Expeditors Gears Up to Report Q1 Earnings: What's in the Cards?

Expeditors Gears Up to Report Q1 Earnings: What's in the Cards?

Globe and Mail01-05-2025

Expeditors International of Washington EXPD is scheduled to report its first-quarter 2025 results on May 6, before market open.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for EXPD's first-quarter 2025 earnings is currently pegged at $1.30 per share. The estimate has been revised 1.6% upward in the past 60 days.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for first-quarter 2025 revenues is presently pegged at $2.43 billion. In the March quarter, the transportation company is expected to report an 11.1% year-over-year increase in earnings.
The company has an encouraging earnings surprise history. Its earnings surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate in three of the preceding four quarters and missed once. The average beat is 11.6%.
Expeditors International of Washington Price and EPS Surprise
Expeditors International of Washington price-eps-surprise | Expeditors International of Washington Quote
Given this backdrop, let us examine the factors that might have influenced Expeditors' performance in the quarter to be reported.
Factors to Note Ahead of EXPD's Q1 Results
We expect the company's first-quarter performance to have been aided by high revenues. Our estimate for first-quarter Airfreight Services and ocean freight and services is pegged at $786 million and $625.3 million, respectively, which indicates an increase of 3.5% and 9.6% from the year-ago reported figure. Customs brokerage and other services are pegged at $894 million, indicating a 2% increase from first-quarter 2024 actuals.
Despite Expeditors having significant exposure to China, the silver lining is that since the first quarter covered a period (January-March) of normal business and the new tariffs took effect in the second quarter, tariff woes are unlikely to be reflected in the numbers of the March quarter.
On the contrary, we expect increasing operating expenses to have hindered EXPD's bottom-line performance in the first quarter of 2025. This rise in operating expenses is anticipated to have been primarily caused by the increase in salaries and related costs. Our estimate for total operating expenses in the to-be-reported quarter has jumped 5% year over year.
What Our Model Says About EXPD
Our proven model predicts an earnings beat for Expeditors this time. The combination of a positive Earnings ESP and a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), 2 (Buy) or 3 (Hold) increases the odds of an earnings beat, which is exactly the case here.
Expeditors has an Earnings ESP of +3.76% (the Most Accurate Estimate is currently pegged at $1.35 per share, 5 cents above the Zacks Consensus Estimate). (See the Zacks Earnings Calendar to stay ahead of market-making news.)
EXPD carries a Zacks Rank #3 at present. You can uncover the best stocks to buy or sell before they're reported with our Earnings ESP Filter.

EXPD's Q4 Highlights
Expeditors' fourth-quarter 2024 earnings of $1.68 per share beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.43. The bottom line increased 54.1% year over year, owing to strong growth in air tonnage and ocean volumes. Total revenues of $3 billion beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.62 billion and increased 29.7% year over year.
Airfreight tonnage and ocean container volume increased 11% and 14%, respectively, year over year. Operating income increased 51% year over year to $301 million. Total operating expenses increased 24% to $2.65 billion.
Q1 Performances of Some Other Transportation Companies
United Airlines ' UAL first-quarter 2025 earnings per share (excluding 25 cents from non-recurring items) of 91 cents surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 75 cents. In the year-ago quarter, the Chicago-based airline reported a loss of 15 cents per share.
Operating revenues of $13.21 billion fell marginally short of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $13.22 billion. The top line increased 5.4% year over year despite the tariff-induced slowdown in domestic air travel demand. Passenger revenues (which accounted for 89.7% of the top line) rose 4.8% to $11.9 billion. UAL flights transported 40,806 passengers in the first quarter, up 3.8% year over year.
Delta Air Lines DAL reported first-quarter 2025 earnings (excluding 9 cents from non-recurring items) of 46 cents per share, which surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 40 cents. Earnings increased 2.2% on a year-over-year basis due to low fuel costs.
Revenues in the March-end quarter were $14.04 billion, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $13.81 billion and increasing 2.1% on a year-over-year basis. Adjusted operating revenues (excluding third-party refinery sales) rose 3.3% year over year to $13 billion.

