USC's Alijah Arenas Out 6-to-8 Months Due to Knee Surgery
The McDonald's All-American and five-star recruit is the son of former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas. The younger Arenas is a 6-foot-6 shooting guard from Chatsworth High School (Los Angeles) and was expected to be a big contributor for the Trojans this season.
"Alijah is a tremendous worker, teammate, competitor, and person," USC coach Eric Musselman said. "He is understandably disappointed that he will not be able to take the court to start the season, but his health is our No. 1 priority. We have no doubt that he will come back even stronger. We look forward to supporting him during this process."
Arenas, 18, was involved in a single-car accident in April after he crashed his Tesla Cybertruck into a tree in the Reseda section of Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley. He spent six days in the hospital following the accident and was in an induced coma but did not suffer major injuries.
In a news conference in June, Arenas said his Cybertruck's keypad and steering wheel wouldn't respond. Arenas said he awoke to find the passenger side of the dashboard engulfed in flames and tried to use his digital key to escape, only to find the Tesla app had locked him out.
"I tried to open the door and the door wasn't opening," he said.

Position: Linebacker Years played at USC: 2015-2018 Career highlights: As a true freshman in 2015, Smith burst onto the scene with a three-interception game against Utah, one of which he returned for a pick six. Funnily enough, however, those would be the only three interceptions Smith would record in his entire USC career. Despite this, he still had an exceptional tenure in Cardinal and Gold, finishing his time with the Trojans with 353 total tackles, 11 passes defended, and 3.5 sacks. Smith earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors in 2017 and second-team honors in both 2016 and 2018. In both his junior and seniors seasons, he was named a team captain. After USC: The Minnesota Vikings selected Smith in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. As a rookie, he appeared in five regular season games, recording eight total tackles. During the summer of 2020, however, it was announced that Smith would need to undergo open heart surgery, causing him to miss the entire season. He medically retired from football the following year.

Chicago Bulls, coach Billy Donovan agree to contract extension, per report
Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan has agreed to a contract extension with the franchise, ESPN reported Sunday, July 27. Donovan, who has been the Bulls' coach since 2020-21, is 195-205 in his five seasons with Chicago and is entering his 11th season as NBA coach, spending his first five seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Bulls were 39-43 last season and finished in ninth place in the Eastern Conference. They lost to the Miami Heat in the play-in game. Chicago has been to the playoffs once under Donovan – a first-round loss to Milwaukee after going 46-36 in 2021-22. Donovan won two NCAA men's basketball national titles at Florida in 2006 and 2007 and played in a Final Four in 2014. He took the Oklahoma City job in 2015 and has been in the NBA since. Why did Billy Donovan get a contract extension? The Bulls like stability, and Donovan provides that with his coaching and relationships with players, front office and ownership. Donovan enjoys coaching in the NBA and living in Chicago. The two sides have been working on extension for months, and at the trade deadline in February, Donovan told reporters, "I want to be part of building something." The New York Knicks requested permission to speak with Donovan about their previously open head coaching position but were denied. Which direction are the Bulls headed? As the Eastern Conference improves with teams such as the Detroit Pistons and Orlando Magic moving toward deep playoff runs alongside Cleveland, New York, Indiana, Milwaukee and Boston, the Bulls seem stuck in neutral. They were 39-43 in 2023-24 and 40-42 in 2022-23. They have tried to make playoff runs with DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine, Nik Vucevic, Alex Caruso and Lonzo Ball. Injuries, especially Ball missing two seasons, derailed Chicago's plans, and only Vucevic remains on the roster. Chicago has young talent it is trying to develop, including Matas Buzelis, the No. 11 pick in the 2024 draft, and Noa Essengue, the No. 12 pick in the 2025 draft. They are also working to bring back restricted free agent Josh Giddey on a long-term deal.
