Book Review: A private eye investigates whether her husband sent an innocent man to prison
Joe Green is serving time for killing his ex-wife's divorce lawyer, but he claims he didn't do it. Nick Carelli, the Chicago homicide detective who put him away, figures that's what they all say. Meanwhile, Annalisa Vega's business is short on customers. It seems people with problems that need investigating are loathe to hire a private detective who is visibly pregnant. So when Green reaches out to Annalisa for help, she reluctantly takes his case. Initially, the only thing she has to go on is an anonymous letter sent to Green that claims the eyewitness who testified against him was lying. 'Gone in the Night' is Joanna Schaffhausen's fifth novel featuring Annalisa, and fans of the series already know that the protagonist's family life is complicated. Among other things, her brother is in prison, her extended family can't quite forgive her for putting him there, and she's trying to make a go of it again with Nick after kicking him to curb for his rampant infidelity. When she suggests that Nick got the Joe Green case wrong, her life gets even more complicated. While Annalisa tries to figure out who killed the divorce lawyer, Nick investigates a series of new murders in which men are bludgeoned or stabbed and dumped into Lake Michigan. Their investigations lead both Annalisa and Nick to a women's shelter where they find the staff secretive and misleading — perhaps because they are fiercely protective of the women they serve or perhaps because they have something to hide. As the story unfolds at a torrid pace, Annalisa and Nick soon find themselves in danger. Suspense builds, and plot twists abound. While the story is certainly entertaining, the author also has a serious purpose, illustrating how difficult it can be for abused women to find either help or justice. ___ Bruce DeSilva, winner of the Mystery Writers of America's Edgar Award, is the author of the Mulligan crime novels including 'The Dread Line.' ___ AP book reviews:

Victor Martinez-Hernandez gets life without parole for murder of Maryland mother Rachel Morin
The convicted killer of Maryland mother Rachel Morin was sentenced to life in prison without parole on Monday in Harford County Circuit Court. Victor Martinez-Hernandez was found guilty in April of kidnapping, raping and murdering 37-year-old Morin, who was a mother a five. Her body was found off the Ma and Pa Trail in Bel Air on August 6, 2023. Court officials previously said Martinez-Hernandez will serve his sentence in Maryland and would not be deported back to his home country of El Salvador. Morin was reported missing on August 5, 2023, by her boyfriend and children after she went for a jog and did not return. The next day, she was found dead in a drainage culvert about 150 feet from the trail. "It shook the community. I think this crime really shook the community," Harford County State's Attorney Alison Healey said. Martinez-Hernandez was arrested in Oklahoma after a 10-month, nationwide manhunt. His trial revealed that his DNA was found on every piece of evidence that was presented by the prosecution. Prosecutors also showed photo and video evidence to prove that the murder was premeditated, including photos of Morin and searches for the Bel Air area found in Martinez-Hernandez's phone. "You don't accomplish a rape and a murder in four to six minutes unless you have a plan," Healy said during closing arguments. The defense argued there was a lack of motive, emphasizing that Martinez-Hernandez did not know and had never talked to Morin. The jury deliberated for less than one hour before it decided on the guilty verdict. "While no verdict or sentence can ever bring Rachel back," Healey said. "I am proud of the work that has been done to ensure that justice was served and that Victor Martinez-Hernandez will never again be a threat to another woman in his lifetime." During the investigation into Morin's murder, law enforcement officials discovered that Martinez-Hernandez had entered the U.S. illegally after he was accused of murder in El Salvador. He left El Salvador in February 2023 and was apprehended by Border Patrol officials three separate times for unlawfully entering the U.S., according to investigators. He was released after no criminal history was found. He was later linked to an assault on a girl and her mother in California in 2023. Martinez-Hernandez's case sparked conversations about U.S. immigration after Morin's Murder. Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler blamed immigration policies at the time, saying those policies allowed Martinez-Hernandez to enter the U.S. illegally. "It shouldn't be political, but the failure here is the immigration system that allowed this person to enter our country illegally, and remain in our country, and commit crimes in Los Angeles and here in Harford County," he said. Last week, Rachel Morin's mother, Patty Morin, marked two years since her daughter's death. "I'll never forget the words," Patty Morin told WJZ. "It's been two years, but he said, and I quote, 'Mrs. Morin, this is Det. Goldin. There's no easy way to tell you this, but we found your daughter's body.'" At the time, she said she was looking forward to Martinez-Hernandez's sentencing so that her family could move on and celebrate Rachel Morin in the way that she deserves. "These last two years have been, for lack of a better word, a journey from those moments of disbelief that something like this could happen, to questions about what happened," Morin said.

John 'Skip' Dove Jr. was found dead by police responding to a 911 call made by his tenant, who is now under arrestNEED TO KNOW John 'Skip' Dove Jr. was found with multiple stab wounds in his Soldotna, Alaska home LaShaunda Lewis has been arrested in connection with the killing Police found a video on Dove's phone where they believe Lewis can be heard whispering for help, per an affidavitA traveling psychiatric nurse in Alaska has allegedly admitted to killing her landlord who was found dead in his home last week. John 'Skip' Dove Jr., 78, was found with multiple stab wounds in his Soldotna, Alaska home on Tuesday, Aug. 5, by officers responding to a 911 call, KTUU, the Anchorage Daily News and local radio station KDLL reported, citing authorities. Police arrested 31-year-old LaShaunda Lewis in connection with Dove's killing. She was a tenant for three months at Dove's residence, per the Anchorage Daily News. According to an arrest affidavit obtained by all three outlets, police were at the residence on Aug. 4, while conducting a welfare check requested by Lewis' family. The family member requested the check after the two spoke on the phone and Lewis, the family member said, was behaving strangely during the call, the Anchorage Daily News and KDLL reported, citing the affidavit. When police arrived, Lewis reportedly told them she needed to check herself in for a psychiatric evaluation, but declined to get one, per the affidavit, KTUU and the Anchorage Daily News reported. The following day, troopers responded to a 911 call at the residence and found Lewis naked and bleeding. She was transported to a medical facility owing to self-inflicted injuries, per authorities, before police found Dove's body on the ground. He had been stabbed several times. When speaking to police, Lewis allegedly admitted to the killing and claimed she could not remember several details. She allegedly said there was a "struggle" before Dove's killing, according to investigators, KTUU and the Anchorage Daily News reported. In a video found on Dove's phone, Lewis was heard whispering "help me" and "he tried to kill me," KTUU reported, citing investigators' account. Dove, a Vietnam war veteran, is being remembered by friends and family as "charismatic" and friendly. He lost his wife in 2023, the family said. 'He has this human magnetism about him. He just can attract a crowd, they like being around him," his brother Peter Dove told KTUU. 'It's very difficult to explain. It's a gift of God.' 'He didn't know a stranger,' his friend Chuck Winters said. 'He had all the classic characteristics you need to be like an effective human, but on multiple levels, because he could relate to anyone. He could talk to anyone. Never met a stranger.'Lewis has been charged with one count of first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree murder, according to online court records reviewed by PEOPLE. Records did not indicate plea and attorney information. Read the original article on People