Previewing Q2 Earnings Expectations

The expectation is for Q2 earnings to increase by +5.1% from the same period last year on +3.8% higher revenues. This will be a material deceleration from the +11.9% earnings growth in Q1 on +3.6% revenue growth. In the unlikely event that actual Q2 earnings growth for the S&P 500 index turns out to be +5.1%, as currently expected, this will be the lowest earnings growth pace for the index since the +4.3% growth rate in 2023 Q3. We have been regularly flagging in recent weeks that 2025 Q2 earnings estimates have been steadily decreasing, as shown in the chart below. The magnitude of cuts to 2025 Q2 estimates since the start of the period is larger and more widespread compared to what we have become accustomed to seeing in the post-COVID period. Since the start of April, Q2 estimates have declined for 14 of the 16 Zacks sectors (Aerospace and Utilities are the only sectors whose estimates have increased), with the largest cuts to Conglomerates, Autos, Transportation, Energy, Basic Materials, and Construction sectors. Estimates for the Tech and Finance sectors, the largest earnings contributors to the S&P 500 index, accounting for more than 50% of all index earnings, have also been cut since the quarter got underway. But as we have been pointing out in recent weeks, the revisions trend for the Tech sector has notably stabilized in recent weeks, which you can see in the chart below. We see this same trend at play in annual estimates as well. The chart below shows the Tech sector's evolving earnings expectations for full-year 2025 A likely explanation for this stabilization in the revisions trend is the easing of tariff uncertainty after the more punitive version of the tariff regime was delayed. Analysts started revising their estimates lower in the immediate aftermath of the early April tariff announcements, but appear to have since concluded that those punitive tariff levels are unlikely to get levied, helping stabilize the revisions trend. The chart below shows current Q2 earnings and revenue growth expectations in the context of the preceding four quarters and the coming three quarters. The chart below shows the overall earnings picture on a calendar-year basis. In terms of S&P 500 index 'EPS', these growth rates approximate to $254.04 for 2025 and $287 for 2026. The chart below shows how these calendar year 2025 earnings growth expectations have evolved since the start of Q2. As you can see below, estimates fell sharply at the beginning of the quarter, which coincided with the tariff announcements, but have notably stabilized over the last four to six weeks. Key Earnings Reports This week The Q2 earnings season will really get going when the big banks come out with their June-quarter results in about a month. But we will have officially counted almost two dozen quarterly reports from S&P 500 members by then. All of those reports will be from companies with fiscal quarters ending in May, which we and other research organizations count as part of the June-quarter tally. We have seen such fiscal May-quarter results from four S&P 500 members, including last Wednesday's strong release from Oracle ORCL. We have another six S&P 500 members scheduled to report results this week, including Accenture ACN, Lennar LEN, and others. Oracle shares were up significantly following the beat-and-raise quarterly release, which came after two consecutive quarterly reports that market participants had found disappointing. Oracle's cloud growth appears to have finally arrived, with fiscal 2026 cloud revenues expected to grow by +40%, up from the fiscal 2025 growth rate of +24% (Oracle's fiscal year ends in May). As noted earlier, the stock has spiked on the earnings release and is now up +29.3% this year, handily outperforming the S&P 500 index (up +2.1%) and the Zacks Tech sector (up +2.5%). Shares of IT consulting firm Accenture have been under pressure lately, reflecting a challenging operating environment for its end-markets. The stock is down -11.4% this year, which compares to a +2.1% gain for the S&P 500 index and a +2.5% gain for the Zacks Tech sector. The issues in the Accenture story, in a generalized qualitative sense, pertain to the negative effects on corporate IT budgets of the ongoing tariff uncertainty and the deflationary effects of AI-driven operating efficiencies. One could argue that Accenture's scale lends its results considerable stability, particularly in comparison to other peers like India-based Infosys, TCS, and Wipro. But these macro headwinds nevertheless limit the stock's near-term upside potential. The company is scheduled to report results on June 20 th, with estimates essentially unchanged over the last two months. Lennar, the homebuilder, is scheduled to report results after the market's close on Monday, June 16 th. The homebuilder is expected to bring in $1.97 per share in earnings on $8.24 billion in revenues, representing year-over-year changes of -41.7% and -5.97%, respectively. This is a challenging environment for Lennar and other homebuilders, with demand hindered by affordability concerns and elevated mortgage rates. The stock was down after each of the last five quarterly releases and has lost roughly a fifth of its value this year (down -20.3%), which compares to the Zacks Construction sector's -1.9% decline and the S&P 500 index's +2.2% gain. Q2 Earnings Season Scorecard As noted earlier, we have already seen fiscal May-quarter results from four S&P 500 members, which we include in our Q2 tally. Total earnings for these four index members that have reported results are up +4.7% from the same period last year on +8.6% revenue gains, with 75% of the companies beating EPS estimates and all beating revenue estimates. The comparison charts below put the Q2 earnings and revenue growth rates for these index members in a historical context. The comparison charts below put the Q2 EPS and revenue beats percentages in a historical context. We are not drawing any conclusions from these results, given the small sample size at this stage. But we nevertheless wanted to put these early results in a historical context. 7 Best Stocks for the Next 30 Days Just released: Experts distill 7 elite stocks from the current list of 220 Zacks Rank #1 Strong Buys. 3 Large Cap Stocks with Growth and Value

