Why you need to switch up your cleanser for summmer — and the 10 you should know about now
Moreover, call me hard to please, but I am also partial to those cleansers that not only deliver the goods for the complexion, but also bolster my mind by adding some sensorial elegance and joy to ones day, especially when it comes to my evening routine.
In skincare terms, the summer months tend to signal that it's time to switch up your cleansing routine, as we spend more time outdoors and are inevitably more exposed to the elements, including dust and pollution. At this time of year we are likely to apply sunscreen more often and to sweat more excessively too.
First and foremost, while you may want to reconsider rethinking your cleanser as the weather warms, so that it works harder for you, do remember that the basic cleansing theory remains the same, ensuring that you continue to double cleanse at night.
'In the summer you might want to switch from a more thick, unctuous balm such as Skin Rocks Cleansing Balm, (£55 skinrocks.com) or Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm, (£49 uk.elemis.com) to something lighter like Tatcha Camellia Cleansing oil, (£48 tatcha.co.uk)' says skincare expert and KMP Skin Clinic founder Katharine MacKenzie Paterson.
'That said, my go-to for a weeknight cleanse in hot weather - so removing make up, SPF, and 'the day'- would be Medik8 Lipid Balance Cleansing Oil (£29 medik8.com) and then a gentle foaming cleanser like Kate Somerville Goat Milk Cleanser, (£39 spacenk.com), or Epionce Purifying Wash, (£41 epionance.com), as I find that I can get oilier and be more prone to breakouts with the heat, so using a foaming cleanser feels more purifying'
Consultant dermatologist Alexis Granite agrees. 'Foaming or gel cleansers tend to be the ideal texture for summer, as they are best equipped to clear away the extra perspiration, grime and residue that is typical of warmer months, as well as makeup and sunscreen. In addition, I recommend looking out for ingredients within cleansers that can help reduce congestion, such as Benzoyl Peroxide, Glycolic and Salicylic Acid too.'
Dr Granite's personal picks? 'CeraVe's new Balancing Air Foam Cleanser, (£14.49 superdrug.com) is formulated with Glycosyline to control oil while also providing hydration, great for summer. I also like Natura Bissé Oxygen Mousse Foaming Cleanser, (£52 narurabisse.com) and Youth to the People Superfood Cleanser, (£29 spacenk.com.)'
My own skin tends to go haywire as summer arrives, but I find that CeraVe SA Smoothing Cleanser with Salicylic Acid, (£14.50 cultbeauty.co.uk ) Dermalogica Magnetic[+] Afterglow Cleanser, (£49 dermalogica.co.uk), which features positively charged Hyaluronic Acid to help retain moisture and boost glow, and Allies of Skin Molecular Silk Hydrating Cleanser, (£38 spacenk.com), manage to keep my complexion on the straight and narrow.
Finally, those feeling the urge to cleanse their skin more in the heat, should ensure that they are not overdoing it, or stripping their skin. 'Choose a cleanser well suited to your skin type, and look for options that are pH-balanced and sulfate-free,' says Dr.Granite. 'Ingredients such as ceramides, Centella Asiatica, Hyaluronic Acid, Glycerin and Allantoin can also ensure the barrier is supported, while also allowing the product to thoroughly cleanse.

This 'truly amazing' anti-aging beauty product is a ridiculous 71% off, so I put it to the test — here's my honest opinion
Amazon shoppers say it's a "staple item." When it comes to aging, the eyes tell all. I love my CeraVe eye cream and Grace and Stella's energizing eye masks are incredible, but to really target those fine lines, retinol is required. I have to be very careful which retinol products I use, as many can irritate and dry out my skin. That said, I was intrigued when I came across Amazon's viral Velamo Retiol Eye Stick — which is currently on sale for 71 per cent off, making it the lowest price I've ever seen. Quick shop: Of the more than 10,300 Amazon reviews the retinol stick has, many are saying they are in love with it, calling it a 'staple item.' The praise was enough for me to add it to my cart back in June 2024 and I've been using it steadily ever since. Do I love it? Would I recommend it for daily use? Keep scrolling to read my thoughts. The details With regular use, this easy-to-apply retinol stick will help improve the tone and texture of your eye area, reducing the appearance of puffiness, dark circles and fine lines. Formulated with powerhouse anti-aging ingredients such as retinol, vitamin E and hyaluronic acid, as well as collagen-boosting Bakuchiol, this lightweight product is moisturizing but not greasy. The vegan product is fragrance-free and designed for use on even the most sensitive of skin. After cleansing your face, gently glide the stick over your entire eye area in circular motions, starting at the outer edges of your eye. You should also apply over and around the eyelid, being careful not to tug at the skin. When you first try the product, it's recommended that you try it once every two to three days to allow your skin to adjust to the retinol. After about two weeks, you can go ahead and use it every night. According to the manufacturer, within three to four weeks you can expect to see visible results. Also, because this product contains retinol, your skin is more sensitive to the sun, so don't forget to apply sunscreen all over your face! What I like about it It's cute and compact: I love that the eye stick resembles a lipstick tube. It's easy to carry around with me at all times. It really does help fine lines: As long as I use it at least once a week, it reduces the appearance of fine lines. It's also important that between uses, you keep your skin well hydrated, as this will help prevent skin from tugging during application. Vegan and totally fragrance-free: It has no odour, for real. None. Not even the essence of a scent. I really appreciate that. A super-hydrating blend of ingredients: In addition to retinol, the formula contains moisturizing vitamin E and hyaluronic acid, which helps keep the retinol from drying out my skin. Room for improvement Can tug at the skin during application: When I first started using it, I noticed that when I applied the stick directly to my under-eye area, it tugged a bit at the skin, which I didn't like at all. To combat that, I put some on my forefinger and gently applied it that way. As I used it more regularly, my under-eye became more hydrated, and the tugging subsided, so I could also apply it directly with the stick. Everyday use? Not for me: I know it says you should use this product daily, but my skin does just fine