Things you need to know before renting an electric vehicle ― that the agent won't tell you
Questions somebody should have answered before she left the parking lot.
'Where do I charge it?' she said. 'How does it work? This car is frustrating.'
That's the sound of a rental company dropping the ball, and an automaker paying the price.
A little help, please
"U.S. rental-car companies had a unique opportunity to start transitioning their fleets to EVs, while also educating hundreds of thousands of Americans about the new cars.
"They almost uniformly blew it," said John Voelcker, a reporter and analyst who has covered electric vehicles for 15 years.
EVs are great in a lot of ways. They can also be maddening, frequently because car companies got too cute and reinvented features that already worked fine while they were also creating the technology that will probably eventually dominate the roads.
Some EVs have a start/stop button. Others power up and down automatically when the key fob enters and leaves the vehicle. Locking and unlocking them can be equally idiosyncratic.

Rental companies should be prepared to demonstrate these features, and others.
I've spent enough time in Mercedes vehicles and other EVs to answer Cindy's questions.
She made it through the rest of her trip to Michigan without getting stranded, but how many times has that happened to drivers whose only mistake was trusting the rental car company to tell them how to operate the vehicle?
It's not that hard to get it right.
Here's what you should demand from a rental agency, and a few key tips for anybody curious about EVs:

What else you need to know to be safe on the road
Charger types: There are basically two: Level 2 charging, best for topping up the battery overnight; and DC fast charging for long drives where you'll stop and charge en route. Both will probably cost less than using gasoline. Level 2 charging, which uses the same 240-volt current as many appliances, should cost a lot less.
When DC fast charging, it's most efficient to stop at 80% or 90% of a full charge. Adding the last 10%-20% ― it varies depending on brand and battery technology ― takes longer.
One-pedal driving/regenerative braking: Many EVs have this feature, which maximizes the amount of energy recaptured for the battery when the vehicle slows down. You may never touch the brake pedal at all. The features increase battery range and are clever engineering, but not everybody likes them. Drivers who don't can turn it off or select different levels of deceleration
Battery preconditioning: When the vehicle is plugged in, an app can tell it to warm the battery to its most efficient temperature before you start driving. That saves valuable battery power and increases range. Some vehicles will also precondition the battery for quicker charging before you stop at a DC fast charger on long drives. That reduces charging time and gets you get back on the road faster.
Heated seats and steering wheels are your friend: It's a more efficient use of electricity to keep occupants comfortable by touching the seats and steering wheel than heating all the air in the cabin. Preconditioning can increase driving range significantly when temperatures fall below freezing. Air conditioning doesn't use as much power as heating. Traditional forced-air AC is fine in hot weather.
Two good apps you'll need to find chargers: Plugshare and ABRP (A Better Route Planner) are my favorites. They'll tell you where to find chargers, which ones are open and if any are out of service. Charging networks like EVgo have their own apps but they only direct you to their chargers. Plugshare and ABRP are universal search engines, the Chrome and Safari of EV charging.
Choose to charge overnight: Your life will be simpler if you stay somewhere with a Level 2 charger. One of the best things about EVs is starting every day with a full battery. Another is never stopping to gas up in the rain, wind or snow.
And remember this courtesy move
Never leave your vehicle parked at the charger when the battery is full. You don't lock the bathroom door behind you as you leave, do you? Somebody needs to use it.
Are you changing your mind about renting an EV?
This may seem like a lot to think about and do, but it quickly becomes second nature.
DC fast chargers are also becoming more common, but "charging deserts" still exist. If you plan long drives in your rental, download ABRP or Plugshare before you decide an EV's the right choice for this trip.
The rental clerk turned Cindy out into the night with a key fob and a wave, probably because nobody at HQ realized what a disservice that was to a customer.
Cindy's a patient and forgiving soul, necessary character traits for someone who has put up with me for decades, you might say.
Rental companies shouldn't take advantage of her, or any other customer's good nature. They need to improve their service or stop offering EVs. Until that happens, customers should ask a few extra questions before renting one.