(0:30) - Should You Be Investing Small or Large Stocks As A Value Investor (6:00) - Tracey's Top Stocks For Your Portfolio (18:45) - Episode Roundup: ADDYY, DELL, NEM Podcast@ 3 Key Takeaways Investors still love the large cap stocks. Which stocks have high Zacks Ranks and low PEG ratios right now? International companies, gold miners, and, surprisingly, a tech giant, make the list. Welcome to Episode #408 of the Value Investor Podcast. Every week, Tracey Ryniec, the editor of Zacks Value Investor portfolio, shares some of her top value investing tips and stock picks. Small cap value stocks have historically been one of the best performing asset classes over the last 80 years. But in the last 15 years, they have underperformed the large cap stocks, mostly due to the high concentration of small banks which have struggled to recover from the financial crisis. Instead of fighting the trend, why shouldn't value investors embrace it and buy large caps? Screening for Large Cap Value Stocks Tracey built a screen looking for the two top Zacks Ranks of #1s, which are Strong Buys, and #2s, which are Buys. Screening for the top Ranks should mean it will include stocks that have rising earnings estimates. To find value, Tracey used the PEG ratio which looks at the price-to-earnings ratio and divides it by growth. A PEG ratio under 1.0 usually indicates a company has both growth and value. For large caps, Tracey went larger than the usual $10 billion market cap and screened for those with at least $20 billion. This screen produced 22 stocks. 3 Large Cap Stocks with Growth and Value 1. Adidas ( ADDYY ) Adidas is a German company which makes shoes and apparel and is famous for its sneakers. In the first quarter of 2025, revenue rose 13% with the Adidas brand seeing double digit growth across all markets and channels. Shares of Adidas are down 5.5% year-to-date on tariff uncertainty. While the company re-affirmed its full year guidance in April, it also said there were a lot of tariff uncertainties. Adidas has a PEG ratio of 0.6 as earnings are expected to rise 86% this year. It's a Zacks #2 (Buy) stock. Should Adidas be on your short list? 2. Dell Technologies Inc. ( DELL ) Dell Technologies says on its website that it creates technology that drives human progress. It has a market cap of $77.6 billion. Dell is one of the survivors of the dot-com boom of the 1990s. Shares of Dell are down 4.9% year-to-date but have fallen 18.8% over the last year. It's cheap, with a forward price-to-earnings ratio of just 12. A P/E ratio under 15 usually indicates a stock has value. Earnings are expected to rise 15% this year. Dell pays a dividend, yielding 1.9%. It's a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) stock. Should Dell be on your short list? 3. Newmont Corp. ( NEM ) Newmont is a large gold miner headquartered in Colorado. It mines in the US, Canada, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Australia, Ghana, Argentina, Peru and Suriname. Newmont has a market cap of $62.2 billion. The Zacks Analyst Blog Highlights Tesla, Alphabet and Baidu

