KSE-100 Index hits new record high on budget approval

The Pakistan Stock Exchange's (PSX) benchmark KSE-100 Index closed at record high on Friday, a day after the National Assembly (NA) passed the Finance Bill, 2025. The bulls largely maintained their grip over the market, taking the KSE-100 to an intra-day high of 125,285.05. At close, the benchmark index settled at 124,379.07, up by 2,332.60 points or 1.91%. 'Bull dominated today's trading session on aggressive buying by local institutions, as the KSE-100 Index increased 1.9% to close at its ever high level,' brokerage house Topline Securities said in its post-market report. 'This buying by local institutions can be attributed to fresh liquidity on rumored new year allocations towards equity funds,' it added. Top positive contribution to the index came from FFC, LUCK, MEBL, POL, ENGROH, EFERT and OGDC, as they cumulatively contributed 1,044 points to the index, Topline said. Ali Najib from Arif Habib Limited said the PSX had a strong momentum since Friday morning, courtesy to institutional driven buying ahead of FY26 re-allocation towards equities. 'In addition, yesterday's National Assembly budget approval also taken positively by investors community,' he said. On week-on-week basis, the KSE-100 gained 3.63%. 'This gain can be attributed to ceasefire between Israel & Iran during the week bringing an end to geopolitical tensions, which triggered buying by investors before fiscal year end,' Topline said. The NA on Thursday passed the Finance Bill, 2025, with a total outlay of Rs17.57 trillion, for fiscal year 2025-26, incorporating certain amendments, with the support of its coalition partners. The bill was passed clause by clause, with all opposition-proposed amendments rejected. The PSX experienced a turbulent session on Thursday as the KSE-100 plunged amid persistent selling pressure and cautious investor sentiment. The benchmark index lost 715.18 points, closing at 122,046.46. Internationally, Asia shares hit their highest level in more than three years on Friday as they tracked a Wall Street rally, though the dollar struggled on concerns about the Federal Reserve's independence and expectations for early rate cuts. Stock indexes worldwide look set to end the week on a positive note, with worries about tensions in the Middle East and uncertainty over tariffs and trade deals on the back burner for now. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan touched its strongest level since November 2021 early in the session. It last traded 0.2% higher and is set to clock a 3% gain for the week. Japan's Nikkei jumped 1.5% and surpassed the 40,000 mark for the first time in five months. Reasons for the upbeat mood included news that Washington has reached an agreement with Beijing on how to expedite rare earth shipments to the United States. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also said on Thursday that he has asked Republicans in Congress to scrap the Section 899 retaliatory tax proposal from their tax and spending bill after Washington reached an agreement with Group of Seven industrial countries. Meanwhile, the Pakistani rupee posted marginal decline against the US dollar, depreciating 0.02% in the interbank market on Friday. Iran to hold ‘historic' funeral for slain top military, nuclear figures

TEHRAN: Iran will hold what it described as 'historic' funeral proceedings in Tehran on Saturday for 60 killed in its 12-day war with Israel, including top military commanders and nuclear scientists. The commemorations will begin at 0800 local time (0430 GMT) at Enghelab (Revolution) Square in central Tehran, followed by a funeral procession to Azadi (Freedom) Square, about 11 kilometres (7 miles) away. 'A brief ceremony will be held there, then the processions of the martyrs will go toward Azadi Square,' said Mohsen Mahmoudi, head of Tehran's Islamic Development Coordination Council, in a televised interview Friday. 'Tomorrow will be a historic day for Islamic Iran and the revolution,' he added. Among the dead is General Mohammad Bagheri, a major general in Iran's Revolutionary Guards and the second-in-command of the armed forces after supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He will be buried alongside his wife and daughter, a journalist for a local media outlet, all killed in an Israeli attack. Nuclear scientist Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi, also killed in the attacks, will be buried with his wife. Four women and four children are among those to be honoured at the funeral ceremony. The war erupted on June 13 when Israel launched strikes that it said were aimed at halting Iran from developing a nuclear weapon – a charge Tehran denies. Israeli strikes killed at least 30 top commanders of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, according to local media, including its commander-in-chief Hossein Salami and the head of its aerospace forces, Amirali Hajizadeh, who oversaw the country's ballistic missile programme. So far, there is no indication that Khamenei will attend the funeral on Saturday. Alive but weakened, Iran's Khamenei faces new challenges He has previously attended ceremonies for high-ranking Iranian authorities, including late president Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash last year. The Iranian health ministry says at least 627 civilians were killed and nearly 4,900 wounded in the Israeli attacks. Iran's strikes on Israel also killed 28 people, according to Israeli authorities.

Strong ties with US don't mean blind support for unjust policies, says Ishaq Dar

FM Ishaq Dar in meeting to review ongoing evacuation of Pakistani nationals/zaireen presently stranded in Iran & Iraq on June 18. Photo: Strong ties with the United States will not mean unconditional support for its policies, especially when they are unjust, said Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Friday. Briefing the press in Islamabad, the deputy PM emphasised that Pakistan was aware that Iran would not remain passive after the US bombed three of its nuclear facilities. Dar was speaking in reference to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) meeting, where the 12-day Iran-Israel war was a primary topic of discussion. He highlighted Pakistan's efforts to ensure that a special session on Iran was held, which was agreed upon by the foreign ministers of OIC member states. Dar also noted that Pakistan had been in constant communication with Iranian officials, including discussions between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the Iranian leadership. During the briefing, Dar explained that Iran had praised Pakistan's diplomatic efforts in both the United Nations Security Council and their parliament. He shared details of an important meeting in Istanbul, which took place during a visit by Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, which was attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu and other Turkish leaders to address the situation in Iran. Dar said that after the US attack on Iran, Pakistan had been informed by Tehran that while Iran was not developing nuclear weapons, it could not ignore the US attack and would retaliate. Iran's response entailed an attack on a US airbase in Qatar. Dar made it clear that while Pakistan values its relationship with the US, this does not mean aligning with Washington on every issue, especially when it comes to unjust military actions. He reiterated Pakistan's commitment to a peaceful resolution and its efforts to ensure the ceasefire holds.