The forgotten African patent that predicted today's smart car safety tech
In 2007, as the world braced for the smartphone revolution and electric vehicles remained a fringe idea, a little-known African innovator quietly filed a U.S. patent that would anticipate a global standard in vehicle safety. The invention was a camera-based safety system for vehicles. It proposed recording footage before, during, and after a vehicle was in motion to deter theft, protect passengers, and offer real-time visual evidence in the event of an incident. The filing predated Tesla's Autopilot, BYD's fleet safety tools, and Uber's in-car camera systems. What makes this story remarkable isn't just the concept, but who filed it. At just 22 years old, Frederico Thoth Jorge de Miranda, a student from Angola, submitted a U.S. patent application—#US 11/710166. It was an ambitious proposal to use real-time, event-triggered cameras to build safer mobility systems. Though the application was never granted, rejected purely on procedural grounds, the application remains a public, documented signal of African ingenuity far ahead of its time. What Miranda foresaw back in 2007, the world is witnessing now. In today's automotive and mobility industry, Miranda's concept is everywhere. From driver-monitoring systems in BMWs to dashcams in ride-hailing fleets, the integration of AI and visual technology has become essential to both security and insurance processes. His patent included key elements that mirror modern standards: continuous video capture, automatic storage during events, and enhanced safety applications tied directly to vehicle activation. Yet, Miranda is not a case extenuating circumstances, his story is not an isolated occurrence of African innovation being seen too late. Across the continent, innovators frequently create meaningful ideas that are never scaled, funded, or celebrated. Limited access to capital, infrastructure, and legal networks means many African-originated inventions remain on paper. Other cases include the likes of William Kamkwamba from Malawi, who built a wind turbine from scrap as a teenager, or Samson Oghenevwakpo in Nigeria, whose hybrid engine technology never secured local investment despite international attention. Innovation Without Infrastructure What makes Miranda's concept, as well as, other African innovations unique is its origin point and infrastructure, or lack thereof. Even though his system was designed while studying in the United States, his background remained firmly rooted in Angola. His exposure to different driving risks in urban African settings helped shape and inspire the invention. This wasn't a Silicon Valley project, it was a lived solution to a real problem. The patent offered an alternative path for Angola, one rooted not in resource extraction, but in technological contribution. ' I wasn't trying to be ahead of anything,' Miranda is quoted as saying in a brief 2024 discussion. ' I saw a risk, so I designed a tool. I never expected the world to move in that direction without me. ' Today, in 2025, Africa is home to the youngest population in the world. Yet innovation ecosystems, particularly for deep tech, remain underdeveloped. This means that all too often the 'results' are dismissed only for the ideas, just as with Mirand's, to surface years later on the global-scale, disconnected from their origin. Miranda's 'Vehicle camera security system' patent application, now 18 years old, isn't just a historical anecdote. It's a wake-up call. His design is highly representative of, and aligned with what companies today are raising millions to implement. Yet, Miranda remains unknown, his work un-monetised, and his story untold. Until now that is. As more global investors and R&D firms look to diversify and localise innovation, stories like this highlight the urgency of investing in systems that identify, support, and scale African talent. This must expand beyond the traditional Africa-attributed foreign and local investments in the creative arts or fintech sectors, they must manifest in engineering, design, and hard science as well.

CNBC's Inside India newsletter: Musk's India relationship moves beyond talk — but will it blossom?
India has long been on Elon Musk's radar. But for years, the relationship mostly played out in headlines and half-starts. Remember 2024? Musk was all set to fly into New Delhi to meet Prime Minister Modi — until he canceled at the last minute and popped up in Beijing instead. Anyway, let's take a step back here. Tesla signaled serious interest in the Indian market back in 2021, only to shelve its plans when negotiations over import duties stalled. Starlink, Musk's satellite internet venture, started taking pre-orders in 2021 but had to hit pause after regulatory hurdles forced the company to issue refunds. For the better part of the last decade, Musk's India ambitions have remained just that — ambitions. That's finally starting to change. The recent weeks have been interesting for the Musk-India relationship. Tesla has opened its first showroom in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex. Starlink has received the necessary regulatory approval to launch commercial services in India. And all of this comes just weeks after Musk publicly distanced himself from U.S. President Donald Trump, marking a broader shift in his global strategy. So why the sudden momentum? At one level, India offers Musk a new runway for growth at a time when his relationships in China and the U.S. are becoming more complicated. For India's government, attracting investment from one of the world's most high-profile entrepreneurs is a win that aligns perfectly with the country's "Make in India" ambitions, particularly in clean tech and digital infrastructure. But while the headlines are eye-popping, the reality on the ground shows things are just in the early stages. Let's look at Tesla's current status in India. The idea isn't mass-market dominance, at least not yet. It's about planting a flag in the premium segment. The Model Y, Tesla's most popular car globally, has officially landed in India, priced at nearly 7 million rupees (around $79,000). To put that in perspective, India's best-selling cars typically cost a fraction of that. India isn't a one-size-fits-all market. Alongside its vast value-driven market, a growing luxury segment exists where global brands are fiercely competing for attention. BMW, Mercedes and Audi have been expanding their electric vehicle offerings in India, and Tesla has now joined the fray. The Mumbai showroom is just the first step. India's new policy framework lowers import duties for companies willing to manufacture locally. In fact, in April 2024, Tesla reportedly began scouting locations for a potential EV factory in India, with up to $3 billion in investment. That would have