DMK questions Yogi Adityanath, Pawan Kalyan's attendance at Murugan conference

India Today5 hours ago

The ruling DMK government on Thursday once again criticised the BJP over the upcoming Murugan conference in Tamil Nadu's Madurai district, alleging that the event is designed to sow divisions among people in the name of religion, race and language.Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister PK Sekar Babu questioned the relevance of political leaders from other states attending the event, particularly Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, both of whom are scheduled to visit Madurai for the conference on June 22. advertisement'What is the relationship between Andhra's Pawan Kalyan and Tamil Nadu? What is the relationship between UP's Yogi Adityanath and Tamil Nadu?' Sekar Babu asked. 'Temples are to propagate justice and discipline. But the conference by these people is aiming to create divisions based on race, language and religion. I feel such conferences are not needed. If they want to conduct one, let them,' he said.
The Minister's remarks come ahead of the Murugan Devotees Conference, scheduled for June 22, with the ruling DMK dismissing it as a politically motivated gathering and the BJP defending it as a celebration of devotion.Union Home Minister Amit Shah, speaking at a party meeting in Madurai on June 8, had called on devotees to attend the conference in large numbers to display unity. He had also accused the DMK of undermining religious sentiments, linking the controversy to the status of Thiruparankundram Hill, one of the six sacred abodes (Padai Veedu) of the deity Murugan.advertisementSekar Babu had then also dismissed the BJP-backed conference as a political stunt. 'This is a pure Sanghi and political conference. We conducted the conference where devotees of God Murugan from 27 countries participated. We did not plan to bring a crowd, seek money, arrange 2000 buses, but even then, 7 to 8 lakh people attended. But they planned this conference with the intention to use it to divide people in the name of religion,' he had said.

Row over ‘disrespect to Ambedkar portrait' on Lalu Prasad birthday: SC panel asks Bihar officials for action taken report

The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) Thursday wrote to Bihar's Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) amid the controversy over RJD chief Lalu Prasad allegedly disrespecting Dr B R Ambedkar's portrait. The letter dated June 19, signed by NCSC Joint Secretary H Kam Suanthang, said that it came to the commission's notice from reports that Lalu Prasad had insulted Dr Ambedkar's photo on June 11, during his 78th birthday celebrations. The Commission has directed the state's top officials 'to submit a report on action taken within 15 days', warning that failure to respond could result in 'summons under constitutional powers granted by Article 338'. The controversy erupted after a video from Lalu's birthday celebration went viral, showing a party supporter allegedly placing Dr Ambedkar's portrait near Lalu's feet. On June 13, the Bihar State Commission for Scheduled Castes had already issued a notice referenced to the video, asking Lalu to 'explain his side within 15 days'. The state commission said that 'failure to respond would be interpreted as intentional disrespect' and will lead to 'registration of a case under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act'. The ruling BJP and NDA allies criticised the incident, and accused Lalu of 'insulting the architect of the Constitution' and 'hurting Dalit sentiments'. Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary had called it an 'unpardonable insult'. Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, LJP (Ram Vilas) MP from Samastipur Sambhavi Choudhary, and other NDA leaders also said that the act was 'disrespecting'and 'insulting' to Dalits. BJP leaders have amplified the issue on social media and demanded a public apology from the RJD founder. Meanwhile, the RJD had dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, with party spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwari claiming the video is being 'misrepresented to polarise voters and malign Lalu's image before the polls'.

Centre continuously hindering TN development: CPM

Madurai: A 'Nadaipayanam Pracharam' (walk campaign) was taken out in Madurai by CPM cadres on Wednesday and Thursday condemning the 'anti-people' policies of the BJP-led Union govt. The party said that Tamil Nadu's development through projects and schemes were being hindered at every step. The campaign was conducted by CPM cadres at 10 places on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. In his inaugural address on Wednesday, MP Su Venkatesan charged the central govt and BJP with deliberately stalling several developmental projects, either temporarily or indefinitely. "Since Tamil Nadu is a progressive and secular state and their efforts to disrupt communal and religious harmony are not working, BJP is targeting developmental projects of Tamil Nadu, by shifting new ones or stalling existing projects. The Madurai AIIMS project, even after six years, is now only 25% complete. But, even for one brick, we fought tooth and nail," he said. The MP said several railway projects like the Madurai-Thoothukudi new line via Aruppukottai were stalled for years. "BJP is clearly rejecting Tamil culture and history through rejecting the Keeladi findings. They are also rejecting Tamil Nadu's development and neglecting its welfare. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo In Madurai alone, Rs160 crore was denied to workers by not releasing MGNREGA funds," he said. The central govt is betraying Tamil Nadu by only giving back Rs0.29 in return for paying a tax of Rs1, while states like Bihar are getting even Rs7 in return. During their walk campaign, CPM cadres highlighted various local issues, such as the need for infrastructure development in Madurai, speeding up work for establishing metro rail, need for establishing heavy industries in the region, and the establishment of National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) in Madurai.

BJP accuses Trinamool of ‘booth jam, rigging' in Kaliganj bypoll; voting continues amidst rain

In West Bengal's Kaliganj, one of the five Assembly Constituencies across the country, which went to bye-election on Thursday (June 19, 2025), allegations flew thick and fast. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate, Ashish Ghosh, alleged that polling officials deliberately marked with ink on his middle finger instead of the customary index finger. 'This was done in a pre-planned manner. Initially, they did not put ink on my finger. Then they did, after I went back for it. But before I could say anything, they put the ink on my middle finger. This was premeditated,' Mr. Ghosh alleged after he cast his vote in a booth at Debgram in Kaliganj. The bye-election to the Kaliganj seat in Nadia district was necessitated after the passing of Trinamool Congress MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed on February 2. The seat saw a three-pronged contest with Mr. Ahmed's daughter Alifa Ahmed as the Trinamool candidate, Ashish Ghosh for the BJP, and Kalbiluddin Sheikh of the Congress, who fought in alliance with the Left front, in the fray. On Thursday (June 19, 2025), the BJP accused the Trinamool of 'booth capturing' at multiple places in Kaliganj. 'The Trinamool did not allow our polling agents in two booths. I have informed the Election Commission. Booth jam and rigging are part of the Trinamool's culture,' Mr. Ghosh said. However, the Trinamool candidate, Ms. Ahmed, denied such allegations and said the opposition parties do not have 'organisational strength in Kaliganj' and should focus on 'working for the people' instead. Rain mars polling Voting continued on Thursday (June 19, 2025) amidst pouring rain in the constituency. 'I am confident that the people of Kaliganj will stand by our side… However, we are fighting not just against two political entities today but also the adverse weather conditions. It has been raining heavily since morning,' Ms. Ahmed said. While there were no reports of violence, many local people alleged that they could not arrive at their polling booths due to lack of transport, including ferry boats. As of 5 p.m., Election Commission officials pegged the turnout in Kaliganj at nearly 70%. The number is expected to increase as the voting closes. Kaliganj has 2,52,670 electors in total, according to the revised electoral list published by the Election Commission on May 5. A total of 14 companies of central forces had been deployed in the constituency for the bypoll. Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari took to social media to accuse the Trinamool Congress of displaying 'regional bias' and an 'anti-Gujarati mindset' in its letter to the Chief Election Commissioner dated June 18, 2025, regarding the selection of a Gujarat-based webcasting agency for polling in the Kaliganj constituency.