For Immediate Release Chicago, IL – June 12, 2025 – announces the list of stocks featured in the Analyst Blog. Every day the Zacks Equity Research analysts discuss the latest news and events impacting stocks and the financial markets. Stocks recently featured in the blog include: Tesla's TSLA, Alphabet GOOGL and Baidu BIDU. Here are highlights from Wednesday's Analyst Blog: Tesla's Robotaxi Launch Is Almost Here. Can It Really Deliver? Tesla 's long-awaited robotaxi service is finally nearing its launch, which is tentatively set for June 22. Yesterday, CEO Elon Musk reposted a video on X showing a driverless Tesla navigating the streets of Austin, TX, sparking fresh excitement among investors. The video featured a Model Y making turns without a human driver, hinting that Tesla's robotaxi ambitions may be finally coming to life. When asked about the launch date, Musk replied that Tesla plans to start public rides with its robotaxis on June 22. This would mark the first time Tesla offers fully self-driving rides to customers. Musk added that the first trip from the Tesla factory to a customer's house is scheduled for his birthday on June 28. However, he also cautioned that safety remains the top priority, and the timeline could still shift if needed. The initial rollout won't be massive — at least not yet. Tesla plans to start small, with about 10-20 Model Y SUVs giving rides around Austin. For now, there will still be remote human supervision to make sure everything runs smoothly. If everything goes well, Tesla would expand to other states like California, though tougher regulations there might slow things down. Tesla's been busy testing these cars on Austin's streets, using its latest Full Self-Driving software. The video Musk shared showed a Model Y, clearly labeled "Robotaxi," smoothly navigating an intersection on its own with no driver in sight. Musk has bet heavily on self-driving technology as the future of Tesla. The company sees robotaxis as a potential game-changing revenue stream, especially as competition heats up in the core EV market. If Tesla can successfully pull this off, it could be a huge breakthrough for both the company and the broader autonomous driving industry. But as always with Tesla, investors may want to keep expectations in check. Challenges around safety, regulation and the complexity of full autonomy still loom large. TSLA Still a Laggard in the Robotaxi Space While Tesla is just about to enter the robotaxi market, some competitors like Alphabet and Baidu are already far ahead. Alphabet's Waymo has built a significant lead. Waymo is currently running commercial robotaxi services in four U.S. cities. The company offers over 250,000 paid rides per week, thanks to years of testing, experience, and strong partnerships. Alphabet has also committed to investing $5 billion in Waymo over the coming years. Baidu's Apollo Go is another major player. In China, Baidu operates a fleet of over 400 robotaxis in cities like Wuhan. Baidu is now preparing to expand its Apollo Go service into Europe, starting with Switzerland by the end of 2025. The company is also planning a launch in Turkey, further widening its global footprint. Like Waymo, Baidu has years of operational experience that give it an early edge. TSLA's Price Performance, Valuation and Estimates Shares of Tesla have lost around 19% year to date compared with the industry's decline of 22%. From a valuation standpoint, TSLA trades at a forward price-to-sales ratio of 10.02, way above the industry and its own 5-year average. It carries a Value Score of F. Tesla stock currently carries a Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell). You can see the complete list of today's Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here. Why Haven't You Looked at Zacks' Top Stocks?