marked a fundamental shift, potentially opening the door to more accessible EV models, boosting supply chain activity and creating new jobs. But now, it's a slow build, not a sprint. And then there's the charging challenge. EV adoption in India differs from that in the other markets. Two- and three-wheelers dominate the electric-vehicle landscape, and most are charged at home using standard outlets. That's why India hasn't yet developed the sprawling public fast-charging infrastructure you see in China or the U.S. For Tesla's luxury buyers, though, fast-charging is non-negotiable. They expect convenience, and that means Tesla will need to invest heavily in public chargers, especially in cities such as Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru, where demand will likely concentrate. Tesla has begun hiring for these roles in India, but establishing this network will take time. Alongside the EV push, Starlink's entry into India could be be tackling an entirely different market: rural internet. Cheap mobile data has fueled India's internet boom over the past decade, but rural areas remain underserved, particularly in regions where laying fiber is expensive and logistically challenging. Starlink's solution is to beam internet directly from space, bypassing those hurdles. But: satellite internet is not cheap. Starlink's service typically costs upwards of $100 per month, which is significantly more than what most Indian consumers pay for internet. That suggests the real play here is likely government contracts and partnerships with rural schools, healthcare providers and remote businesses that need connectivity regardless of cost. Starlink is reportedly collaborating with telecom giants such as Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel to distribute its service, indicating a collaborative approach rather than a disruptive one. The timing of all this is interesting too. Musk's pivot to India comes just after his public fallout with Trump in June, following disagreements over tariffs and subsidies. Whether those two things are directly connected is debatable, but the coincidence is hard to ignore. At the very least, it's part of a broader international diversification strategy for Musk, one that moves him further from the political entanglements of his U.S. relationships. For Indian consumers, the arrival of Tesla and Starlink means new technological options, although for now, these are primarily targeted at the affluent and high-need rural segments. For investors, Musk's India play signals growing confidence in the country's long-term growth story. And as other global tech and EV giants watch from the sidelines, Musk's success could mark the beginning of a new wave of foreign investment in India. Musk has talked about India for years. The difference this time? The groundwork is being laid. The next few months will show whether this is finally the start of something lasting, or just another chapter in a complicated, stop-start relationship. The electric SUV will start at $69,770 — significantly higher than the price in America, where the same model is priced at $49,990. The discrepancy could be due to India's steep tariff on EV imports. Fuel switches at the center of Air India crash investigation. An initial report by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, released Saturday, stated that the fuel cutoff switches in the ill-fated Air India plane were flipped, depriving the engine of power, according to a Reuters markets were trading lower on Thursday. The benchmark Nifty 50 was down 0.12% while the BSE Sensex index had declined 0.16% as of 12:15 p.m. local time (2:45 a.m. ET). Tesla is also localizing its supply chains to circumvent tariffs, which should stabilize margins despite the Q1 decline to 16.3%. The earnings call will likely emphasize robotaxis and Optimus robots over raw delivery numbers, so pay close attention to these fronts. Another area that investors want clarity on is Tesla's affordable vehicle and the regulatory path for FSD. If Tesla can demonstrate FSD reliability and cost efficiencies, it could shift sentiment from cautious to confident, even in the face of near-term headwinds. A Valuation Justified by Autonomy 10.6x this year's expected sales and 173x this year's expected EPS), but its long-term potential in autonomous driving makes it a compelling bet, in my view. Tesla's camera-based FSD tech, although somewhat controversial for skipping lidar, leads the pack, with its Austin pilot, despite early traffic violations, outpacing rivals like Alphabet's (GOOGL) Waymo in cost efficiency. With plans to expand to California and beyond, Tesla's data-rich AI could unlock the potential for scalable robotaxis, potentially generating billions in revenue by 2026. This is why investors are willing to take a bet on the shares today. From a financial health perspective, Tesla is also unmatched in the space. With $23.8 billion in net cash, it dwarfs legacy automakers and can free up tons of capital to dominate AI and autonomy. Unlike GM (GM) or Ford (F), which scrapped AV plans and have substantial net debt positions of $131 billion and $115 billion, respectively, Tesla's balance sheet allows it to weather EV slowdowns while investing heavily in technology. Additionally, as TipRanks data indicates, TSLA's energy storage segment is experiencing strong growth multiples, with 9.6 GWh deployed in Q2. This adds a much-needed growth diversifier that serves as a headwind cushion. The robotaxi market's risks, as well as regulation, competition, and Musk's distractions, are real, and one could argue that for these reasons, the stock should trade at a discount. However, in my view, Tesla's tech edge and financial muscle justify its premium. If FSD delivers, Tesla could redefine mobility, much like it reshaped EVs. For patient investors, the stock's price reflects a rare shot at a transformative future, not just a car company. Is TSLA a Buy, Sell, or Hold? Currently, analysts are divided on TSLA, which clearly illustrates the stock's polarizing nature. Tesla carries a Hold consensus rating, based on 13 Buy, 13 Hold, and nine Sell ratings assigned over the past three months. Today, TSLA's average stock price target of $293.38 implies the stock is expected to decline 8.3% over the next twelve months. Tesla's Long-Term Vision Outshines Near-Term Volatility While Tesla's recent trading period has been marked by volatility, the company's long-term vision around autonomy, energy, and AI gives it an edge. Despite delivery headwinds and Musk's distractions, I believe the fundamentals, including substantial cash, tech leadership, and strategic execution, justify a Bullish stance. With robotaxis and FSD progress in focus, Tesla's current valuation appears to be a fair entry point for investors betting on the future of mobility.