when I use it a few times a week, especially during the summer. Even when I use it once a week, I notice an improvement in the tone and texture of my skin. There's an adjustment period: Your skin definitely needs time to adjust to the product. The first few times I used it, my skin appeared puffier and a little irritated. My son even asked me one morning if I had been crying. Your skin calms down, and the redness goes away, but there is a window during early use when you wonder if this is making your skin worse. If you have super sensitive skin, I would proceed with caution and perhaps consult your dermatologist before committing to daily use. What other shoppers are saying The "Amazon's Choice" retinol eye stick has earned thousands of five-star reviews. Many reviewers comment that they are "pleased" with their results and call it "truly amazing." One reviewer, who dubbed the eye stick a "staple item," has used it every day for over a month. They said it took a bit for their eyes to get used to the formula, and they experienced "puffiness" after applying it, but that only lasted a week. Another shopper described the eye stick as "effective" and "simple to apply." The product is "so smooth" and "light," they added. As for results, they said the stick was making a "slow difference" to their eye area. After two weeks of use, one shopper wrote that their dark circles had "drastically diminished." However, not everyone was impressed with the stick. One shopper wrote that after three months of use, they had observed "no noticeable difference" and would "not recommend it." One person was disappointed that the stick "pulled" at their under-eye skin and complained that it didn't "soak in." It's "just OK," described another. The verdict Hydrating creams and masks do much to brighten the eye area, but for rapid wrinkle repair, retinol is the way to go. This Velamo Retinol Eye Stick is my secret weapon for crow's feet. It's not perfect, and it absolutely takes some time for your skin to adjust to its potent ingredients, but with regular use, I have seen noticeable improvements. And for a whopping 71 per cent off, now's the time to add it to your cart. Just use caution when applying directly to the thin skin around your eyes. If need be, put some of the product on your forefinger to gently apply during those early applications, working up to placing the stick directly onto your face.

CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum review, tried and tested
Retinol is my favourite skincare ingredient, hands down. For a while I ummed and ahhed about whether or not I should start using it as a 25-year-old, but then I saw this post, and realised my time is now. While retinol is known as the 'gold standard' ingredient for fading discolouration, brightening, smoothing your complexion – basically just making your skin look hella good – the only caveat is that it's quite a potent ingredient, which can cause sensitivity and irritation when used incorrectly. But luckily for those with sensitive skin, innovation has come a long way, meaning there are particular formulas that offer you the benefits of retinol without causing irritation. My fave for the job? CeraVe, obvs. I used this creamy, hydrating serum for four weeks and saw results I never imagined would come from a budget formula. The biggest difference I noticed was how glowy and smooth my complexion looked. Dark spots started to fade and post-acne scarring (even the stubborn ones) lightened in colour. All for the £23 price tag? How can you argue with that when these are the results you get... TBH, I've been loyal to a particularly popular serum for some time, but I was intrigued to discover how well an affordable player for £23 would stack up. When I first started using the CeraVe Resurface Retinol Serum, I was suffering from the consequences of an outbreak of hormonal acne on my chin. I had many stubborn, large acne scars across my face and in general, my skin lacked luminosity. Not to mention the size of my pores on my nose. I started slow, as you should with any retinol, by using the serum three-four times in my routine and made sure I followed up with a hydrating moisturiser to prevent any dryness or possible irritation. CeraVe is widely loved in the industry for its fragrance-free, dermatologist-tested, and barrier-supporting formulas that all skin types agree with. But I still progressed with caution. Yes, the bottle looks a bit clinical, but as with all CeraVe products it's about what's inside and not the lack of shelf appeal – what I found inside impressed me from the get-go. It felt so lightweight and moisturising on my skin – almost enough to be a moisturiser – and it sank in within seconds. Because the formula is so silky, a few pumps was all I needed to cover my face. I then followed up with my usual PM evening routine (remember, always use retinol in the evening) and the rest of my skincare layered well on top of the serum. After a few applications and literally experiencing *zero* redness, I upped the ante and decided to use it every day, which the brand actually says is okay to do from the get-go. The serum is formulated with encapsulated retinol – an advanced way of delivering the active to your skin cells. Rather than just sitting on the surface of your skin, which is what's likely to cause irritation, the ingredient is encapsulated in a protective layer that delivers it into the deeper levels of your skin. It then slowly activates, which is a very gentle way to introduce the ingredient. And, like all CeraVe products, it contains three forms of ceramides to keep your skin hydrated and conditioned. A slow-release delivery system, named MVE technology, is also used for the ceramides to ensure the lipids reach the deeper layers of your skin. If you're new to retinol and want to begin your journey with a gentle yet effective formula, I couldn't recommend this enough. In only four weeks, I saw an improvement in how smooth and uniform my complexion looked; acne scars had faded and red blotches on my cheeks, nose and chin evened out. While some stubborn acne scars still remained, I have zero doubt that if I continued using the serum for longer, they would eventually disappear. The level-up in glow was impressive, too. At the end of my trial, my skin looked much more radiant and healthy – thanks to the retinol, which resurfaces new skin cells and gives a brighter complexion. All in all, I'd say this is an excellent serum for anyone looking to start their retinol journey. Whether you're looking to prevent acne, fade scarring or brighten your complexion, this will be £23 you won't regret spending. The before-and-after pics speak for themselves.
