2022 masterpiece, 'Strawberry Wine' which once again had us tearing up at the moving lyrics. This didn't feel like a concert, it felt like collective CPR – the way Noah has the ability to make his sold-out show feel like he is sitting with his guitar in the living room at 2am is all part of his incomparable talent. Back on the main stage, Noah began to play 'You're gonna go far' which sent post-grad me into another emotional breakdown – but it did feel like the perfect remedy. Noah went on to say, 'This is a big night, my mum is here somewhere,' which once again set off the harmonious screaming as people tried to spot the superstar's mum. He then introduced his massive hit, 'Call Your Mom' by saying: 'This one is for your mom haha.' Once again 65,000 Noah fans went wild as he brought out Gigi Perez to sing the second verse, which was nothing far from angelic – side note: Gigi needs way more attention her voice was incredible live. The Stick Season hitmaker darted off the stage as Hyde Park chanted 'Noah, Noah, Noah.' He ran back on the stage sporting a Chelsea FC shirt, where the crowd began to boo in unison causing Noah to break into laughter at the controversy he had created. His band began to play the TikTok hit, 'Northern Attitude' – fans had already noticed an extra mic stand on the stage so the guesses of who would be up there with Noah were being thrown around the crowd. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video To everyone's shock, it was not Hozier, as the light came on no other than Lewis Capaldi was standing dressed as Noah with the matching Chelsea FC top and his hair in braids – words can't describe how loud Hyde Park screamed at the moment. More Trending It was the duet no one expected but everyone there needed, especially after Capaldi's recent hiatus from music – it felt like we were witnessing history. The show closed with his iconic track, 'Stick Season', every single person in the park was dancing, hugging their friends, singing their hearts out as fireworks lit up the sky – it was all very weirdly healing. The whole night felt like a fever dream and it was a lot cheaper than therapy or going travelling to 'find myself'. Got a story? Dark TV show 'compared to Ozark' dominates Netflix charts

Last month Netflix dropped all eight episodes of a new drama that's been compared to Ozark and it's now dominating the Netflix charts. The Waterfront, which was created by Dawson's Creek and Scream writer Kevin Williamson, is currently number one on the Netflix charts and has been watched an impressive 11,600,000 times. So what's it about? Well, set against the backdrop of coastal North Carolina… [The Waterfront] centres on the fictional Buckley family and their crumbling fishing empire.' Starring 90s movie star Holt McCallany, Coyote Ugly actress Maria Bello, and Supergirl legend Mellisa Benoist, The Waterfront 'explores family dynamics and the lengths people will go to when their legacy is on the line'. The series has proven to be wildly popular and many fans were excited about The Waterfront before they'd even seen it. This is definitely giving me the same vibes as Ozark did!' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video @AlexisD6575 said of the trailer: 'I was originally interested because Melissa Benoist is in it, but the rest of the cast got me even more, and honestly it looks like the show could be really fun too!' However, now that the show's been released, it's earned a host of new fans who've taken to social media to shower the series with praise. 'I've finished watching The Waterfront,' wrote @VivQi on X. 'It was definitely intense, chaotic, fast paced and entertaining to watch!' @benoistpost added: 'We need season 2 of #TheWaterfront please @Netflix'. Meanwhile, @dariacott admitted they, 'Came for Melissa Benoist, stayed for the plot! Overall, really good show.' On Reddit, Liltwaunnysquirt wrote: 'I enjoyed the show. Reminded me of Ozarks a little bit, certainly not as good, but still thought it was solid.' 'I loved the show,' said Basic-Insect3214. 'Maybe it is because I have not watched the other shows that it is being compared to constantly, so for me as a standalone, it was a good watch.' The series has been compared to Ozark not just because they're both on Netflix, but because both shows depict an otherwise ordinary family pulled into the criminal underworld. In Ozark, the Byrde family moved to the titular region to continue laundering money for a large Mexican drug cartel, leading to several violent confrontations. The Waterfront creator Kevin Williamson told Netflix: 'We've never really seen a story about the commercial fisherman told before in any sort of dramatic way in a family drama. '[The fishing industry] is being taken away from them bit by bit. [The lead characters] will do anything to hold onto it – it represents their family. They also care about the town, and so many people depend on them.' He continued, talking about the plot, which sees the characters having to make millions of dollars very quickly: 'It's about a bunch of people who make mistakes, they do some bad things, and then they get in deeper and deeper and deeper. Have you been watching The Waterfront? 'When you have all these people doing bad things, it's always nice when they do that one good thing that can bring hope back.' Kevin also revealed that the story behind the series is, in part, a personal and autobiographical one, with his father involved in the fishing industry once upon a time. More Trending 'The fishing industry upturned in the '80s – my dad couldn't feed his family. So, someone came along and said, 'Hey, if you do this one thing, you can make all this money' and it was hard to say no to. 'My dad – a very, very good man – got tempted to do some things that weren't so legal and got in some trouble. [But] it put food on the table and it helped me go to college.' The Waterfront is available to watch on Netflix now. (This article was first published on June 19, 2025.) Got a story? My date saw nothing wrong with him and his mum's sleeping arrangement

