Historic town hall in Mysuru deteriorates due to neglect

Time of India13 hours ago
MYSURU: The historic Town Hall, officially known as the Sri Rangacharlu Memorial Hall, is fast deteriorating, with visible cracks and structural damage threatening its survival.
Built over 90 years ago in memory of C. Rangacharlu, the celebrated Dewan of the erstwhile Mysuru State, the single-storey structure stands prominently near Mysuru Palace, yet suffers from years of neglect.
Commissioned by the then
Maharaja of Mysuru
to honour Rangacharlu's leadership in steering the state out of crisis, the hall was once a proud cultural landmark. Its stage area, now partially supported by canopies, was notably used by many celebrities, including
Mahatma Gandhi
, to address a public gathering. Despite being under the care of the Mysuru City Corporation, restoration efforts were minimal. In 2014, then women and child welfare minister
Umashree
, during a review of Dasara cultural events, expressed strong displeasure over the hall's condition and directed officials to create permanent facilities, but no substantial action followed.
The surroundings of the Town Hall are also in a horrible condition, and it seems corporation authorities are not concerned with taking up cleaning work. The place has become a site for all sorts of illegal activities.
'It's disheartening to see the Town Hall in such a pathetic state,' said Prof. N.S. Rangaraju, retired Professor of Ancient History and Archaeology at the University of Mysore. 'We informed the Corporation Commissioner, who assured early repairs, but nothing was done.
Such neglect of a major heritage building in the heart of the city is truly unfortunate.'
Repeated appeals from heritage enthusiasts have gone unanswered, leaving the future of the Town Hall uncertain. Preservationists urge urgent restoration to safeguard this cultural landmark before its condition worsens beyond repair.
Speaking to TOI, Mysuru City Corporation Commissioner Shaikh Tanveer Asif said, 'The tender process is underway, and the work will be taken up at the earliest. I too felt very bad about the situation, but the repair involves a significant cost.'

Monkey holds tricolour near Puri temple on I-Day

1 2 Puri: A rare and heart-warming spectacle unfolded in Puri on Independence Day on Friday when a monkey was spotted clutching a tricolour near the Jagannath Temple Around 9 am, the monkey grabbed a national flag and sat with it for nearly half an hour near the Maa Sholapua Temple, located close to the Singha Dwara of the 12th-century shrine. The sight quickly drew a crowd, with onlookers capturing photos and videos on their mobile phones, which later went viral on social media. Many remarked that the moment symbolised that even an animal could show love for the nation. As thousands of schoolchildren marched during rallies and parades in front of the temple, the monkey remained calm, still holding the tricolour. "Children were thrilled to see the monkey and cheered with excitement," said Biswanath Sahoo, a khaja seller near the temple. He said monkeys are usually criticised for biting devotees or causing chaos on the temple premises but this one conveyed a message of peace and patriotism. Temple servitor Santosh Mahasuara said, "Monkeys are traditionally regarded as devotees of Lord Ram. Lord Jagannath is believed to be an incarnation of Ram. In that sense, monkeys are devotees of the Lord. On Independence Day, the monkey displayed not only its devotion but also a rare sense of patriotism." The remarkable moment ended when a foreign visitor offered a banana, prompting the monkey to climb down. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). 2,000-year-old Kallanai finds new stamp of glory

Thanjavur: The postal department introduced a permanent pictorial cancellation stamp on the historic Kallanai (Grand Anicut) in Thanjavur on Independence Day, celebrating the ancient dam's glory and legacy. The postmark was released on Friday at Thogur Sub-Post Office by T Nirmala Devi, postmaster general of the Central Zone. She said the stamp would help take the story of Kallanai to the world through mail and reflect pride in the department's role in preserving the region's cultural and historical heritage. Built by Karikala Cholan in the 2nd century AD, Kallanai continues to play a vital role in irrigation and is hailed as the foundation for making the delta region the "Rice Bowl of South India." The event was attended by K Thangamani, senior superintendent of post offices, Thanjavur division, along with officials, staff, philatelists, and members of the public.