Standing in his bedroom, staring at the two single mattresses pushed together, my date, Will*, pointed to the one on the left. 'This is where I sleep', he said. Without blinking, he moved his hand to the mattress on the right. A part of me knew what he was going to say next and I felt a panic rise in me. '…and this is where Mummy sleeps'. Alarm bells were ringing so loudly they were all I could hear. The Oedipus complex was very real. When we arrived at his house earlier that night, Will said his mum was out, but that I would most likely meet her later. I hadn't expected to meet a parent so soon – this was only our second date – and by the end of the house tour, I was thoroughly shaken. I don't know what compelled me to stay except a morbid curiosity to meet the woman who had borne such a weirdly attached son. Love reading juicy stories like this? Need some tips for how to spice things up in the bedroom? Sign up to The Hook-Up and we'll slide into your inbox every week with all the latest sex and dating stories from Metro. We can't wait for you to join us! Will was pouring himself a whiskey, when his mum abruptly entered. I immediately stood up to greet her, but she didn't exactly shake my hand back. In fact, she ignored me and instead, picked up an ironing board, bundle of clothing and began ironing – with a face like thunder. I sat back down, confused – I didn't react, I was taken aback and sat in awkward silence. 'Mummy, don't be rude to my guest!' Will slurred. She stormed off upstairs to their bedroom. It takes a lot to make me uncomfortable, but this scene was undeniably awkward. I couldn't believe what was happening. I was merely trying to go on a sweet and innocent date – how did I end up here? Earlier that month, as I was weaving through a dive venue with a pint, someone stumbled in my periphery. I turned around to apologise and was met with a twenty-something wearing an outrageously expensive suit. A little incongruous for this gig, it wasn't really the dress code. But instead of turning away, he started to engage in conversation. He was handsome, so I let it happen. He theatrically pretended to be blown away by my perfume – 'you smell incredible! What is that?!' he yelled over the music. I replied that it was Dolce & Gabbana's 'Light Blue', which I had doused myself in for a date – but I was there alone. It had been six long months of singledom and I was ready to date again. I met a friend of a friend on a night out, and organised this date with him. But, standing there on the night, I realised he wasn't going to turn up. And I must admit, I was enjoying Will's attention. He asked me about my 'situation', to which I honestly answered, 'single'. So, How Did It Go? is a weekly series that will make you cringe with second-hand embarrassment or ooze with jealousy as people share their worst and best date stories. Want to spill the beans about your own awkward encounter or love story? Contact This gave him the signal he needed and he leaned in – we shared an electric and passionate kiss and swapped numbers. I soon forgot about being stood up. After a week of messaging, we met for a date in Soho. We sat at the bar mixing all our drinks and got tipsy quickly. The conversation flowed and we laughed a lot. At that point, I thought he was a promising date and I could see myself with him. I noticed Will talked about his mum a lot, and at first, I admired his respect for her. When I brought up his dad, he brushed him off as an 'idiot father' with a grimace. He didn't want to talk about him, so I continued to listen about his saint mother. The date ended with a kiss and when I arrived home, Will had messaged: 'let's do this again soon?' I fancied him and was looking forward to lining up a second date. The following week, Will was waiting for me at the Tube station and walked us to a bustling nearby pub. We still had chemistry, laughter and good conversation – so I ignored the potential mummy issues I clocked on the first date. After last orders, Will suggested drinks and a tour of his fixer-upper home. He claimed to be able to make a mean whiskey cocktail and had all the ingredients, so I accepted the invite – the pace felt right. I knew I should have fled after the bedroom tour and I regretted not going with my gut. But the time had finally come and I politely made my excuse to head home. I was freaked out. I told a couple of close friends whose jaws hit the floor. So I was surprised when Will texted me three weeks after the second date, the day before Valentine's Day with 'I don't have time to be your boyfriend, but we could be friends with benefits?' His busy schedule was the least of my concerns. I could have ghosted but courteously declined his booty call request and never saw him again. This experience, while a great story, has taught me to be more discerning when dating. I was younger then, but now, I'm not afraid to ask questions if a guy presents an amber flag. More Trending In this case, although there's nothing wrong with having a close relationship with your mother, there's a line between healthy and unhinged.
